Lack of awareness and limited facilities affect soil testing in delta region
Despite repeated government campaigns, a combination of limited testing infrastructure and low farmer awareness continues to affect soil health and crop productivity across this crucial agricultural belt.
'There's no other way to assess nutrient levels except by testing,' said A. Anuratha, Associate Professor of Soil Science at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Kilvelur. 'Just like we go for regular health check-ups, the soil must be tested seasonally. In Nagapattinam, for instance, salinity is steadily increasing. Overuse or incorrect use of fertilisers only degrades soil further and affects yield,' she explained. K. Coumaravel, Associate Professor of Soil Science in PAJENCOA & RI, noted that 'at the global level, indicators show consistent deterioration in soil health due to climate change and unscientific farm practices. Knowing the micronutrient profile can help correct deficiencies that limit crop potential.'
Although both the Union government's Soil Health Card (SHC) programme and Tamil Nadu's Tamil Mann Valam portal aim to promote testing, field-level implementation remains inadequate. Official targets for SHC distribution are set annually, but large sections of the farming population remain outside its coverage as getting an SHC has not been made mandatory. According to government data, just 7,900 cards were generated in Nagapattinam and 7,350 in Mayiladuthurai for 2024-25—numbers that fall far short of total cultivators who have not got SHC's.
Experts point out that while the Tamil Mann Valam portal, includes soil data for each village, most of it is not precise. The last State-wide mass soil sampling was conducted in 2018–19. 'Unless regular fresh surface samples are tested in labs, we cannot get accurate results,' said a soil scientist, adding that online records alone cannot replace lab analysis.
However, with only five labs and just two mobile testing units for the entire delta region, many farmers are unable to access timely services. Mayiladuthurai district has no lab of its own and must rely on Nagapattinam's.
'Even drinking water has turned saline,' said Vellamperambur Durai Ramesh, of the Cauvery Urimai Meetpu Kuzhu. 'Several villages in Thanjavur and Thiruvaiyar now report poor water-soil integration. Village-level soil testing is essential—we can't travel to town every time, and most farmers still apply fertilisers by guesswork.'
Vayalur N. Rajendran, Treasurer of the Farmers' Wing of Tamil Maanila Congress, added, 'Even when farmers get test results, the advisory is weak. Key micronutrients are not stocked in government co-operatives, forcing farmers to tap private markets. Testing alone is not enough—follow-up support must be ensured.'
In Tiruchi, agricultural officer M. Nagaraj from the Soil Testing Centre said awareness was growing among farmers, particularly those interested in fruit cultivation and plantations. 'Many now voluntarily bring in elite soil samples for analysis,' he said. At just ₹30 per sample, the tests provide clear and actionable results.

Centre approves two semiconductor units for Odisha
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday said the Union Cabinet's approval for the establishment of two semiconductor units in Odisha will accelerate the state's growth in the CM expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the Centre's approval of the two semiconductor units in Odisha. Opposition BJD, which had announced the Odisha Semiconductor Manufacturing and Fabless Policy 2023, said: "While other states were only announcing semiconductor units in 2024, the decision by the Union Cabinet to approve two such units in Odisha today is truly commendable." BJD senior vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra at a press conference here, expressed confidence that the state government will take proactive steps to develop the required supporting ecosystem for these units within the stipulated in the day, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four more semiconductor projects under India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), two of which will come to Odisha and one each for Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. After the Union Cabinet meeting, Vaishnaw said that a silicon carbide semiconductor plant will be set up in Bhubaneswar with an investment of Rs 2,066 crore by SiCsem. "Silicon carbide is a very robust material and can sustain at high temperatures. Silicon carbide is used in our missiles, satellites, telecom towers, rockets, railway engines, etc," Vaishnaw said. The minister said that the plant will have a capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per Cabinet also approved US chip major Intel-backed 3D Glass semiconductor manufacturing unit in Odisha with an investment of Rs 1,943 crore. The plant will be set up by Heterogenous Integration Packaging Solutions Pvt Ltd with an annual production capacity of 5 crore units."I sincerely express my gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon'ble Union Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw ji for the Central Cabinet's approval of the establishment of two semiconductor manufacturing units in Odisha," Majhi said in a post on chief minister said the recent amendment of the Odisha Semiconductor Manufacturing and Fabless Policy, aimed at enhancing investment viability, competitiveness, and sustainability, together with this significant Cabinet approval, marks a major milestone in the state's industrial and technological advancement."This collaborative effort will accelerate innovation, generate employment, and strengthen Odisha's position as a vital contributor towards the vision of #AtmanirbharBharat. This compound semiconductor fab will have an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and packaging capacity of 96 million units. The proposed products will have applications in missiles, defence equipment, electric vehicles (EVs), railway, fast chargers, data centre racks, consumer appliances, and solar power inverters, an official statement said.3D Glass Solutions Inc (3DGS) will be setting up a vertically integrated advanced packaging and embedded glass substrate unit in Info Valley, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. This unit will bring the world's most advanced packaging technology to India. An Artificial intelligence (AI) based early warning system for the safety of wildlife will be implemented at all railway lines passing through forests, said Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, on Tuesday. 'We are trying to do that across all the railway lines that run through jungles and run near jungles. This is going to be implemented not only for elephants, but for other wildlife also. We have a lot of tiger deaths happening, also [due to train hits] and other wild animals. It will be implemented in all such areas. From the Centre, we are taking it to implement it as fast as possible', he said. The Minister, when asked whether his Ministry would replicate a successful AI-based warning system, which Tamil Nadu implemented on railway tracks to prevent elephant deaths at Madukkarai near Coimbatore. Mr. Singh, who attended World Elephant Day celebrations in Coimbatore on Tuesday, said human - animal conflict was one of the top priorities of the Ministry. 'We are taking all precautions and employing the latest methods to lessen and mitigate the situation. We are using radio collars, satellites and artificial intelligence. But the sad fact is that since human communities live so closely with nature. So if you ask me can we make 100 % proof, no we can't. Because we live with them... But we are taking all possible policies and plans to reduce it as much as possible,' he said on the sidelines of the celebrations.
