Sydney Sweeney Jeans Co. Breaks Silence on ‘Woke' Backlash
American Eagle wrote in a brief statement to Instagram on Friday, ''Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.' In other words, not about 'genes.'
'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,' the company added, concluding with the inclusive message, 'Great jeans look good on everyone.'
Sweeney's ads with the company, which play on the words 'genes' and 'jeans' to celebrate her both looks and the pants, had been criticized for promoting eugenics, with some social media users going so far as to liken the campaign's messaging to 'Nazi propaganda.'
Sweeney tells viewers in one ad, 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.'
At a time when the Trump administration has begun dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the public and private sectors, the ads struck some as a nod toward alt-right conservatism. Meanwhile, on the right, internet comments from random people have become a fixation in the news cycle—worthy of attention from Trump's White House officials who have claimed 'Democrats' are behind the supposed 'woke' outrage.
No Democratic lawmakers have mentioned Sweeney's ads publicly. But that hasn't stopped Fox News from running so many segments on the supposed outrage this week that CNN was able to create an extended montage on Abby Phillip's NewsNight program.
Per CNN's Brian Stelter on X Friday, 'right-wing media outlets' have taken the opportunity to 'hype a left-wing 'meltdown' that isn't happening' to distract from revelations about Donald Trump's friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. A search for how many times Sweeney's jeans story and Epstein's stories were discussed on cable news this week revealed that between Monday and Thursday night, Fox News mentioned Sweeney '181 times' and only '18 times for Jeffrey Epstein.'
The White House has egged on that conversation, with Vice President JD Vance telling the Ruthless podcast Friday, 'My political advice to the Democrats is, continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi.'
Trump's communicators director Steven Cheung insisted that private citizens' critiques of the ads are 'Cancel culture run amok. This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They're tired of this bulls--t.' And Ted Cruz took the opportunity to let everyone know how hot he thinks Sweeney is.

'Airline attendant forcibly opens bathroom door on passenger," he wrote across the screen of his video. Speaking in the clip, the flight attendant told Nguyen that it is a "hazard" to smoke while on board the aircraft. In response, Nguyen accused the woman of trying to open the lavatory door while he was in there. 'I was actually sitting on the toilet and you were opening the door,' he said before apologizing. 'You can keep saying you're sorry, but I care about all these passengers," the woman replied, pointing to everyone else in the cabin. While Nguyen told the woman that he understood, things escalated when she noted that he was "recording." The flight attendant then appeared to try and grab his phone with Nguyen stating, 'You're not allowed to do that.' 'A customer on American Airlines flight 2860 with service from Phoenix (PHX) to San Francisco (SFO) was removed from the aircraft upon arrival at SFO due to disruptive behavior,' the release read. 'We thank our customers for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience.' Nguyen, for his part, reiterated his original claims, telling PEOPLE that while in the "aircraft lavatory, a flight attendant forcibly unlocked and opened the door twice," after he "had clearly requested more time." While Nguyen admits to taking "one puff" of his vape while in the bathroom, he says the situation has been "deeply distressing — emotionally, professionally and financially." Rich Eisen doesn't like the Broncos' non-throwback uniforms
Well, you can't please everyone! Prior to the 2024 season, the Denver Broncos debuted an entirely new uniform collection the franchise nicknamed the "Mile High Collection." The new orange (Sunset Orange), blue (Midnight Navy) and white (Summit White) jerseys drew mixed reviews when they were first unveiled, but there were some good-looking games throughout the season. However, there are some lingering critics. "Here's my one piece of advice, and a step back," said Rich Eisen in a segment discussing the aftermath of the Broncos' 31-7 playoff loss at the hands of the Buffalo Bills. "The uniforms," questioned a cohost. "Yes," said Eisen. "Oh my goodness, I hated those," chimed another cohost. "They clinch in their throwbacks, and then they show up in Buffalo like that," asked Eisen. "What the hell was that?" In the playoff matchup, the Broncos wore their new matte navy helmet, Summit White jersey top, Sunset Orange pants and socks. Throughout the season, the players picked the pants and socks they would wear each week. There is some good news, however!
