Handre Pollard back to steady shaky Bok ship

Handre Pollard back to steady shaky Bok ship

The Herald8 hours ago
Experienced playmaker Handre Pollard has been recalled to steady the ship after the Springboks were on the receiving end of a savage beating at the hands of the Wallabies in Johannesburg last week.
Pollard takes the place of Manie Libbok for a crunch Rugby Championship rematch between the sides in Cape Town on Saturday (kickoff 5.10pm).
Frustrated Bok coach Rassie Erasmus, who roasted SA's performance after they blew a 22-0 lead at Ellis Park, has rung the changes in a bid to get his team back on the winning track.
Powerful centre Jesse Kriel will take over the captain's armband from injured Siya Kolisi when the Boks bid to keep their hopes of Rugby Championship glory alive.
SA will also be missing Pieter-Steph du Toit (concussion), Kurt-Lee Arendse (knee injury) and Edwill van der Merwe (ankle injury) for their second game.
Erasmus named a team featuring 10 changes including returns for Cheslin Kolbe, Damian de Allende and Bok centurion Willie le Roux.
Powerful prop Ox Nche will serve as Kriel's vice-captain for the first time in his international career, which dates back to 2018 when he made his Springbok debut against Wales in Washington DC.
Only five players in the starting line-up retained their places from the team's 38-22 defeat against the Wallabies at Ellis Park.
The only change to the front row was the inclusion of prop Thomas du Toit, who will pack down alongside Nche and Malcolm Marx.
The experienced duo of Kriel and De Allende reunite in the midfield for the 38th time, while Grant Williams and Pollard will pair up at halfback.
Erasmus said the changes were made because of injuries and strategic adjustments.
'We lost four players to injury last weekend, which obviously had an impact on a few of our selections,' he said.
'But we also know where we went wrong against Australia last week, so we made a few changes that we believe will offer us what we need for this game.
'Damian and Cheslin have also recovered from their injuries, and with their experience and knowledge of the Wallabies, it was a logical choice to recall them.
'We are determined to get things right this week.
'Prop Boan Venter got a taste of what it's like to face Australia last week, and Ruan Nortje did well against them last year.
'It will be good for a few other guys to experience playing against one of the top teams in the world, especially as we continue to build our squad depth.
'We are pleased with this squad, and we are all aligned on what we have to do to lift our standards this week.'
Erasmus said he expected another physical battle against the Wallabies, who will have momentum on their side.
'There's no doubt they'll take a lot of confidence from their victory last week, and especially since that marked their first victory at Ellis Park against us in the professional era,' he said.
'We are still hurting from that result, and the coaches and players are extremely disappointed with the way we played last week.
'The Boks know we didn't play according to our standards in the second half, and we must rectify that.
'We let ourselves and the country down, so we have all the motivation we need to make things right this week.'
Springbok team: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Canan Moodie, 13 Jesse Kriel (capt), 1 2 Damian de Allende, 11 Cheslin Kolbe, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Jean-Luc du Preez, 7 Franco Mostert, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Ruan Nortje, 4 RG Snyman, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche. Springboks to take on Japan at Wembley in November

The Springboks will play against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London at the beginning of November to mark the start of the end of year programme. The Test will be the first rugby event to be held at the famous north London venue since 2016 when the Springboks and the Barbarians played out a thrilling 31-31 draw. The Boks are no strangers to rugby in London, where their matches are normally played at Twickenham. 'We are delighted to be starting our tour of the northern hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium,' said Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus. 'Especially ahead of a challenging Castle Lager Outgoing Tour which kicks off a week later with the first official Test of the November window against France in Paris. London, are you ready? The #Springboks are playing Japan at @wembleystadium in November - more here: 🇬🇧 #ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) August 20, 2025 'The last time the Boks played at Wembley was in 2016 against the Barbarians, in a tense affair which went down to the wire in a 31-31 drawn match. The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby, which has been prevalent in our encounters before and during the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019. 'We have had fantastic support from our fans in the UK for our fixtures in London over the past few years and I am sure the match will be no different, especially at one of the most famous sporting venues in the world.' Japan coach Eddie Jones, who won the RWC in 2007 as a technical adviser to the Springboks, is relishing the prospect of another clash with the world champions. 'The game in Brighton 10 years ago changed rugby in Japan from being a minor sport to a boom sport,' said Jones. 'Playing against the Boks is the dream of every young Japanese player.' Wembley Stadium has hosted 11 rugby matches over the years, starting with England's 26-13 win over Canada in 1992. Before taking on the Japanese, the Boks will face Argentina in the final round of the Rugby Championship at Allianz Stadium (Twickenham) on October 4 where they are expecting strong support.

Jean-Luc du Preez given another Springbok opportunity

Jasper Wiese's suspension and Siya Kolisi's injury have seen Jean-Luc du Preez brought in from the cold again. You could argue from having a sure, go-to No 1 they are now in a looping figure-of-eight configuration in their choices at the back of the scrum. Du Preez will run out for just the fourth time in the Springbok starting team when they face the resurgent Wallabies in Cape Town on Saturday. The 31-year-old has earned 14 caps since making his debut as a substitute against Wales in 2016, 11 off the bench. Of his three starts, two were on the flank — the most recent against England in 2018. His only start at No 8 came in the 35-12 victory over France at Ellis Park in 2017, predating the Erasmus era. Du Preez's most recent Test appearance for the Boks was against Argentina on the eve of the Rugby World Cup, from which he was omitted. Clearly he is a player in the Boks' outer orbit — but Erasmus is throwing a life line.
