Pop Mart shares fall after Labubu-maker posts near-400% profit surge
Shares in Chinese toymaker Pop Mart fell Wednesday, a day after the company posted a near-400% surge in net profit, driven by booming global demand for its Labubu dolls. Pop Mart's revenue jumped 204.4% year on year to 13.88 billion yuan ($1.93 billion), and its net profit attributable to shareholders soared 396.5% to 4.57 billion yuan for the first six months of 2025, compared with last month's forecast of at least 200% revenue growth and 350% rise in profit. Pop Mart dropped as much as 4.7% before paring losses to 0.85% as of 10.15 a.m. local time (10:15 p.m. ET Tuesday) The Beijing-headquartered company's Labubu plushies — sharp-toothed, big-eared ugly-cute dolls have taken the world by a storm, with its $30 keychains spotted on the bags of Rihanna and K-pop band Blackpink's Lisa. The company markets its toys in "blind boxes," where buyers discover the character only after opening the mystery box. In June, Chinese state media urged stricter oversight of blind-box toys and trading cards sold to children under the age of eight, suggesting measures such as age verification at checkout and parental consent for online purchases. While not directly naming Pop Mart, state media criticized businesses for encouraging kids to spend excessively on "mystery boxes" and "blind cards." "We think the longevity of popularity for Pop Mart's key IPs remain uncertain. While sales growth of Labubu and other IPs remain robust, there is no guarantee that consumers will continue to favor them in the next 5-10 years, as their preferences may change very fast," said Jeff Zhang, equity analyst at Morningstar. Pop Mart's stock has rallied more than 200% since the start of the year, data from LSEG showed. "Shares likely remain overpriced as investors are overlooking the high business risk in the long run, in our view," Zhang added. Asia-Pacific, excluding China, was the company's largest overseas market, with revenue soaring 257.8% to 2.85 billion yuan compared to the same period a year ago. The Americas made up its second-largest overseas market, with revenue jumping over 1,000% to 2.26 billion yuan. Intellectual Property is at the "core" of Pop Mart's business, the toymaker said in its earnings statement, adding that it will seek to continue expanding its global business footprint.

Why This Crypto Cycle Is Teaching Investors Hard Lessons About Altcoins — And Bitcoin's Staying Power
Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. The cryptocurrency market has evolved dramatically since the euphoric 2020-2021 bull run, and the latest YouTube analysis from Into The Cryptoverse founder Benjamin Cowen reveals why this cycle is fundamentally reshaping how investors should think about digital assets. Unlike the previous cycle where 'everyone felt like a genius' and nearly every altcoin participated in massive rallies, today's market is delivering harsh lessons about sustainable investing practices. The difference comes down to one critical metric that most investors overlook. Don't Miss: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — — no wallets, just price speculation and free paper trading to practice different strategies. The Advanced Decline Index Tells the Real Story Cowen focuses heavily on the Advanced Decline Index for the top 100 cryptocurrencies, a metric that calculates daily advances minus daily declines. During 2020-2021, this indicator trended consistently upward, meaning broad participation across the cryptocurrency ecosystem drove total market cap growth. Today's cycle paints a starkly different picture. The ADI has been declining since 2021, creating a series of lower highs despite the overall crypto market cap increasing. This means only a handful of assets are responsible for the market's gains while hundreds of altcoins continue bleeding value. 'A lot of cryptocurrencies just continue to bleed back to Bitcoin for many years and now also Ethereum,' Cowen explains, highlighting how liquidity rotates briefly through different altcoin sectors before ultimately flowing back to the market leaders. Trending: 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. Blue-Chip Dominance Defines This Era The current cycle is characterized by what Cowen calls 'blue-chip dominance' — primarily Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin broke its all-time highs long ago and has maintained strength, while Ethereum, though still technically below previous peaks, has shown renewed momentum recently. This concentration of gains challenges the prevailing narrative from 2020-2021, when lower interest rates and massive money printing created an environment where riskier altcoins outperformed consistently. The macroeconomic backdrop today is 'almost completely opposite,' according to Cowen's analysis. The Altcoin Rotation Game While certain altcoins have enjoyed their moments in the spotlight — Solana in 2023-2024, XRP's late 2024 surge, and Ethereum's recent strength — these outperformance periods prove fleeting. The pattern shows liquidity rotating from 'this altcoin to that altcoin,' but rarely establishing durable outperformance against Bitcoin. 'Sometimes it's not about chasing the next 100x gem,' Cowen notes. 'It's about preserving what you have' — specifically, preserving Bitcoin holdings rather than constantly chasing speculative Lessons for the Long Term This cycle is teaching 'good investing practices' by demonstrating that speculation often leads to 'bleeding Satoshis' — losing value against Bitcoin over time. The 2020-2021 environment encouraged investors to buy 'the riskier stuff thinking it's going to outperform Bitcoin,' but current conditions reveal the unsustainability of that approach. Even when altcoins briefly outperform in future cycles, Cowen warns that 'the most likely outcome after that brief window is over is to just continue to see them bleed.' This occurs because over longer timeframes, the Advanced Decline Index generally trends downward, and only a select few altcoins maintain relevance across multiple market cycles. The Preservation Strategy For investors navigating today's market, the key insight involves shifting from a growth-at-any-cost mentality to a preservation-focused approach. Rather than constantly searching for the next moonshot, successful crypto investing may require accepting Bitcoin's role as the foundational asset and understanding that sustainable wealth building often means resisting the urge to chase speculative altcoin pumps. This doesn't mean altcoins lack opportunity, but it suggests that timing, discipline, and realistic expectations about mean reversion become crucial for long-term success in an increasingly mature cryptocurrency market.
