IPL 2025 Suspended As India-Pakistan Tensions Hit World's Biggest Cricket League
The Indian Premier League—the world's biggest and most valuable cricket league—has been suspended for at least a week, officials announced on Friday, due to security concerns triggered by ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, as both sides accuse each other of attempting a series of drone attacks on each other's territory.

In an official statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision to 'suspend the remainder of the ongoing…IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week.'
The BCCI said the IPL's governing council made the call after consulting with the league's franchises, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players.'
On Thursday, a league game being played in the north Indian mountain resort town of Dharamshala was called off abruptly after only an hour of play, as India accused Pakistan of launching aerial drone and artillery attacks near the border regions.
Before its suspension, the league was approaching its final phase, with the Playoffs and the subsequent final scheduled to take place in two weeks.
If the league's suspension lasts longer than a week, the cricket board could be forced to postpone the remaining games to later in the year due to the packed international cricket calendar.

Pakistan players have not been allowed to participate in the Indian Premier League since its second season in 2009—after the previous year's terrorist attacks on Mumbai. The Pakistan Cricket Board, therefore, runs its own Pakistan Super League, which ran parallel with the IPL this year. The PSL has also been disrupted by the tensions. The league's officials were forced to relocate one game after the cricket stadium in Rawalpindi was allegedly struck by an Indian drone. On Friday, however, league officials announced plans to move the remainder of the PSL games to the UAE for security reasons.

Indian police arrest four people for cricket fans stampede
(Reuters) -Police in India's tech capital of Bengaluru have arrested four people, including an official of a top cricket franchise, in connection with a stampede during a trophy celebration that killed 11 people and injured 47, media reported. Four people, three from an event management company and one official from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket team, whose victory in the Indian Premier League this week led to fan frenzy, were arrested early on Friday morning, media said. Spokespersons for the team did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. On Wednesday, Bengaluru were celebrating their win the previous day over Punjab Kings in the final of the IPL's 18th edition, the world's richest T20 cricket league. The team had given away free passes for the celebration at a stadium in the city but said that numbers would be limited. Thousands of people gathered outside the stadium, and fans without passes tried push through the gates, leading to a stampede. The franchise said later the incident was "unfortunate" and pledged one million Indian rupees to each family of the 11 fans who died on Wednesday. Stampedes occur frequently in India, mainly at religious events, but it was the first time in 45 years that fans had died in a crush at a sporting event, media said. India's head cricket coach Gautam Gambhir said on Thursday he did not support such roadshows and celebrations. "Celebration is important. But more important than that is the life of any person. So, if we are not prepared or if we can't handle the crowd in that way, then we might as well not have these roadshows," Gambhir told reporters.

Rob Walter hired as New Zealand's cricket head coach after leaving South Africa job
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Rob Walter has been hired to coach the New Zealand men's cricket team in all three formats as a replacement for Gary Stead. Walter coached South Africa's teams in the one-day and Twenty20 formats from January 2023 until April this year. Before then he coached New Zealand's Otago province for five years and at the Central Districts association. He guided South Africa to the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup and the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the ODI format and to the final of the T20 World Cup last year. Stead was New Zealand head coach in all three formats from 2018 until earlier this week, when New Zealand Cricket announced it was seeking a replacement. Stead announced in March he was stepping down from his roles in the limited-overs formats but intended to remain as test coach. New Zealand Cricket said it preferred a coach to lead the Black Caps in all three formats. 'It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series will be contested,' Walter said. 'I just can't wait to get started. It's exciting, it's challenging and the opportunity is enormous.' The 49-year-old Walter was high on New Zealand Cricket's list of preferred candidates from the moment it decided to pursue another all-formats coach, ruling out Stead who guided the Black Caps to the inaugural World Test Championship. 'Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree,' NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said. 'His success in New Zealand's domestic game combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps.' He'll take over in time for New Zealand's tour to Zimbabwe, which starts with a T20 tri-series against the hosts and South Africa before a two-test series against Zimbabwe. ___ AP cricket:
