National Bank of Bahrain opens tier 3 certified data centre

Zawya10-07-2025
Bahrain - The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has officially opened its newly revamped data centre, solidifying the bank's digital infrastructure.
NBB is now the first and only bank in Bahrain to have designed, built and operated its own Uptime Institute Tier 3 certified Data Centre, a distinction that signifies adherence to the highest international standards for operational reliability and infrastructure quality.
The inauguration follows an 18-month strategic infrastructure transformation, supported by the Central Bank of Bahrain. This initiative involved modernising legacy systems and completing over eight phased migration activities, demonstrating what NBB called 'best-in-class risk management and execution.'
The seamless transition of the bank's digital ecosystem has resulted in a Tier 3 certified facility, meeting top international standards for security, sustainability, and operational excellence.
Commenting on the milestone, NBB Group chief executive Usman Ahmed said, 'The new data centre represents NBB's continued investment in infrastructure that delivers long-term resilience.' He added that it strengthens the bank's operational backbone while advancing its ESG goals by embedding energy-optimised technology directly into its core infrastructure.
'Delivering a transformation of this scale required synchronised execution from teams working across multiple phases to ensure a smooth transition,' Mr Ahmed said. 'Every aspect of this major project was guided by a commitment to providing a frictionless and stable experience for customers. We are incredibly proud of what the NBB team and its partners have built together.'
NBB stated its continued focus on digital innovation and operational excellence, reinforcing its role in enhancing service delivery standards within Bahrain's banking sector.

EGA, ENEC deliver first aluminium produced with carbon-free nuclear energy

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) today announced the UAE's first delivery of low-carbon aluminium using electricity generated at Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. EGA is marketing this type of low-carbon aluminium under the product brand MinimAL. The metal will be supplied to CANEX Aluminum, Egypt's leading aluminium downstream producer. EGA's new product positions the UAE as a reliable supplier of low-carbon industrial materials to global markets and expands EGA's low-carbon metal portfolio for our local and global customers. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, said, 'This milestone shows how nuclear energy is boosting national energy security and enabling the UAE's industrial decarbonisation in parallel, reliably powering energy-intensive sectors like aluminium production with clean electricity 24/7. Through the abundant electricity generated at Barakah, we have unlocked the significant, proven and long-term benefits of nuclear energy to power the UAE's low-carbon economy for decades to come.' Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said, 'Global demand for low carbon aluminium is expected to triple by 2040, and EGA aims to play an important role in this growth. MinimAL is our latest low-carbon product, made possible through the UAE's investment in nuclear power generation. We are glad to be working with ENEC to supply more low carbon aluminium to the world.' Mutassem Daaboul, Managing Director of CANEX Aluminum, said, 'At CANEX, we believe true sustainability is built into every layer of production - from the raw material to the final product. Our upcycling model already transforms waste into value-added products. Now, with MinimAL, we are taking another step forward by reducing embedded emissions at the very beginning of our process.' The clean electricity is certified through the UAE's Clean Energy Certification programme using International REC Standard (I-REC) protocols to ensure traceability and credibility. The power is supplied through Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) via the national grid. The Barakah plant generates 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, which is around 25 per cent of the UAE's electricity needs, and equivalent to the annual total power demand of Switzerland. Carbon-free electricity from Barakah avoids 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions each year, equivalent to removing 4.8 million cars from the road. EGA was the first company globally to produce aluminium using solar power, with 80 thousand tonnes of CelestiAL made in 2024. EGA also produces recycled aluminium, marketed under the product brand RevivAL, at its plants in the United States and Germany. In the UAE, EGA is building the UAE's largest aluminium recycling plant at Al Taweelah. The facility is expected to start production in the first half of 2026.

Since transitioning joint operations from Wuhan to Ezhou in August 2023, Etihad Airways is the first international airline to launch scheduled commercial freighter services in the region. Building on this milestone, Etihad Cargo expanded its presence at Ezhou Huahu Airport and announced a second weekly frequency in November 2023, followed by a third in July 2024, reflecting growing demand and operational momentum. Since August 2023, Etihad Cargo has operated two commercial freighter flights per week, one with Etihad Airways and the other with SF Airlines. From October 2023, the frequency increased to four flights per week, with two operated by Etihad Airways and the other two by SF Airlines. By July 2024, commercial freighter services had expanded further to five flights per week, with two operated by Etihad Airways and three by SF Airlines. Over the past two years, Etihad Cargo has operated 184 Boeing 777 freighter flights through Ezhou Huahu Airport in close cooperation with SF Airlines' over 200 flights with Boeing 747 freighters. The addition of a sixth weekly scheduled flight in July 2024, followed by a seventh in 2025, has further strengthened Etihad Cargo's network, improving connectivity and providing customers with faster and more efficient access to key global markets. In addition to scheduled services, charter freighter operations have also grown steadily. Etihad Cargo operated one charter freighter flight per week throughout 2024. From January to June 2025, the number of charter flights increased to three per week, supporting flexible and on-demand logistics solutions. Ezhou Huahu Airport began operations in 2022. The airport is Asia's first dedicated freighter hub and has been instrumental in enabling Etihad Cargo to deliver consistent and reliable service. Since 2023, more than 43,000 tonnes of export cargo and over 690 tonnes of import cargo have moved through Abu Dhabi via Ezhou Huahu Airport, reinforcing the hub's critical role in global logistics. Located in Hubei Province, the airport offers unrivalled domestic reach and growing international connectivity with 135 aircraft stands, dual 3,600-metre runways. 'This milestone reflects the operational success and strategic value of our collaboration with Ezhou Huahu Airport and SF Airlines,' said Stanislas Brun, Chief Cargo Officer at Etihad Airways. 'Ezhou's role as Asia's first dedicated freighter hub has allowed us to unlock new levels of efficiency and reach, particularly for time-sensitive e-commerce and high-tech shipments, supporting growing demand for cross-border e-commerce and high-tech shipments between China and the Middle East. The expansion to seven weekly freighter services strengthens our ability to offer reliable, time-sensitive logistics solutions across key global trade lanes.' Luo Guowei, Chairman of Hubei International Logistics Airport Co., Ltd., stated: "As the first international airlines to operate at Ezhou Airport, Etihad Airways has transported over 28,000 tons of cargo since launching the Abu Dhabi - Ezhou route. This has established an efficient two-way trade corridor spanning Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, injecting strong momentum into regional economic and trade exchanges. At this new starting point, Ezhou Airport will deepen strategic collaboration with Etihad Airways and SF Airlines. We will further increase route frequency, enhance cooperation on overseas warehouses, and jointly build efficient logistics channels connecting the world to China. This will forge new milestones in establishing an aviation trade hub for the Belt and Road Initiative." As Etihad Cargo continues to expand its global footprint, the relationship with Ezhou Huahu Airport remains a cornerstone of its Asia strategy, driving innovation, efficiency and mutual growth. The hub's advanced infrastructure, streamlined customs processes and proximity to key manufacturing centres have enabled Etihad Cargo to meet the rising demand for high-tech, automotive and e-commerce shipments. Looking ahead, Etihad Cargo will continue its presence at EHU, exploring opportunities for service enhancements and digital integration to further optimise end-to-end supply chain performance.
