August 20 - Kyle Schwarber doubled, homered and had five RBIs, giving him an MLB-leading 109 this season, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep. Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo (12-6) allowed one run on three hits over six innings. The left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out 12. The National League East-leading Phillies, who won for the fifth time in their past six games, got big contributions from the top and bottom of their batting order. Leadoff hitter Trea Turner went 5-for-6 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs to spark a 20-hit attack. Schwarber, who bats second, and No. 8 and 9 hitters Max Kepler and Bryson Stott each went 3-for-5, with Kepler hitting a home run and Stott adding a double and two RBIs. Julio Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez hit solo shots for the Mariners, who went 2-7 on their nine-game trip. Suarez's leadoff homer to left field off reliever David Robertson in the top of the seventh pulled Seattle within 3-2. The Phillies pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the frame, then added three more in the eighth. Mariners reliever Tayler Saucedo walked Brandon Marsh and hit Harrison Bader with a pitch in the seventh. With one out, Stott grounded a run-scoring single to left, sending Bader to third. Stott stole second and Turner drove in a run with an infield single. After Turner stole second, Schwarber grounded a two-run single to right and took second on a throwing error by outfielder Luke Raley. Bryce Harper grounded an RBI single to left to make it 8-2. Turner drove in a run in the eighth with an infield single and Schwarber followed with a two-run shot to right. It was Schwarber's 45th homer of the season, two behind Seattle's Cal Raleigh for the MLB lead. Mariners starter Luis Castillo (8-7) gave up three runs on 10 hits over four innings. The right-hander walked two and fanned two. After Rodriguez went deep in the top of the first, the Phillies tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the inning as Turner tripled and Schwarber hit a sacrifice fly. Philadelphia took the lead in the second as Bader led off with an infield single and reached second on third baseman Suarez's throwing error. With one out, Stott hit an RBI double. Man charged with killing an 'American Idol' exec and husband will undergo mental evaluation
A man charged with fatally shooting an 'American Idol' music supervisor and her husband in their Los Angeles home will undergo mental evaluation to determine whether he's fit to stand trial, a judge ruled Wednesday. Raymond Boodarian, 22, was set to be arraigned in a courthouse in Los Angeles but did not enter a plea. A judge suspended the criminal proceedings against him while a psychiatrist examines him to determine his competency. He's charged with two counts of murder in the killing of longtime 'American Idol' producer Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca, both 70, who were shot when they came home unexpectedly during a burglary on July 10. A judge at a court that specializes in mental health will consider the evaluation and decide whether Boodarian will proceed toward trial or be placed in a state hospital. Boodarian stood behind a window in a custody area of the courtroom, and appeared to try to remain out of sight. His attorney declined comment, and the district attorney's office had no immediate comment. Boodarian will undergo the same evaluation in the same small courthouse on Hollywood Boulevard where a man charged with stalking Jennifer Aniston and driving into the front gate of her home was recently found to be not competent to go to trial. Police said they responded to a 911 call about a burglary at the home of Kaye and Deluca in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Police said they found no sign of forced entry or other trouble and left. Four days later the couple's bodies were found, shot to death, when officers carried out a welfare check at the home. Boodarian was arrested the following day. District Attorney Nathan Hochman later said in a community meeting that investigators believe the couple arrived home unexpectedly while Boodarian was burglarizing it. He shot them with their own gun and later called 911 himself, Hochman said. Kaye had been with 'American Idol' for more than 15 years and was working on the upcoming season of the hit singing competition TV series at the time of her death. She had also worked in the music departments of several other productions, including 'The Singing Bee,' 'Hollywood Game Night,' 'Lip Sync Battle,' and several Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.

Tigers score early, go on to sweep series from Astros
August 20 - Dillon Dingler had an RBI triple during a six-run first and the host Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 7-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Dingler also doubled while scoring two runs for the American League Central Division leaders. Javier Baez contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Spencer Torkelson added an RBI double. Winning pitcher Charlie Morton (9-10) allowed two runs, three hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings. Brenan Hanifee, Tyler Holton and Rafael Montero combined for three innings of scoreless relief. Detroit has won nine of its last 11 games. Mauricio Dubon's two-run homer ended Houston's 31-inning scoreless drought. The Astros were shut out in four of their previous five games. Houston starter Framber Valdez (11-7) was charged with all seven Detroit runs. He gave up seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in five innings. Houston center fielder Taylor Trammell left the game in the first inning after crashing into the wall. Valdez got into trouble in the first by walking Jahmai Jones and Gleyber Torres.
