Birmingham teen charged with capital murder in killing of 22-year-old
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham teen is facing a charge of capital murder in the shooting death of a 22-year-old.
Jeremy Thomas, 18, was arrested on February 5 in connection with the fatal shooting of Xavier Colvert, according to Birmingham police.

Nearly a week ago, on January 31, Colvert was discovered shot in a vehicle on the 1500 block of 57th Street Ensley. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced Colvert dead at the scene.
Thomas, of Birmingham, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

(KGET) — Bakersfield is near the top of the list when it comes to car thefts in the country, and now police are sounding the alarm that luxury pickup trucks are getting ripped off. An undercover BPD officer says thieves are using auto diagnostic tools to start the trucks and disconnect OnStar systems so the trucks can't be tracked. They're even punching through the glass to open the door to bypass the push button start. Four people arrested on suspicion of stealing multiple Arvin Public Works trucks: Arvin PD 'The police department said that they're an organized ring and they're coming to Kern County to steal trucks to fill their orders,' Chief Operating Officer John Pitre with the Motor City Auto Center said. Over the last two months, there's been a surge of high-end truck thefts targeting 2018 and 2023 GMC Sierra half-ton and three-quarter ton pickups with the AT4 or Denali trims. 'Exotic suspension systems, wheels and tires, big brakes, high-power engines, leather interiors. I don't really think they're going after these trucks for a particular feature. (WIAT) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is encouraging people to be aware of a phishing scheme targeting Alabamians with text messages falsely claiming to be from the 'Alabama Department of Vehicles (DMV).' These messages are threatening to suspend the recipients' driving privileges and suspend vehicle registrations unless they click on a malicious link or provide personal information. Typically, these messages demand payment for non-existent traffic tickets. State officials have emphasized that there is no such entity as the 'Alabama DMV,' and driver licensing services in Alabama are handled by ALEA's Driver License Division. Vehicle registration is handled by the Alabama Department of Revenue, and license plates are issued through local county probate offices. 'Organized group' linked to 10 separate shootings in Tuscaloosa County 'Scammers are trying to create a false sense of urgency by threatening you and your drivingprivileges,' ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said in a statement. 'We urge all Alabamians to be cautious and remember that our Agency will never contact you this way.' According to ALEA, any unsolicited text message claiming to be ALEA or its Driver License Division should be considered suspicious and deleted. The event will last from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., opening with a guest lecture from Richie Steffen, Executive Director of the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden. Steffen's lecture, titled 'Victorian Ideas for the Modern Shade Garden,' will focus on different ferns and shade garden plants that can be incorporated into modern gardens. Steffen is the co-author and co-photographer of 'The Plant Lover's Guide to Ferns.'
