The Smuggler: New BBC Radio 4 podcast series follows the life of a former British army soldier turned people smuggler
Everyone thinks they know who people smugglers are. They're people from 'somewhere else', far away from the UK. But what if we're wrong, what if some of the people illegally smuggling migrants into the UK are actually from here? British people smugglers with an intimate knowledge of our borders.
A new 10-part podcast series for BBC Radio 4 presented by investigative journalist Annabel Deas (Orwell Prize winner 2021), explores how 'Nick', a former soldier in the British Army, became a people smuggler working with organised crime gangs from Albania and Vietnam based in the UK. He has twice been to prison for his crimes. Shadow World: The Smuggler is an intimate portrait of a British people smuggler - hearing from the perpetrator directly, to uncover his motivations, methods and the consequences of risking the lives of desperate people.
The investigation exposes how the smuggling techniques Nick used are still possible today and details the ease with which smugglers can bring migrants into the UK without being caught. Everyone knows about smugglers who bring migrants in on small boats but the methods Nick used are rarely heard about. Across the series, he reveals how he illegally smuggled migrants onto cross channel ferries inside cars and lorries, and how he used private marinas to bring migrants into the UK hidden inside a sailboat.
The investigation also exposes the ease with which foreign nationals with previous criminal records in the UK were able to operate an international smuggling ring – as Nick first becomes involved with an Albanian organised crime gang based near London and then a Vietnamese woman with previous convictions for running cannabis farms in England.
Presenter Annabel Deas says "No one expects to meet a people smuggler, let alone someone as unguarded and open as "Nick", a former British soldier about the same age as me. I thought I knew who people smugglers were and what they did - but I was completely wrong. My investigation takes us deep into the UK's hidden criminal landscape, where a British man became entwined with Albanian and Vietnamese crime gangs who were able to operate with impunity using techniques which the authorities appear powerless to stop."

Greg went missing in the early hours of last Wednesday morning after flying out to the resort for a five-day stag do. He later told pals he was heading back to his holiday apartment on his own during their first night out after several hours of partying and drinking. His worried parents and his girlfriend Nicole Ashleigh Kelso have travelled to the party resort for search for Greg amid growing fears he got lost on his first night out and could have suffered an accident. His return flight to Scotland was booked to leave last Friday afternoon. Today, Greg's cousin Alison Fraser, who is in Portugal looking for her relative, said the last official sighting of Greg was at 3.27 am on Wednesday, May 28. Two Brit gangsters shot dead in holiday hotspot died next to terrified 'wife'
Scottish gangsters Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr were brutally killed in a Costa del Sol resort town this weekend - and a woman said to have been married to one of them reportedly witnessed the attack The 'wife' of one of the two Scottish gangsters assassinated at a popular Irish bar on the Costa del Sol this weekend is said to have witnessed the shooting. Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jr, 46, were gunned down in front of terrified tourists including families on Saturday night. The Mafia-style execution is said to have happened as people were watching the Champion League final. According to local media, one of the men's partners witnessed the attack. The incident happened on the terrace of Monaghans in Fuengirola when a masked man got out of a car and opened fire. The second target was said to have ran into the bar as staff and customers ducked underneath tables and chairs. It has been reported that he was shot at least four times in the chest and abdomen and also died at the bar. The gunman fled on foot before re-joining the accomplice who had driven him to the murder scene. Police have retraced part of their escape route to the old N-340 dual carriageway heading towards Benalmadena. Details about the make and colour of the getaway vehicle have not yet been released. Officers from an elite Spanish National Police Costa del Sol -based Anti-Drug and Organised Crime Unit UDYCO are heading the ongoing probe, although they are reporting to a local investigating judge coordinating the operation. Court officials are expected to confirm later today a secrecy order has been placed on the investigation, preventing public officials from making detailed public comment. Some local reports point to witnesses identifying the shooter as a 'blond man' and investigators working on the theory British nationals are behind the gangland killing, but detectives have not commented. The shooting in Spain comes amid a violent gang war that has ripped through Scotland in recent months following an alleged dispute over drugs. Spain's National Police confirmed two men were killed but declined to name them, saying: 'Around midnight on Saturday an incident with firearms occurred in Fuengirola, specifically at an entertainment venue along the seafront. Two males died as a result from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made so far.' Career criminal Monaghan, who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life outside a Glasgow primary school in 2017, was tried but acquitted over the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll at an Asda car park in 2010. In August 2017, he and Eddie Lyons Jr, both members of the Lyons crime family in Glasgow, were cleared of being involved in a brutal street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire.

Families of Chinook crash victims to launch legal action against MoD
The families of those killed in a Chinook helicopter crash on the Mull of Kintyre in 1994 have said they are beginning legal action against the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for not ordering a public inquiry. They want a High Court judge to be able to review information which they say was not included in previous investigations, and which they believe will shed new light on the airworthiness of the helicopter. RAF Chinook ZD576 was carrying 25 British intelligence personnel from RAF Aldergrove in Northern Ireland to a conference at Fort George near Inverness when it crashed in foggy weather on June 2, 1994. All 25 passengers – made up of personnel from MI5, the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the British Army – were killed, along with the helicopter's four crew members. The families of the victims, who have coalesced into the Chinook Justice Campaign, said failing to order a public inquiry is a breach of the UK Government's human rights obligations. In a letter to the Government 31 years after the crash, the group said: 'The investigations conducted to date, whether considered individually or in combination, have failed to discharge the investigative duty.' They have also called for the release of documents that were sealed at the time of the crash for 100 years, something revealed in a BBC documentary last year. Solicitor Mark Stephens, who is representing the families, said: 'In this case, the families of those who were killed have seen more than enough evidence to convince them, and us, that there was a failure by the MoD to apply appropriate safeguards in order to protect the passengers and crew. 'In fact, they were put on board an aircraft that was known to be positively dangerous and should never have taken off. 'That is why we are seeking a judicial review into the Government's failure to hold a public inquiry – which the families have sought for more than a year.' Following the crash, the Chinook's pilots, Flight Lieutenants Richard Cook and Jonathan Tapper, were accused of gross negligence, but this verdict was overturned by the UK Government 17 years later, following a campaign by the families. A subsequent review by Lord Philip set out 'numerous concerns' raised by those who worked on the Chinooks, with the MoD's testing centre at Boscombe Down in Wiltshire declaring the Chinook Mk2 helicopters 'unairworthy' prior to the crash. Esme Sparks, who was seven years old when her father Major Gary Sparks was killed in the crash, said: 'We don't want to have to take legal action against the Government and MoD but we do want and need answers surrounding the circumstance of this crash. 'We want to know who or what is being protected? Who made the decision to let this helicopter take off? What is being hidden? In our view, a public inquiry is key.' Andy Tobias, who was eight when his father, Lt Col John Tobias, 41, was killed, said: 'It's clear to me that a complete lack of duty of care was given to those passengers because they got on a Chinook that wasn't fit for flight. 'And really, the government need to show their duty of candour and really be open and transparent about what's in those documents and give us the opportunity to really understand anything that's in them that could give us more answers about what happened.' The MoD said that records held in The National Archives contain personal information and early release of those documents would breach their data protection rights. An MoD spokesperson said: 'The Mull of Kintyre crash was a tragic accident and our thoughts and sympathies remain with the families, friends and colleagues of all those who died.'
