Hawkesbury Thursday preview: Doyle has Motive for milestone

Daily Telegraph14-05-2025

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Newcastle trainer Nathan Doyle is on the cusp of 300 career winners and can bring up the milestone this week, possibly at Hawkesbury.
Doyle currently sits on 297 winners and can make a winning start to the day with Hidden Motive in the opening race, the 2YO Maiden Plate (1100m).
The son of Capitalist and Group 1 winner Secret Agenda showed his talent in the early two-year-old trials and a fourth in the Breeders Plate last spring.
He returned with a close second to Aerodrome at Warwick Farm on April 16 before a third to Grand Eagle at Randwick 10 days later.
'He ran a super race first-up when he and Aerodrome went head-and-head the whole way,' said David Dyson, racing manager for Nathan Doyle.

'They cleared out and beat the others by a fair way so it was a very good performance in defeat.
'He may have raced a little flat at Randwick last start with only 10 days between runs.
'He now drops back to provincial grade and I think we have found a very suitable race for him to open his winning account.
'He hasn't drawn too badly in barrier eight. He rolls forward and puts himself on speed so he'll certainly give a good account of himself.'
Queen's Rhapsody has also shown plenty of ability in her short career with four second placings from as many starts and all in metropolitan company.
The daughter of So You Think only joined Doyle's stable earlier this year and is looking to kick off her preparation on a winning note in the 3YO Maiden Handicap (1100m).
'If you look at the horses she has finished behind – Sakima, Flying For Fun, Gerringong and Crepe Myrtle – if they were in a race like this, they are winning and winning quite convincingly,' said Dyson.
'We all know horses are a confidence animal and it would be nice to see her knock one off at the start of the preparation and she if she can improve through it.
The three-year-old has been very good in winning both recent trials, the latest by over a length from Renoir at Newcastle on May 7.
• Tears of torment turn to joy in Cole's inspiring return to saddle
'She was very sharp in her first trial and Nathan wanted to give her a solid hit out in her second one with this race in mind,' Dyson.
'He wanted her to win the trial and give her that confidence heading into the race.
'We expect her to acquit herself very well.'
Caltsar kicked off his career with a smart win from Proclivity in a Midway Maiden on a heavy track at Newcastle on April 23 and can make it two in-a-row should he start in the Midway Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m).
'He's a lovely horse. The penny still hasn't quite dropped and is learning as he goes along but in 12 months, I think he could be something quite good,' Dyson said.
'It took him a long time to get to top gear but once he did, he really put them away in a couple of bounds.
'If he keep improving, he's going to be metropolitan standard.
'He's also in at Scone on Friday in a Class 1 over the mile where he has drawn barrier five.
'Nathan and his connections will weigh up both options.'
Doyle also has another new stable addition, Owen County, in the same race.
'It says eleventh out of twelve in the form (but) he got held up and it took his momentum away completely,' Dyson said.
'If he can keep his momentum up this week over the mile, he will run an improved race but when he gets to 2000m is when we will see him perform at his best.'

Trainer John Sargent was pleased to see a much improved performance from Ocean Diva last time out and expects her to figure prominently again at Hawkesbury.
The four-year-old contacted the off-side gate on jumping and was always well back when resuming at Goulburn but was back to her true form when a nose second behind Dreamdeel after leading over the mile at Gosford on April 25.
'That was more like it. She just needs a run of two to get fit,' said John Sargent.
'I thought she just about won that day, she just got nabbed on the line and she has improved with that run.'
Ocean Diva stays at the 1600m when she contests the Midway Benchmark 64 Handicap.
'She will be on speed in the running. From the inside draw, she will either lead or trail and obviously, she likes the sting out of the track too,' he said.
'I expect a good run from her again.
• Flying local Know Thyself sneaks into Scone Cup field
Last preparation, the daughter of Ocean Park led all-the-way to win at Goulburn before a fourth to Flying Bandit in a Midway Handicap over 1800m at Randwick and Sargent is looking to get her back to town after this assignment.
'I nearly put her in the Midway at Scone on Saturday but I just thought this would suit her close to home on her way through to a Midway.
'Hopefully she can go from here up to 2000m. I'm very happy with her and she has trained on really well.'
Stablemate Perfect Justice could earn himself a trip north for the Queensland Derby should he be victorious in the Class 1 And Maiden Plate (2000m).
The son of Justify followed a Canberra maiden win with two seconds before stepping up to the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill where he finished second last on a heavy track behind Pocketing.
He appreciate a better surface when third to Junebug at Wyong last start.
'Molly (Bourke) said as soon as he jumped, he was gone in the Tulloch Stakes. He was way out the back and didn't handle it for a yard,' he said.
'As long as the Hawkesbury track stays in the soft range, then he should run another good race.
'He too will race up on speed, Molly knows him and he's well in at the weights.
'If he happens to win, then he would probably go up to Queensland.
'He's a good stayer and this looks a nice race for him.'

Sophie Monk lands big US TV gig

Love Island Australia host Sophie Monk has landed a big US TV gig, hosting a talk show offshoot for the American version of the show. Monk will be the new host of Love Island USA Aftersun, a weekly talk show featuring interviews with contestants and behind-the-scenes gossip from the show. She replaces current Aftersun host Maura Higgins, a former Love Island USA and UK contestant. Love Island USA announced the new appointment on its socials over the weekend, earning a positive reaction from fans and even the show's outgoing host: 'Yesss Queen,' wrote a supportive Higgins. It marks a big career leap for Monk, 45, who has hosted Love Island Australia across all six of its seasons. The US television role will mark Monk's return to the market, following a successful LA stint in the early noughties that saw her appear in films like Date Movie, Click and in an episode of the TV show Entourage. The TV host, who first shot to fame as one-fifth of the Popstars girl group Bardot, spent 10 years living in the US and trying to make it big as an actor before returning home to Australia in 2015. Monk's career news comes days after she made another big move – selling what is believed to have been her first ever home on the Gold Coast for $595,000. She'd purchased the unit in 2003 for just $165,000. It's the second home sale Monk's made in the past 12 months: She'd earlier sold a five-bedroom, three-bathroom Helensvale home for $1.76 million in 2024. Monk's also making a return to the big screen with her next project: She'll appear in the horror-comedy film Zombie Plane, alongside a slew of other stars including Vanilla Ice, Chuck Norris and Joey Vieira, all playing fictionalised versions of themselves.

The show that will replace The Project revealed

As whispers get louder that Network 10 is on the verge of axing The Project, the show tipped to replace the struggling program has been revealed. According to TV Blackbox, the network plans to launch a new, harder-hitting current affairs program titled Behind the Lines – A 10 News First Investigation. The outlet reports that the brand-new show is currently in development at the network's Sydney newsroom, with former 7 News Spotlight reporter Denham Hitchcock tipped to come on board as host. It is understood that staff at the long-running program have been briefed of the pending cancellation this week after months of speculation that the show would get the boot. Unlike The Project that aired six nights a week, its reported replacement is set to air four nights a week at 6.30pm timeslot for only thirty minutes, a big change from The Project 's hour-long shows. Development of Behind the Lines has reportedly been underway for quite some time and it could be launched as soon as next month with TV Blackbox tipping July or August as the official launch. has reached out to Network 10 for comment. Once an iconic mainstay of current affairs television in Australia since it debuted in 2009, The Project has struggled in recent years to keep hold of its audience as viewing habits have shifted from live free-to-air TV to streaming. Ratings for the beloved panel show have halved in recent years and sparked numerous rumours about its demise which Ten have previously denied. Last week, entertainment expert Peter Ford told 3AW Breakfast that he believed the show would be gone 'sooner rather than later', and will be replaced by a show based in Sydney. 'I don't think The Project will see the year out,' Ford said on-air. Broadcast television has struggled across the board in recent years with the shift to streaming hitting networks hard. Last year alone, Channel 10 rested The Masked Singer, The Bachelor and Gladiators from its schedule.

Queensland Maroons Origin II squad: Daly Cherry-Evans dropped for Tom Dearden

Ricky Stuart has suggested Queensland has broken its pick-and-stick culture by dropping captain Daly Cherry-Evans for State of Origin II to play Tom Dearden at number seven. Maroons coach Billy Slater on Monday confirmed his 20-man squad for the must-win clash, with Cherry-Evans missing from the side. Second-rower Beau Fermor has also been dropped, with Kurt Capewell returning to the side and Kurt Mann the new number 14, with Dearden at halfback. Ezra Mam has also been named as a reserve as part of an extended squad, just three NRL games after his comeback from a drug-driving ban. The Brisbane five-eighth will undergo scans on Monday morning in order to be cleared to join camp, after suffering a knock to his knee on Saturday night. Canberra forward Corey Horsburgh and Melbourne centre Jack Howarth are expected to be the other reserves, after Queensland was beaten 18-6 in the series opener. But it is the dropping of Cherry-Evans that has created shockwaves, with the halfback the first Maroons captain dropped mid-series in almost 30 years. Speaking before the 36-year-old's non-selection was confirmed on Sunday, former Blues halfback and coach Stuart had a subtle dig at those north of the border. "Queensland have got this culture of they pick and stick," the current Canberra coach said. "They've got this culture that they talk about in regards to, you know, hanging tough in tough times. "So I think that Cherry-Evans will keep his position unless they're going to break their culture. "[Otherwise] they're going to break their attitude in regards to what they've been promoting for so many years." The Maroons have long preached about a pick-and-stick culture, which was evident through their dynasty between 2006 and 2017. Stuart coached NSW in two of those seasons, falling to series losses in 2011 and 2012. Blues players were also surprised when told of Cherry-Evans's omission on Sunday afternoon. "It's their call," second-rower Liam Martin said. "Obviously they were disappointed with the first game. That's Billy's call, it's what they think is right for the team. But we've just got to respond to that now." Dearden has started in the halves four times previously for Queensland, after first partnering Cherry-Evans in the Maroons' 2022 series-decider success. The 24-year-old played five-eighth for Australia in last year's Pacific Cup win, and has had an impressive start to 2025 with North Queensland. Dearden has scored four tries for the Cowboys, set up 11 and created 16 line breaks, bettering Cherry-Evans's numbers at Manly in all categories. QUEENSLAND SQUAD FOR STATE OF ORIGIN II: Kalyn Ponga, Xavier Coates, Robert Toia, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Valentine Holmes, Cameron Munster, Tom Dearden, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Harry Grant, Moeaki Fotuaika, Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai, Pat Carrigan, Kurt Mann, Lindsay Collins, Kurt Capewell, Trent Loiero, Ezra Mam, Jack Howarth, Corey Horsburgh.
