PM: Don't bar UMS student demonstrators from continuing their studies
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to ensure that students involved in the recent incident of burning a caricature of him are not barred from continuing their academic journey.
The prime minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the future of the youth should not be sacrificed in the face of differing views.
He said that as a former student activist and reformist, Anwar has consistently defended freedom of speech as enshrined in the Constitution.
"The recent incident involving the burning of a caricature of the prime minister in Kota Kinabalu serves as a reminder of the people's deep hope that corruption will be eradicated at its roots.
"The prime minister himself emerged from the student movement and once led the 'reformasi' movement in the streets, which gives him a genuine understanding of that voice. He has witnessed firsthand that criticism, no matter how harsh, is a vital part of celebrating democracy.
"In line with the Madani approach, which prioritises compassion, the prime minister has also instructed the MOHE and UMS to ensure that the students involved are not barred from continuing their academic journey. The future of the youth should not be sacrificed in the face of differing views," he said during the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing today.
Tunku Nashrul said Anwar had emphasised that the spirit of change begins with the courage of young people to speak the truth, guided by facts and sincere intentions.
On the government's part, he said, its commitment to reform remains strong and is already being translated into concrete action.
"This commitment will not stop here; it will continue to be refined and implemented in a structured manner.
"For the sake of future generations, the Madani government will continue on the path of reform, ensuring that every effort to combat corruption leads to the well-being and prosperity of all Malaysians," he said.
Earlier today, police said they detained three participants of the Sabah Gempur Rasuah 2.0 after recording their statements.
Kota Kinabalu police chief, Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said that all three were detained under the Sedition Act, and for burning a caricature of the prime minister.
"All three were detained after having their statements recorded regarding the act of vandalism on a student's vehicle and the organisation of the assembly, he said.

Malaysia's Iran Stand Upholds Global Justice Principles
WORLD KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's stance in supporting Iran's right to defend its sovereignty following attacks by Israel is seen as appropriate and consistent with the principles of universal justice and international law. International affairs and political analyst from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, said Iran's retaliation against Israel's attacks is justified under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognises the right to self-defence. 'Iran's act of self-defence is legitimate under international law, whereas Israel's attacks clearly violate that law. Therefore, Malaysia's position in supporting Iran in this context is appropriate and grounded in the principles of global justice,' he said. He was speaking as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme on the topic, 'Iran-Israel (Rogue State) Conflict: A Spark for World War? aired tonight. Malaysia had earlier expressed concern over the rising tensions between Iran and Israel, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterating that violence is not a viable solution. However, within the framework of universal justice, Malaysia recognises Iran's right to respond to any form of aggression that violates its sovereignty. Meanwhile, Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia (IKRAM) president Badlishah Sham Baharin stressed that Malaysia's position on this matter stems from its long-standing commitment to defending the rights of oppressed Palestinians. 'Malaysia has consistently defended the rights of the oppressed. For example, we have long been one of the strongest voices on the global stage advocating for the Palestinian cause. 'When this (attack) happened to Iran, Malaysia once again stood up to condemn Israel's unwarranted aggression, as there is no international law that allows one country to attack another sovereign state under any pretext,' he said.

MPBC Gathers Over 250 Members To Boost Malaysia–Pakistan Ties

MPBC acting chairman Usman Ahmed said the key initiative to drive this agenda is the establishment of the Malaysia–Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, formally recognised by both governments. 'Our aim has always been to have a joint chamber of commerce between Malaysia and Pakistan—legally recognised by both governments and authorised to operate in both countries. 'The chairmanship will rotate, alternating between representatives from Pakistan and Malaysia. This is the only way to truly foster trade and investment between the two countries,' he told Bernama at the MPBC Networking Reception and Dinner, today. Among the Malaysian government agencies present were the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). Established in 2013, MPBC promotes bilateral trade, tourism and investment between Malaysia and Pakistan. Usman, who is also the chief executive officer of Gamalux Oils Sdn Bhd, said MPBC has taken proactive steps to reposition itself as a key trade facilitator between the two countries. 'The council's recent meetings and discussions highlight an urgent need to streamline governance, enhance visibility, improve trade engagement, and establish sustainable institutional practices,' he said. He added that beyond 2025, the council aims to strengthen Malaysia–Pakistan economic ties through structured trade facilitation, diaspora engagement, policy advocacy and strategic institutional reform by 2030.
