Comedy in three acts brings hawkers' upselling skills to stage

1 2 Pune: French writer-director Zazie Hayoun speaks of hawkers as if they are born performers. "When I was a little girl in Le Marais,a neighbourhood in Paris, the hawkers in the market were like actors. Their street calls were so melodious. They had a unique talent, they could upsell anything, and they were so jolly all the time. For me, they were artists," said Hayoun. Her fascination with hawkers found its fullest expression in "Songs of Hawkers," a 60-minute English comedy that arrives in the city for a one-night performance on Wednesday, Aug 21, at IISER Pune. Presented by Alliance Française de Pune in collaboration with Alliance Française de Dhaka, the play uses music, puppetry, clowning, dance, and Grand Guignol tradition to reimagine the lives of street vendors. Hayoun said, "I created the performance in Bangladesh, where Alliance Française gave me the facility to audition and work with actors. Earlier this week, we performed at the National School of Drama in Delhi, for an audience that ranged between 4-99 years old, and everybody thought it was an Indian production. The two countries (Bangladesh and India) are so related, with so much appreciation for Bollywood music." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune | Gold Rates Today in Pune | Silver Rates Today in Pune The play unfolds across three acts: The Secret, The Thief Rewarded, and The Competition. "The script is in broken English, Bengali, and Hindi. It is for everybody; children especially love the visual treat with all the dancing, acrobatics, clowning, and Bollywood music," she said. For Hayoun, who first came to India in 1983, the work is also indicative of her personal relationship with the country she calls her second home. "I wanted to learn everything about the country, its art, dance, theatre, and music. Thirty years on and off, I have been coming back. I had the idea long ago to make a performance with hawkers, showing how joyfully they carry out their business day in and day out. They are survivors, they make good money from small jobs, and I admire their 'jugaad'. They're always exactly where we need them," she said. The process took a year with auditions, workshops, improvisations, and recordings of real hawkers' voices for the show. "I wrote three stories, auditioned actors in Dhaka. Then I went back to Paris to develop the script and returned after a couple of months to get the show together. We kept the same set of actors. I am already thinking of making another performance with them," said Hayoun. After its staging in the city, the production will travel back to Bangladesh for shows in Dhaka and Chittagong, before heading to Paris next year. "After our Delhi show, a man from the audience asked me how I know so much about Indian culture," she recalled. "It is the same, I said. Bangladesh, India, and France, we connect through theatre," said Hayoun. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Austrian poet Ernst Jandl's experimental poetry comes alive in multisensory exhibition

1 2 Pune: In honour of Ernst Jandl, Austria's master of experimental poetry, on his birth centenary, an exhibition in the city will represent his verses through art installations, mixed media presentations and experiential sets. Jandl's poems were always meant to go beyond reading and felt in a tangible sense, touched, seen and even spun around. Students of Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan and the German department of SPPU are doing just that at The Box in Erandwane. Jandl passed away in 2000. He is remembered as one of the greatest avant garde writers of the 20th century and known for dismantling language to reveal its bones, bending sound till it becomes music and turning nonsense into critique. Jandl is known internationally for his concrete poetry, visual poetry and sound poetry. He took the guttural German language and made it wobble, crack, sing and sometimes even shriek. His work continues to resonate across borders because it's about sounds that represent memories, historical events, war and even peace. The result is 24 installations which make the space feel like a playground for the avant garde. The show was inaugurated in the city on Monday evening amid pouring rain. Director of the literature archive in Vienna Bernhard Fetz shared an interesting connection of the author with India. "In 1965, at a performance called Wholly Communion, poets from all over the world gathered. Allen Ginsberg was there. The late Indira Gandhi sat among the audience. Jandl, an Austrian school teacher, was in a suit amongst hippies and beatniks. And, yet, he became one of the stars of the evening through his performance. He showed that avant-garde literature can overcome language and cultural barriers," said Fetz. The exhibition makes the same point. One installation revisits Jandl's stark anti-war piece from the mid-1990s where the word 'war' is printed relentlessly across months of a vertical calendar of 1994, until 'May' appears in 1995 — both the month and the promise of renewal after the war. Displayed on giant red banners, the work presses audiences into the exhaustion of repetition before offering sudden, spring-like relief. Nearby, a giant yellow ball, printed with the simple poem 'Die Sonne Scheint' (translating to the sun is shining), can be spun by visitors. Each turn echoes Jandl's insistence on persistence as the sun rises, sets and rises again in German, English and Marathi. Just as words revolve, lives endure and history repeats. Visibly delighted by the installations, Fetz said, "Jandl wanted to show that even a poor, downgraded language can be poetic. He wrote love poems in the language of immigrants and in the grammar of outsiders. It was a new poetic expression — born from social critique, as much as linguistic play." Fetz said, "Jandl became famous with his sound poems and as a brilliant performance artist because he made people laugh, think and even riot. His words still resonate." The balance of wit and seriousness threads through the show. The exhibition offers not just a glimpse of Austrian literary history, but an invitation to interact with, watch and listen to and rediscover poetry as performance. The exhibition is free and open till Aug 22. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
