Lifeguards, good Samaritan rescue 3 teens kayaking off Kaneohe
Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards and a good Samaritan boater today rescued three teenagers who got into trouble in bad weather while kayaking near Kipapa Island in Kaneohe Bay.
At about 2 :30, a 911 caller reported the three kayakers in distressed, according to an Ocean Safety spokesperson.
Lifeguards searched for the three boys, all age 17, under difficult search conditions, including heavy rains, thunder and lighting, and were able to locate one at about 3 :15 p.m. off of Kipapa Island, according to Ocean Safety.
The boy was brought safely to shore at Heeia Kea Pier and Ocean Safety officials were told that a good Samaritan boater had brought the other two boys safely to shore.
The three teens were not injured and did not require medical attention, officials said.
'Ocean Safety strongly advises the public to always check the weather conditions before going out onto the water, ' the spokesperson said. 'Lifeguards also emphasize the use of wearing life jackets and carrying a cell phone when on an ocean watercraft including kayaks and boats.'

High surf along Oahu's North Shore keeps city lifeguards busy
Honolulu Ocean Safety and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to a number of 911 calls today along the North Shore amid surf that produced 12-foot and higher faces. Just after 8 a.m., lifeguards rescued a surfer who injured her shoulder off Mokuleia near the surf spot known as Silvas. Lifeguards brought the 29-year-old Waialua woman to shore via Jet Ski. She was evaluated on the scene by an EMS crew and declined transport to an emergency room, according to Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesperson Shayne Enright. Then just before 9 :30 a.m., an off-duty lifeguard and mobile lifeguard personnel responded to a report of two swimmers struggling to stay afloat in the waters at Three Tables. Lifeguards safely brought both to shore and they did not require medical attention, Enright said. A short while later, lifeguards at Sharks Cove assisted a 38-year-old visitor who suffered a head injury and multiple lacerations after he was knocked off his feet into the ocean by a wave. The man cut himself multiple times on the reef but was able to get out of the water on his own, Enright said. Lifeguards began medical treatment and transferred his care to a Honolulu EMS crew, which transported him to an emergency room in serious condition. 'Honolulu Ocean Safety reminds all beachgoers to check ocean conditions prior to going in or near the ocean. Roan Mountain State Park prepares for summer season despite Hurricane Damage
ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WJHL)—Many state parks are beginning to open for the season, welcoming the public back onto their trails. However, Roan Mountain State Park faces a new set of challenges this season. In September, Hurricane Helene hit the park, causing devastation that led to closures throughout the park. 'One of the biggest things is the bridge here in the campground,' Park Director Monica Johnson said. 'Going up to our upper areas, it's pretty much washed completely out. At least half of the bridge is completely destroyed.' Greeneville native wins $100k at Major League Fishing All-Star tournament Johnson said the park began canceling summer reservations for the upper campsite in March, including reservations for Memorial Day weekend. 'It's one of our busiest weekends of the year and kicks off our season,' she said. 'So we definitely felt the impact from having to do that, and the disappointment that we received from our visitors.' Johnson said that since the roads to the upper campsite belong to TDOT, it may be a while before it's ready for cars again. 'We're kind of at the mercy of TDOT,' she said. 'And that's taking a little bit longer than they had originally planned, because the projects ended up being than what they originally thought. The upper loops are closed currently through August 31. It will probably be closed for the rest of the season, just based on some of the information I've got back from the Department of Transportation.' Despite the disappointment, the public has continued to show up and provide support for the park. 'We're still seeing that impact,' Johnson said. 'But we still have the support of people coming to the campground and camping in the lower area, staying in the cabins, going to the gift shops, and purchasing souvenir items.
