5 best bars in Asia
Adjudged the
best bar in Asia
2025,
Bar Leone
, Hong Kong, might seem like a run-of-the-mill transplant of a Roman aperitivo hangout, but to brand it as such would be a disservice. Armed with a simple aim to serve up "cocktails for the people," speed, simplicity and consistency are central to the Leone operation, with drinks such as the Filthy Martini – created with smoked olive brine – and the now-emblematic mortadella focaccia.
Live Events
In 2024, Bar Leone made 50 Best Bars history as the first-ever establishment to debut on the list in the No.1 position. In 2025, it holds onto its title as both The Best Bar in Hong Kong and The Best Bar in Asia, sponsored by Perrier.
The second spot was occupied by
Zest
, Seoul, which is also adjudged as the best bar in Korea. Led by a quadruple of Korean bar heavyweights, Zest's compact cocktail list majors on myriad local ingredients in cocktails like Jeju Garibaldi, crafted with speciality regional oranges and Gujwa village carrots.
Jigger & Pony
from Singapore was ranked third in the list of Asia's best bars and it was also adjudged to be The Best Bar in Singapore 2025. From humble origins on Amoy Street to its now sumptuous digs at the Amara Hotel, Jigger & Pony has been a staple of the Asian bar scene, having featured in the top 10 of the last seven rankings of Asia's 50 Best Bars.
In fact, the top three of Asia's 50 Best Bars remained unchanged. It was a momentous night for Bar Leone, the Italian-vibed spot that shook up the drinks world in 2024 when it debuted at the top of the list — barely over a year after opening. In the process, it dethroned Hong Kong's Coa, which held the coveted distinction for three consecutive years.
Bar Us
and new entrant
Dry Wave Cocktail Studio
, both from Bangkok, took the fourth and fifth ranks, respectively.
Bar Us won the award for The Best Bar in Thailand 2025. With an almost all-black interior, theatrical spotlights and a team dressed in clinical white lab coats, visitors would be forgiven for thinking they'd entered an experimental laboratory rather than a bar. Bar Us looks to fine dining as inspiration for its drinks programme, with the menu split into starters, mains, afters and an all-night portion featuring twists on classics.
Though Hong Kong brought home the highest honours, Bangkok made a strong showing with seven spots in the top 50, including the debut of Dry Wave Cocktail Studio at No. 5, right behind neighbouring Bar Us, which jumped up from No. 21 last year.
Best bars in Asia from India
There was also notable representation from India: New Delhi's Lair, also a new entry, came in at eighth place as the country's best bar, and was joined on the list by Soka (28), Boilermaker (30), ZLB23 (31) and Bar Spirit Forward (37).
No.8 Lair
, located in the heart of New Delhi, is a modern speakeasy inspired by secretive 1920s prohibition-era bars, where moonshine and craftsmanship reigned supreme. The bar offers a perfect environment for relaxed conversations and immersive drinking experiences, with dim lighting and earthy décor that heighten the sensory experience.
Soka
from Bengaluru is dedicated to delivering stories of its home city in liquid form. The bijou space is designed to feel like an intimate izakaya – perfectly crafted to hide away in for a few hours as you taste cocktails inspired by the surrounding locale. Take The Mofo Don, for instance – a spicy tequila concoction with a pink hue from red cabbage and a cilantro-sprinkled rim and a playful homage to the bar's cabbage vendor.
Boilermaker
, which ranked 30 in Asia's best 50 bars list, is brainchild of craft beer entrepreneur Nakul Bhonsle and renowned mixologist Pankaj Balachandran, the dynamic duo created Boilermaker to answer criticism that Goa's bar scene had started to lose its soul. Beyond a stellar lineup of beer, expect cocktails shaken with local flavours and a food menu of reimagined Goan bar bites.
Following Soka immediately is the 31st ranked
ZLB23
, again from Bengaluru. ZLB23 is an exclusive underground den with boisterous live jazz, red velvet in surplus and a remarkable drinks programme that injects classics with Japanese influences.
Another new entry and from Bengaluru,
Bar Spirit Forward
took the 37th rank in the list of Asia's best bars. Bar Spirit Forward is built for cocktail enthusiasts who appreciate craft, clarity and context in their drinks. Sink into a plush leather chair and soak in the warm, lounge-like vibe as you browse an inventive cocktail menu replete with thoughtful ingredients.
A Carroll-like climb
Separately, Seoul's Alice snagged the highest climber award, making the greatest rise from last year's ranking at 46th place to 13th. Locating this hidden cocktail den inspired by the Lewis Carroll literary classic is just the first step of the adventure. Those who succeed are rewarded with a bar that serves up suitably imaginative and seasonally varied creations inspired by Carroll's timeless masterpiece. Jumping 33 places from its 2024 ranking, Alice takes home the Nikka Highest Climber Award 2025.

Days after listing TRF as terror outfit, US praises Pakistan's role in 'counter terrorism'
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed gratitude for 'Pakistan's partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability' as he hosted Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar read more US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday (July 25) in Washington, lauding the latter for Islamabad's alleged role in 'counter terrorism operations'. The two leaders Friday gathered for 'comprehensive discussions aimed at bolstering US-Pakistan relations, enhancing trade ties, and addressing regional security challenges,' according to their statements to the press. In a post on X, Rubio expressed gratitude for 'Pakistan's partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability' and highlighted the focus of their talks on 'expanding bilateral trade and fostering deeper cooperation in the critical minerals and mining sectors.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister @MIshaqDar50 today to discuss expanding bilateral trade and enhancing collaboration in the critical minerals sector. I also thanked him for Pakistan's partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional… — Secretary Marco Rubio (@SecRubio) July 25, 2025 US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that Rubio commended 'Pakistan's continued willingness to play a constructive role in mediating conversations with Iran and its commitment to preserving regional stability.' The leaders also explored preparations for the upcoming US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue, scheduled for August in Islamabad, with a focus on strengthening joint efforts against terrorist groups like ISIS-K to enhance regional security. Rubio underscored the need for 'expanding mutually beneficial bilateral trade' and exploring opportunities for collaboration in the minerals sector, which is increasingly vital due to global demand for critical resources. According to Arab News, Dar's eight-day US visit includes chairing several United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meetings, as Pakistan holds the rotating presidency this month. TRF's designation as terror outfit The meeting follows Rubio's recent announcement that the US will designate The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as both a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The TRF had claimed responsibility for the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 deaths.

Trump tariffs leave costly China supply question unanswered
President Donald Trump 's recent flurry of trade deals have given Asian exporters some clarity on tariffs, but missing are key details on how to avoid punitive rates that target China's supply chains. Trump unveiled tariffs of 20% for Vietnam and 19% for Indonesia and the Philippines, signaling those are the levels the US will likely settle on for most of Southeast Asia, a region that ships $352 billion worth of goods annually to the US. Southeast Asian nations are highly reliant on Chinese components and raw materials, and US firms that source from the region would bear the extra tariff damage. That's left companies, investors and economists facing several unanswered questions about Trump's tariffs that appear aimed at squeezing out Chinese content, according to Deborah Elms, head of trade policy at the Hinrich Foundation in Singapore. Live Events 'Is that raw materials? All raw materials? Above a certain percentage?' she said. 'How about parts? What about labor or services? What about investment?' In an agreement with Indonesia last week, the White House said the two countries would negotiate 'rules of origin' to ensure a third country wouldn't benefit. The deal with Vietnam earlier this month outlined a higher 40% tariff rate for transshipped goods. And Thai officials, who have yet to secure a deal, detailed that they likely need to boost local content in exports to the US. Missing Details The Trump administration isn't providing much clarity on the matter right now. US officials are still working out details with trading partners and looking at value-based local content requirements, to ensure exports are more than just assembled imported parts, according to a person familiar with the matter, who didn't want to be identified discussing private talks. A senior Trump administration official also said this week that details on the approach to transshipment are expected to be released before Aug. 1, the deadline for when higher US tariffs kick in. Some factories are already adjusting their supply chains to comply with rules that will require more locally-made components in production. Frank Deng, an executive at a Shanghai-based furniture exporter with operations in Vietnam — and which gets about 80% of business from the US — said in an interview his firm is making adjustments as authorities appear to be more strictly enforcing country-of-origin rules. Vietnam has always had specific local content requirements for manufacturers, Deng added, including that a maximum of 30% of the volume of raw materials originates from China, and the value after production in Vietnam must be 40% higher than the imported raw materials. 'We've been struggling to meet all the standards so that we can still stay in the game,' Deng said. 'But I guess that's the only way to survive now.' For most of Southeast Asia, reducing the amount of Chinese-made components in manufacturing will require a complete overhaul of their supply chains. Estimates from Eurasia Group show that Chinese components make up about 60% to 70% of exports from Southeast Asia — primarily industrial inputs that go into manufacturing assembly. About 15% of the region's exports now head to the US, up about four percentage points from 2018. Local Content The US has become increasingly vigilant about China's ability to bypass US trade tariffs and other restrictions through third countries since Trump's first trade war in 2017. Thailand signaled its frustration over the lack of clarity for how much local content is needed in goods exported to the US to avert transshipment rates, but noted it will likely be much higher than a traditional measure of 40%. 'From what we've heard, the required percentage could be significantly higher, perhaps 60%, 70%, or even 80%,' Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said July 14. 'Emerging countries or new production bases are clearly at a disadvantage,' he said, as their manufacturing capabilities are still at an early stage and must rely on other countries for raw goods. Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia have all taken steps this year to address Trump's concerns, increasing scrutiny of trade that passes through their ports including new rule-of-origin policies that centralize processing and imposing harsh penalties on transshippers. Developing nations may still struggle to enforce Trump's rules or comply with the rules if it means going up against China, their largest trading partner and geopolitical partner. 'The reality is it's not enforceable at all,' said Dan Wang, China director at Eurasia Group. 'Chinese companies have all kinds of ways to get around it and those other countries have no incentive to enforce those measures, or capacity to collect the data and determine local content.'

Coldplay star's ex Gwyneth Paltrow becomes Astronomer's "spokesperson": Social media explodes
Astronomer, the AI/data ops startup that went viral for all the wrong reasons, has just dropped a bold PR move: Gwyneth Paltrow , ex-wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin , is playing the role of their temporary spokesperson. It's thought‑provoking, cheeky—and yes, it's totally capitalizing on the buzz. What happened (in case you missed it) It all started at a Coldplay concert on July 15. A Kiss Cam captured Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR head Kristin Cabot in a cozy moment. They quickly shied away, looking mortified. Chris Martin quipped on stage, 'Either they're having an affair or just really shy.' The internet explosion that followed led to resignations—and a full-on PR crisis. About a week later, Astronomer posted a video featuring Gwyneth Paltrow. She introduces herself calmly, saying: 'I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer.' She deadpans, 'Yes... Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow,' turning the viral moment into a data‑tech pitch. It's like watching the calmest damage control ever. Netizens are calling it a PR masterstroke—'marketing jiu‑jitsu' that turned a viral scandal into brand awareness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo One user said this was '10/10 PR recovery.' Social media lit up Social media lit up after news broke that Gwyneth Paltrow—yes, Chris Martin's ex—was hired as a temporary spokesperson by Astronomer, the data platform making headlines for all the wrong reasons. 'Astronomer picking Chris Martin's ex-wife as their spokesperson is diabolical marketing and a pretty entertaining crisis recovery move,' tweeted @mickeynegus, summing up the internet's collective jaw-drop. Meanwhile, @LloydMathias chimed in with a perfectly Goop-flavored take: 'Brilliant come back from @astronomerio using Gwyneth Paltrow as temp spokie. She cleverly cuts off Q&As: 'OMG what the actual f—' & 'How is your social media team holding—" to expertly shift focus back to brand. Masterful crisis recovery! Well played.' Who is Astronomer's CEO now? Astronomer's interim CEO, Pete DeJoy, has stepped in after Byron's resignation. He described the media attention as 'unusual and surreal,' adding that the scandal unexpectedly made Astronomer a household name in data automation. Paltrow's casting is ironic gold: she was married to Coldplay's Chris Martin. Now she's tongue-in-cheek fronting the company that got dragged into the drama. It's absurd—and hilarious. Astronomer turned a cringe kiss cam moment into a viral comeback—by starring Gwyneth Paltrow in the kind of eyebrow‑raising cameo we'd never see in traditional crisis PR.
