Wallabies add Valetini, Skelton muscle for second Lions test

Straits Times24-07-2025
MELBOURNE - Australia coach Joe Schmidt has added a considerable heft to his pack with the inclusion of Rob Valetini and Will Skelton in his starting line-up for Saturday's second test against the British & Irish Lions.
The Wallabies were outmuscled by the tourists at the collision in the first hour of last week's loss in the series opener in Brisbane and the return of flanker Valetini and lock Skelton from calf injuries should help in that area.
Schmidt is hoping their influence will go beyond just adding a bit more more physicality to the pack.
"We've got a group of players who haven't won too much in recent times ... and I think building confidence is an incremental thing," the New Zealander told a news conference on Thursday.
"Bobby probably brings confidence to other players because of his experience and his ability to take the ball forward.
"I think one of the key things with Will is he's a very calm influence. Yes, he's a big man ... but his experience of being involved in successful teams, particularly with La Rochelle in Europe, I think just gives other players confidence."
Hooker Dave Porecki, who missed the first-test defeat because of a concussion sustained in Australia's warm-up match against Fiji, has also been recalled in place of Matt Faessler.

Schmidt resisted further changes to his starting side and 22-year-old Tom Lynagh will lead an unchanged backline from flyhalf at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in his second test start.
Flanker Nick Champion de Crespigny and Faessler have been dropped to allow the return of Valetini and Porecki, while lock Jeremy Williams remains in the matchday squad among the replacements after making way for Skelton.
Schmidt has opted for a 6-2 split in favour of the forwards on the bench with the powerful Langi Gleeson also returning from injury to join flanker Carlo Tizzano as back-up for the loose forwards.
"It's not forward heavy, it's replacements for guys who are coming back from injury," explained Schmidt.
"We know that we've got Will Skelton, Bobby Valetini and Langi Gleeson all coming back from injury, so we're just trying to cover that as best we can."
Schmidt said he has never been an "outcomes" focused coach but conceded his relatively inexperienced Wallabies team beating the Lions on Saturday to level up the series would rank high among his career achievements.
"I've been lucky to have been on the periphery of some fantastic outcomes over the last 20 years of of coaching professionally, but this would be special inevitably," he said.
"And it'd be special for this group, and I think it would accelerate a little bit of their growth as well."
The third and final test takes place at Sydney's Stadium Australia on Aug. 2.

Ex-Arsenal player Thomas Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON – Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Aug 5 after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged on July 4, four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. The midfielder stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. The footballer showed no reaction as the charges were read out and was not asked to enter any pleas. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said Partey 'denies all the charges against him', adding he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. Under his bail conditions he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. Reports in recent days have linked Partey with a move to La Liga club Villarreal. As bail conditions were discussed in court, chief magistrate Paul Goldspring said: 'I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.' Partey is due to appear at London's Old Bailey court on Sept 2. A spokesperson for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said the group was 'profoundly disappointed' in the London club over their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: 'We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in, week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. 'We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue.' Barber said the group wanted the club to publish their sexual violence policies, 'suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences' and 'properly support the survivors'. British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million (S$77 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana. An Arsenal spokesman previously said: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.' AFP

Michelle Wilson: British Mom of Three Sexually Assaulted by Parasailing Operator While on Vacation in Tunisia

Updated August 5, 2025 14:14 +08 A British mother of three was sexually assaulted while parasailing in mid-air during a trip to Africa, according to a report. Michelle Wilson, 52, claimed she was harnessed alongside a parasailing operator when he pressed his body against hers and inappropriately touched her as they glided through the air above the beach in Sousse, Tunisia. "I could feel the back of my bikini bottoms being pulled, and he was pulling the strap," Wilson told The Sun. "He must have been tightening the harness to get me closer. His legs straddled around me, he had one hand up on the parachute, the other wasn't. Then I felt him touch my leg." Sexually Abused in Mid-Air Michelle Wilson X "He was groping me and moving back and forth into me and talking to me in Arabic," Wilson said. "I felt him pressing against me. I kept arching my back. I felt violated and dirty and was scared. He was only a young lad, maybe around 20." Wilson initially planned to go parasailing with a friend, but staff told them that the windy conditions meant they would have to ride separately, each accompanied by an operator. According to Wilson, her friend "had a wonderful experience without any issues." However, Wilson said she broke down in tears immediately after landing and went straight to the local police to report what had happened. She added that the experience completely ruined her holiday. "As women you expect a bit of banter from men in these countries, but this wasn't banter, it was a sexual assault," she said. Incident Under Investigation Michelle Wilson said initially planned to go parasailing with a friend, but staff told them that the windy conditions meant they would have to ride separately, each accompanied by an operator. X Wilson said that she is not going to stop and will wait till the end to see if the suspect gets punished. Wilson said she believes the man has now been taken into custody. She added that British officials and her insurance provider are helping with the case. Wilson paid $8,000 for the vacation to Tunisia, which she took with her 17-year-old daughter, a friend, and her 16-year-old twin boys. EasyJet, the airline through which Wilson arranged her trip, is also investigating the alleged sexual assault of the British mom.
