3 elephant tusks recovered from house at Tripura's Unakoti, suspect absconding
Ali, aged between 35 and 40 years old, was known to be an electrician. The police said he escaped from the house before they arrived. 'A case was lodged against him. We will soon arrest him', said a police officer, adding that they are investigating to find more details about the tusks. The tusks are currently in police custody for investigation.
In January this year, the police lodged a case after the carcass of an elephant with a few body parts missing was recovered from the Pramodenagar area under the Kalyanpur Forest Division, falling under the Teliamura sub-division in Khowai district of Tripura.
According to a report by the state forest department from a few years ago, Tripura has 102 elephants, including 42 wild elephants and 60 in captivity. A new elephant survey was undertaken in March 2022, but the reports could not be finalised since a Covid lockdown was imposed soon after.
Tripura villages have seen frequent elephant-human conflicts. As part of setting up natural defence mechanisms for villagers, the state government started a project to keep bees in agricultural fields to thwart elephant attacks, as jumbos are known to fear stingy insects.
The government initiated projects to cultivate elephant fodder in the jungles, including the planting of bamboo and bananas, the establishment of watering holes, and the construction of other infrastructure as part of the check dams built in the forests.

Days after his release, Sambhal mosque panel chief booked for ‘celebratory rally'
A CASE was registered on Wednesday against the chairman of the Shahi Jama Masjid Management Committee, Zafar Ali, and around 60 others for allegedly taking out a celebratory procession in Sambhal following his release from jail, police said on Wednesday. The move comes days after Ali was released after spending four months and 13 days at the Moradabad jail. He was earlier arrested after the police accused him of playing a role in inciting the violence in Sambhal in November last year. Four civilians were killed in firing as the police confronted the protesters and 29 police personnel were also injured. The violence erupted during a court-mandated survey of the Mughal-era mosque in Sambhal town. Ali is also the main lawyer representing the Shahi Jama Mosque committee. A day after the violence, Ali had alleged during a press conference on November 25 last year that the deaths happened as a result of police firing. Ali was released on bail around 9:30 am on August 1 and as soon as he came out, a group of around 60 supporters were waiting for him to celebrate his release. A video of the purported celebration surfaced on social media. According to the police, the case was filed at Sambhal Kotwali police station on the basis of a complaint by a sub-inspector, Ashish Tomar. 'As per information provided by Tomar, we learnt that around 9:30 am on Friday, Zafar Ali, three advocates, Sarfaraz, Tahir, Haider, along with 50-60 unidentified supporters, allegedly violated the prohibitory orders given by the public servant concerned. The Additional Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, Alok Kumar, said an FIR was registered against Zafar Ali and around 60 unidentified individuals under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). 'An investigation is underway,' he said. 'They organised a 40-km-long roadshow from Moradabad to Sambhal on August 1 to mark Ali's release,' said Kumar. Lok Nayak Hospital ex-director booked by CBI for irregularities
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against Dr Suresh Kumar, former medical director of Delhi government-run Lok Nayak Hospital (LNH), and others for alleged criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and misconduct by a public servant, officials said on Monday. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in a 2017 open tender floated by LNH on the Delhi government's procurement portal for sanitation consumables and non-consumables. (File photo) The FIR, filed on July 30, comes three years after a preliminary enquiry (PE) was initiated by the CBI in 2022 following reports of administrative lapses during Dr Kumar's tenure. According to officials, the PE has now led to the registration of a regular case (RC) after prima facie evidence was found. 'Prima facie offences under IPC Section 120-B read with Section 409 and Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act have been disclosed against Dr Suresh Kumar and other former staff,' the FIR stated. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in a 2017 open tender floated by LNH on the Delhi government's procurement portal for sanitation consumables and non-consumables, including macerators — machines used for hygienically disposing of human waste. The FIR alleges that only one firm was favoured repeatedly over an extended period, from the original contract period in 2017 until 2021, leading to 'undue benefits' to the firm and corresponding losses to the government. Eight macerators of 'inferior quality' were allegedly purchased at inflated prices, despite better-quality alternatives being available at lower costs. 'No fresh open tender was floated during the extended period,' the FIR adds, 'and extensions were granted to the same firm without justification -- from January 29, 2020, to July 13, 2021.' It also notes that the Covid-19 pandemic, often cited for emergency procurement, only began affecting India in mid-March 2020 -- two months after the original tender expired. The PE further flagged violations in medicine procurement norms. Under government policy, generic medicines -- which are more affordable and equally effective -- are to be prioritised over branded drugs. However, the FIR alleges that between April 7 and September 16, 2022, LNH procured medicines worth ₹32.23 crore from a local authorised chemist, of which ₹25.17 crore (approximately 80%) was spent on branded drugs, and only ₹7.05 crore on generic ones. 'This resulted in avoidable expenditure and reduced access to essential medicines for the public,' the FIR states. CBI officials said CCTV footage, procurement records, and other evidence are being examined to identify the officials involved in the decision-making process. So far, no arrest has been made in the case. Dr Kumar has not responded to messages and calls requesting comment on the matter till the time of going to print.

FIR against Sambhal Jama Masjid prez over ‘celebratory procession'
Bareilly: An FIR has been registered against Shahi Jama Masjid managing committee president Zafar Ali and 64 others for allegedly organising a 'celebratory procession' in Sambhal after Ali's release from Moradabad jail on Aug 1, police said on Wednesday. Sambhal SP Krishan Kumar Bishnoi said, "An FIR has been lodged against Zafar and his associates for conducting the procession without permission. A probe is on." According to a complaint by Satyavrat outpost in-charge Ashish Tomar, Ali and his supporters held a roadshow from Moradabad to Sambhal on Tuesday. Following this, the group was charged on Tuesday evening. Tomar, in his complaint, said, "After being released on bail from Moradabad district jail, the accused, Zafar Ali, arrived in Sambhal district. Around 50 to 60 supporters welcomed him with garlands, a procession, slogans, and fireworks. Sambhal is currently a very sensitive area. Keeping this in view, Ali has violated BNSS section 163 (power to issue orders to prevent potential public nuisance, danger to life, health, or safety or disturbances of public tranquillity) enforced by the DM from July 1, 2025, to Aug 31, 2025. He was arrested in March and granted bail by the Allahabad high court in July. The court noted his name wasn't mentioned in the initial FIR filed after the incident. The Nov 24 violence during the ASI survey left five dead and left several people, including 19 police personnel, injured. Protesters clashed with police, set vehicles on fire, and pelted stones. The SIT later filed a 4,000-page chargesheet in six of 12 related cases.
