Solar Orbiter captures images of the sun's pole for the first time
Three of the probe's instruments were responsible for the images. The Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) imaged the sun in visible light and mapped its surface magnetic field. Meanwhile, the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) imaged the sun in ultraviolet light, and the Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) instrument captured light "coming from different temperatures of charged gas above the sun's surface, thereby revealing different layers of the sun's atmosphere."
So what exactly was the Solar Orbiter able to observe at the sun's southern pole? Well, the pole's magnetic field, simply put, is a mess at the moment. See, the sun's magnetic field flips roughly every 11 years, and it's about to flip this year if it hasn't yet. Normally, a magnet has a clear north and south pole, but the orbiter's PHI instrument showed that both north and south polarity magnetic fields are present at the sun's south pole right now. "This happens only for a short time during each solar cycle, at solar maximum, when the Sun's magnetic field flips and is at its most active," ESA explained.
After the flip, the magnetic field fixes itself so that the poles have single polarities. The process is gradual, however, and it will take five to six years to achieve solar minimum, wherein which the sun's magnetic field is at its most orderly. These solar cycles or regular magnetic field flips aren't fully understood yet, and the orbiter's observations could be the key to unlocking that knowledge.
In addition, scientists used the orbiter's SPICE instrument to take Doppler measurements, or how fast clumps of solar material are moving. They then took that information to create a velocity map that shows how solar material moves within a specific layer of the sun. These measurements can show how the sun flings out particles into space in the form of solar winds, which is one of the orbiter's key goals.

A hidden lake beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet unexpectedly drained more than a decade ago, fracturing the ice surface and forming a large crater — an event only recently uncovered by Earth-observing satellites. The massive ice sheet, located in a remote region of northern Greenland, harbors a subglacial lake that appears to have flooded in 2014, releasing 23.8 billion gallons (90 million cubic meters) of meltwater over the course of 10 days — roughly equivalent to nine hours of peak flow over Niagara Falls. The meltwater from the subglacial lake surged upwards, the satellites showed, bursting through the ice surface. The rapid flooding that followed carved a crater 279 feet (85 meters) deep and 0.77 square miles (2 square kilometers) wide into the surface of the ice sheet. The flood's upward force also lifted blocks of ice 82 feet (25 meters) above the surface and left behind deep fractures and scoured markings, according to a statement from the European Space Agency (ESA). "The existence of subglacial lakes beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet is still a relatively recent discovery, and — as our study shows — there is still much we don't know about how they evolve and how they can impact on the ice sheet system," Jade Bowling, lead author of the study from Lancaster University, said in the statement. "Importantly, our work demonstrates the need to better understand how often they drain, and, critically, what the consequences are for the surrounding ice sheet." This startling event was discovered using data from multiple Earth-observing satellites, including ESA's CryoSat, the Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 missions, and NASA's ICESat-2, as well as 3D models of the ice sheet surface from the ArcticDEM project. The amount of meltwater released from underneath the ice in 2014 is considered one of the largest recorded subglacial floods in Greenland, according to the statement. Beyond revealing the dramatic surface changes, the satellite data has reshaped scientists' understanding of how water behaves under ice. Previously, scientists believed meltwater generally flowed down from the surface to the ice base, eventually draining into the ocean. This study shows that water can also flow upward, forced through the ice by intense pressure, even in areas previously thought to have frozen beds. This upward surge of water fractured the overlying ice sheet, creating new channels for the water to escape. This kind of upward water flow could affect how ice sheets respond to a warming world, which has not yet been accounted for in current climate models. Understanding these processes is key to improving predictions of Greenland's contribution to future sea-level rise, the researchers said. Their findings were published on Wednesday (July 30) in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Huge crater discovered in Greenland ice sheet
A massive flood that breached the Greenland ice sheet in 2014 created a huge crater that is now being researched, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced on Wednesday. Approximately 90 million cubic metres of water from an underground lake are said to have shot out of the ground within 10 days, which roughly corresponds to the volume of water that flows over Niagara Falls in nine hours. The ESA referred to the findings of an international research team, which have now been published in the journal Nature Geoscience. Satellite data, including from the ESA, were studied under the leadership of scientists from Lancaster University and the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling in the United Kingdom. The water that emerged is meltwater, and its formation could have been encouraged by climate change and the higher temperatures it has caused, the researchers said. The result of the flood is a massive crater - 2 square kilometres in size and 85 metres deep - in the uninhabited north of the island.
