BJP leaders in Karnataka demanded an unconditional apology from Kamal Hassan after the actor made controversial remarks linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil.
South superstar Kamal Hassan sparked a major controversy by linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil, triggering backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. BJP leaders in Karnataka have demanded an apology.
While addressing the crowd during a promotion event at the Thug Life audio launch in Chennai, Hassan began his speech with the phrase 'Uyire Urave Tamizhe," meaning 'my life and my family is Tamil language."
'You are my family that is residing in Karnataka, and hence, you came all the way here. When I started the speech, I said that my life and my family are Tamil. Your language was born out of Tamil, and hence you are part of it," said Hassan, referring to Kannada actor Shivarajakumar.
'Uncultured Behaviour, Arrogant'
The comments did not sit well with pro-Kannada groups, who said Hassan's remarks were an insult to the Kannada language and culture and threatened the actor with dire consequences.
Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra accused Hassan of 'uncultured behaviour" and 'arrogance", demanding an unconditional apology.
'One should love one's mother tongue, but showing disrespect in its name is uncultured behaviour. Especially artists should have a culture of respecting every language. It is the height of arrogance and arrogance that an actor @ikamalhaasan who has acted in many Indian languages, including Kannada, has insulted Kannada by including actor Shivarajkumar in the glorification of his Tamil language," he said on X.
Vijayendra said Hassan had forgotten the generosity of Kannada people and revealed his ungrateful personality by hurting the sentiments of 6.5 crore Kannadigas. 'Kamal Haasan is not a historian to define which language gave birth to which language," he added.
BJP leader Basanagouda R Patil said Hassan had 'lost his sense of humour" by making a 'rash" statement about Kannada. 'It is not appropriate to make such a statement for the sake of propaganda. Kamal Haasan, who himself has acted in many Kannada films, should immediately retract his statement and apologise unconditionally," he said.

'All Are Ancient Languages'
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagenthiran downplayed the controversy, stating that all languages originate from ancient India.
'If we start researching this, it will be like the age-old question of whether the chicken came from the egg or the egg from the chicken," he told reporters, adding that there will always be differences of opinion when it comes to languages.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad said Kannada and Tamil are ancient languages and part of India's foundation, and the debate surrounding Hassan's remarks was not suitable for the current atmosphere, even though he called the comment 'unfortunate".

Dip in infiltration from B'desh in last six months: Saha

1 2 3 Agartala: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha on Tuesday claimed there is a slight decrease in illegal immigration from Bangladesh during the past six months due to enhanced border monitoring and targeted operations in vulnerable areas previously used by illegal Bangladeshi nationals as transit points to other Indian states. During a media briefing celebrating the 11th year of Narendra Modi's govt, he dismissed claims of increased infiltration from Bangladesh, crediting the improved situation to effective security measures. Saha highlighted concerns about certain sections of the India-Bangladesh border where fencing infrastructure is inadequate or non-existent. He confirmed that these issues have been brought to the attention of the Union home ministry and security agencies. The chief minister acknowledged increased arrests of illegal immigrants during recent operations. This statement gains importance considering BJP's alliance partner TIPRA Motha's call for comprehensive action to identify and remove undocumented Bangladeshi nationals from Tripura. TIPRA Motha has initiated grassroots efforts in rural areas, directing supporters to document illegal Bangladeshi residents who obtained fraudulent Indian papers through local authorities. The party advocates for establishing detention facilities for illegal immigrants, similar to those in Assam. Discussing Modi govt's achievements, Saha said Tripura received substantial central funding during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He emphasised how the PM's initiatives and direct benefit transfer system enhanced governance transparency by eliminating intermediaries. He reported that Tripura farmers received Rs 843 crore through PM-KISAN, Rs 10 crore via PM Fasal Bima Yojana, and Rs 2,272 crore in low-interest loans through Kisan Credit Card scheme. Under Har Ghar Jal Yojana, household tap water access increased from 3% to 86%. Regarding healthcare and welfare, Ayushman Bharat settled claims worth Rs 239 crore, leading Tripura to develop its own health programme. Additionally, 8,200 small businesses received unsecured loans, while 1.46 lakh new mothers received Rs 62 crore through PM Matru Vandana Yojana. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana facilitated rooftop solar panel installation in 368 households.

Chennai Book Park sees a steady stream of crowd on Day 1

Status: cleared Chennai: Those entering the Central Metro station now have one-stop access to books from prominent publishers, spanning from Higginbothams to Katha, at the Chennai Book Park, opened by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday. An initiative of the School Education Department to kindle a reading habit among the public, the book park saw a steady stream of visitors on the first day. Nestled between a pharmacy and an eatery, en route to the ticket counter, one would rarely miss the park. Decked up with flowers and carpets, over 4,300 titles from over 13 publishers were on display. Among these, 84 titles were released on Tuesday. Most of the stalls belonged to the Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTESC), which manages the functioning of the park. Nakkheeran, Shanti, and Coral were among the prominent publishers who set up stalls. Schoolbooks, guides, and books for competitive exams, mostly Tamil, were available. The cost of books ranged from ₹50 to ₹3,500. The CMRL is yet to fix signage for the park at entries and exits. TNTESC superintendent G Balaji said the park will be open from 9 am to 9 pm. "The schedule on weekend timings will be finalised in a couple of days. At least three staff, including security personnel, will man the premises," he said. Chezhian Kumarasamy, Executive Director of an advertising firm, said it was good to see people at a book park in a digital age where mobile phones call the shots. "I wish more such parks would be opened in places such as airports and MRTS stations," he said. Some, like law student L Lakshmi, who walked in thinking there would be a lot of autobiographies and non-fiction Tamil books, said she was surprised to find English books on self-help. Publication managers, however, aren't too optimistic about sales. "I don't know how many people will walk in. They are in a hurry to board trains," said Sivakumar, manager of one of the publications. By 8:50 pm, the facility registered a sale of about ₹35,000. The stalls have tied up with the TNTESC on a revenue-sharing model, said Katha Books CEO Ravin Carr. "Between 25% and 40% of the sale cost (depending on the size of the stalls) will be shared with the govt," he said. At the event, the Chief Minister also inaugurated 110 library buildings built across all districts at a cost of ₹29.80 crore and 70 special libraries at bus stands, hospitals, and district collectorates.
