Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benítez has joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven.
The 32-year-old, who has served as Argentina's backup goalkeeper throughout their World Cup qualification campaign, will officially join the Eagles on July 1st.

Palace had been in discussions with Benítez for several months, but he opted to wait until the conclusion of the Eredivisie season – out of respect for PSV, who were in a title race with Ajax – before committing to the south Londoners.
Benítez has been recruited as an understudy to FA Cup winner Dean Henderson. However, the keeper is convinced he can unseat Henderson from the No. 1 spot as he aims to retain his place in the Argentina squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
During three seasons at PSV, Benítez made 134 appearances, winning consecutive Eredivisie titles in 2024 and 2025, the KNVB Cup in 2023, and two Johan Cruyff Shields in 2022 and 2023. He kept 43 clean sheets in all competitions during his time in Eindhoven and featured 27 times in the UEFA Champions League.

And Benítez is expected to play a key role in the club's continental campaign, bringing valuable European experience to the squad.

His arrival marks renewed competition in the goalkeeping department. Last season, Dean Henderson played every minute of Crystal Palace's Premier League campaign – the first time a goalkeeper has done so since the club's promotion in 2013.
Palace Chairman Steve Parish said: 'Walter is an excellent addition to our squad, bringing further quality, experience and competition to our goalkeeping department alongside Dean and Remi.
'We look forward to welcoming Walter to South London next month as we continue our preparations towards what promises to be a busy season, competing on multiple fronts, in 2025/26.'

Chelsea finding it ‘impossible' to train in sweltering heat before crucial FIFA Club World Cup clash

The heat can be unbearable and Chelsea is learning the hard way in Philadelphia for the FIFA Club World Cup. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca told reporters that the club is having issues training in the heat at the moment. 'It's almost impossible to train, or to make a session because of the weather now,' Maresca said. However, training on Monday proved difficult for the team, as they had to contend with the onset of the heatwave. Advertisement Temperatures in Philly hit a high of 98 degress and felt like 104, according to The Weather Channel. In Subaru Park in Philadelphia, Chelsea attempted to utilize large industrial fans on the sidelines and employ cooling sprays to combat the heat. Even then, the session did not last too long. 'We are trying just to save energy for the game. This morning's session was very very very short.' Maresca said. 3 Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Noni Maduke stand behind cooling sprays. REUTERS Advertisement Unfortunately for Chelsea, if there were one game they needed extra practice for, it would be this one. After a shocking 3-1 loss to Flamengo, their chances to advance out of Group D are less than many would have thought entering the tournament. Their game against Esperance de Tunis will see the winner advance to the quarterfinals. If it is a draw, Chelsea would advance. Chelsea is not the only team that has aired their concerns over the conditions. Advertisement 3 Chelsea players training in Subaru Park in Philadelphia. REUTERS Even in the first week of the tournament, both Paris Saint-Germain and Athletic Madrid acknowledged that the heat played a factor in their match's outcome on Sunday. 'The match was clearly influenced by the temperature,' said PSG manager Luis Enrique. In Dortmund's game against Mamelodi Sundowns, the substitutes for Dortmund watched the first half from their locker room to stay cool — something unheard of in normal conditions. This tournament is a precursor to the 2026 World Cup, which the US will host at around the same time. Many are asking FIFA what they have been doing to mitigate these issues. Other than breaks during the 30th and 70th minutes of each match, FIFA told The Athletic that their medical experts 'have been in regular contact with the clubs to address heat management and acclimatization'.

NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler And NY Jets Owner Woody Johnson Part Of Separate Groups Bidding For Ownership Stake In Soccer Club Crystal Palace

There is a line in the hit song "Money" by Pink Floyd that says, "New car, caviar, four four-star daydream, think I'll buy me a football team." New York Jets Owner Woody Johnson can certainly relate, but it appears that one football club is not enough for him. is reporting that a group including Johnson has launched a bid to purchase English Premier League soccer team Crystal Palace. If the bid is successful, Johnson would join a growing group of American businessmen who own stakes in soccer clubs in England's top league. The licensing and merchandising rights deals for English soccer are worth billions of dollars per year, and numbers like that always attract American investors. That explains why Johnson isn't alone in the bidding. He's competing against another group that includes NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler. Learn how you can Crystal Palace is a study in contrast. The club just won the prestigious FA Cup, which earned them a spot in the Europa League, a continental cup competition that pits many of Europe's top clubs against each other. The FA Cup is the first major trophy in the club's history. However, every rose has its thorns, and Crystal Palace is finding that out right now. Europe's soccer regulators have strict requirements, and one of them prevents teams with the same owners from competing in the same competition. One of Crystal Palace's owners, John Textor, owns shares in French Ligue 1 club Lyon, which has also qualified for Europa League play. The only way around this rule is for the owner to place their shares of one of their two teams in a blind trust. Textor had until March 1 to complete that transition, but he didn't, meaning Crystal Palace can't compete in Europe. However, he's offered to sell his entire stake in Crystal Palace to keep the team eligible. This is where the competing bids from Johnson and Butler's groups come into play. It's easy to understand why there is so much interest in Crystal Palace. Trending: Invest early in CancerVax's breakthrough tech aiming to disrupt a $231B market. First, Crystal Palace's London location creates lucrative licensing and sponsorship opportunities. Second, the club's soccer academy is very well respected. The academy keeps the club stocked with a solid talent base and helps Crystal Palace remain competitive. It also helps the club generate an additional revenue stream through player transfers. European soccer clubs typically move players between teams for financial considerations, instead of player trades, which are more common in America's sports leagues. Transfer fees for top players like Crystal Palace's Eberiche Eze can exceed $100 million. Last year, Crystal Palace sold home-grown Michael Olise to Bayern Munich for nearly $60 million. That's why heavyweights like Johnson are interested. The current uncertainty has left Crystal Palace fans anxiously awaiting a resolution. Competing in Europe would be a historic achievement for the club, but that's impossible until the current ownership issue is resolved. This is why all parties involved are moving as quickly as possible to achieve a resolution that allows Crystal Palace to play one of soccer's grand stages.
