How DoorDash is evolving its retail media arm as ad revenue grows
Delivery giant DoorDash last week announced the first acquisition to strengthen its advertising division with a $175 million deal for the ad-tech startup Symbiosys. Uniting the two companies, which have worked together for the better part of two years, highlights the growing importance of offsite ads for retail media networks that are reaching fresh levels of maturity and grappling more with limited on-platform inventory.
Symbiosys assists brands in cracking into channels like search, social and display while helping retail media networks broaden their scope. It has largely focused on CPG companies, but DoorDash challenged the firm to apply the same approach to the small- and mid-sized restaurant brands that make up a large chunk of DoorDash Ads' business, which last year surpassed an annual revenue run rate of $1 billion (and includes Wolt Ads, part of its purchase of Finnish food delivery platform Wolt in 2022). DoorDash and Symbiosys have been building out restaurant offsite ads over the past eight months and are in the process of rolling those tools out as an extension of onsite product advertising, according to executives.
Beyond addressing inventory challenges, the offsite frontier is a key piece of retail media networks' attempts to develop full-funnel advertising that extends beyond workhorse formats like sponsored search and product listings that can be difficult to differentiate. While retail media ad spending has soared at the category level, advertisers have become more vocal in demanding richer capabilities in relation to media and measurement, as well as greater transparency.
'We wanted to make sure we could continue building awareness and reaching customers at other touchpoints before they even come into DoorDash,' said Peter Giordano, general manager of DoorDash Ads' platform and growth services, when discussing offsite advertising.
'You can do a lot more branding and storytelling on TikTok and on YouTube than you certainly can with a sponsored product [ad] in a consumer app,' added Giordano later.
The acquisition of Symbiosys, which had between 30-35 employees as of last year, is just one piece of DoorDash Ads' largest update since it launched nearly four years ago.
As part of the changes, DoorDash Ads is also introducing a number of tools for restaurant marketers that leverage artificial intelligence (AI). This type of 'smart' targeting has been available for promotions since April, and 80% of new campaigns from small- and mid-sized merchants are already applying the feature, according to Giordano. Next steps involve porting the technology over to ad campaigns, including those running offsite.
DoorDash Ads' longer-term roadmap positions automation to do much of the heavy lifting for the more than 150,000 advertisers that use its platform globally. Its approach mirrors how other digital advertising players, including Amazon and Meta, are investing in AI to streamline how campaigns on their sites are created, targeted and measured.
'The ultimate vision — and I'm using a restaurant advertiser here as an example — is [that] our platform will automatically and programmatically allocate their budgets across both ads and promotions, and within promotions across different promotion types,' said Giordano. 'We wanted to basically take all of the guesswork out of the equation for our advertisers.'
In addition to the AI solutions, DoorDash Ads is implementing more robust interest-based targeting and category share insights for restaurant marketers using its ads manager, along with a report builder for tracking marketing spend and improvements to the ways merchants can reconcile their finances. For more general brands, it is enhancing its sponsored brand offerings in areas like video and expanding sponsored product ads in global search to better engage consumers looking for products in categories like alcohol and retail.
Taken together, these upgrades intend to address several of the biggest asks retail media networks are hearing from brands, namely around streamlining and providing more concrete ways to track results as spending commitments continue to climb.
'We know that advertisers have a lot of options in retail media these days, and one thing that I think everyone keeps hearing is simplify, simplify, simplify,' said Giordano. 'The more that we can just drive performance for them through a very simple process, that's what we're really striving for.'

It went public at $72, but it now trades at around $15. But after that steep drop, it looks like an undervalued growth stock -- and it might just churn a modest $1,000 investment into a lot more money. Why did growth investors lose interest in Lyft? Lyft, which initially only provided its ride-hailing services in the U.S. and Canada, is much smaller than its multinational competitor Uber (NYSE: UBER). Unlike Uber, Lyft doesn't provide any first-party food delivery services -- but it offers mutual perks for subscribers of other food delivery platforms like DoorDash and Grubhub. It also provides bicycle and electric scooter rentals in select cities. Lyft's number of active riders and total revenue surged in 2018, but both metrics cooled off in 2019 before plummeting during the pandemic in 2020. Its growth rates stabilized over the following four years, but it didn't exceed its pre-pandemic ridership levels until 2024. Lyft's recovery was throttled by stiff competition from Uber, driver shortages, regulatory challenges for gig economy workers, and the challenges of balancing its cost-cutting strategies with the expansion of its platform. Its co-founders, CEO Logan Green and president John Zimmer, also stepped down in 2023. Green was succeeded by David Risher, a former Amazon retail executive who focused on streamlining its business. Lyft's business gradually stabilized, but it didn't impress too many growth-oriented investors because its recovery seemed fragile. Uber, which controls roughly three-quarters of the U.S. ride-hailing market, still generated nearly eight times as much revenue as Lyft in 2024. What's the bull case for Lyft's recovery? Lyft struggled with some post-pandemic growing pains, but it also increased the stickiness of its platform with popular features like its Lyft Pass service for businesses, its subscription-based Price Lock service for recurring trips, its rebooted Lyft Pink membership tier, and its Women+ Connect feature (which matches female and non-binary riders with female and non-binary drivers). Its number of active riders rose to a record high of 26.1 million in the second quarter of 2025. To address its previous driver shortages, Lyft raised its incentives and offered more benefits. To offset the pressure of those higher costs, it provided more high-margin Lyft Black and Lyft SUV services, pared down its lower-margin bicycle and electric scooter rental services, expanded its higher-margin Lyft Media segment (which streams sponsored media content and digital ads across its app and in-car tablets), and pruned its workforce. That's why its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) turned positive in 2023, and why its generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) earnings and free cash flow (FCF) both turned green in 2024. It's plowing a lot of its cash into big buybacks to boost its earnings per share (EPS) and offset its dilution. That might make Lyft seem like a slower-growth, cost-conscious company, but it still has plenty of ways to expand. Its acquisition of Freenow, which closed on July 31 for about $200 million, will nearly double its total addressable market, add about $1 billion to its annual gross bookings, and diversify its business beyond North America. It's also been testing out autonomous vehicles with Mobileye and May Mobility in select cities, and those vehicles could eventually replace its human drivers while widening its moat against Alphabet's Waymo, Tesla's Robotaxi, and other driverless ride-hailing services. Why is Lyft a great place to park $1,000? From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect Lyft's revenue and adjusted EBITDA to grow at a CAGR of 13% and 29%, respectively. With an enterprise value of $5.05 billion, it looks like a bargain at less than one times this year's sales and 10 times its adjusted EBITDA. Uber trades at 4 times this year's sales and 22 times its adjusted EBITDA. Therefore, Lyft's stock could easily double or triple within the next few years if its growth strategies impress the bulls again. We should take those estimates (which don't fully account for its takeover of Freenow) with a grain of salt. But if you expect Lyft to continue growing in Uber's shadow while balancing its disciplined spending and expansion strategies, it could be a great place to park $1,000 over the next few years. Buy this 'exceptional growth stock' for more than 45% upside, says UBS
Amer Sports is an underappreciated growth stock, according to UBS. UBS reiterated a buy rating on the Finnish sporting equipment stock on Wednesday, and raised its price target to $52 per share from $50. UBS' forecast implies more than 45% upside from Tuesday's $35.74 close. Amer Sports is the parent company of brands including Arc'teryx and Wilson. Analyst Jay Sole labeled Amer Sports as an "exceptional growth stock" thanks to what he said are promising opportunities tied to its Arc'teryx and Salomon brands. Both were standout components of the company's recent quarterly results, he said, noting that the company's better-than-expected second-quarter results and its strong full-year outlook helped cement his view. "While the stock price fell over the print, we believe this was mostly due to positioning and wholesale channel noise. Neither factor impacts our thesis." "We expect AS to drive this growth via DTC [direct-to-consumer] expansion in Arc'teryx, multichannel growth in Salomon, and deeper international expansion in Ball & Racquet," he said. "By channel, we model faster DTC growth given retail store rollout primarily in North America and China and higher eCommerce sales." "We think AS is a growth stock. Our sense is that the market is skeptical of Amer's growth potential because of its high leverage to China amid a challenging consumer environment and ongoing global macro uncertainty. There's a clear map for swaying President Trump — and it goes far beyond the cartoonish commentary that flattery and gifts are the surest ways. Why it matters: We talked to CEOs and world leaders who've had some success in working with Trump, as well as several aides watching the action inside the room. From their accounts, we stitched together the tricks for shifting or shaping Trump's views. State of play: In Trump's second term, he's more self-confident and more indifferent to the opinions of others. But the savviest internal operators still know how to retrofit logic and strategy so they're speaking fluent Trump — his love language. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is a master practitioner, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio is none too shabby. As far as foreign leaders go, Finnish President Alexander Stubb — a transatlantic triathlete straight out of central casting — has impressed Trump with his golf game, vivid history lessons and tough talk on Russia. For obvious reasons, none of our sources would discuss their Trump tradecraft on the record. But here are 11 top Trump tactics, given the known knowns of operating today. Each component or step was confirmed to us by multiple people who've seen success up close: Put a sock in it. There's nothing but downside to trashing Trump, his policies, or allies. There are simply too many Laura Loomers desperately seeking evidence of disloyalty. It's widely known internally that the boss feeds on evidence that someone is not right "on Trump." Put a sock in the mouths of others. You often pay for the sins of friends, partners or associates who trash Trump. One big job of ambassadors to the U.S. and lobbyists for big companies is to argue for silence among those above, and let things play out privately. Don't overreact. Many make the mistake of responding impulsively to Trump's impulsiveness. No matter what he says or claims to be doing, wait. It often takes days or weeks to realize if Trump will stick to something — or will simply change his mind or move on. Build two spheres of influence. Think of Trump's two ears. One is full of throwback MAGA purists, skeptical of anyone not purebred MAGA. You need to deeply understand this world and find — or hire — MAGA-savvy operators like Arthur Schwartz, Cliff Sims, Andy Surabian, Jeff Miller, Jason Miller, Chris LaCivita, Kellyanne Conway, Brian Ballard or Ches McDowell. The other ear hears the whispers of more conventionally rational actors like Rubio, Bessent or White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. These relationships tend to be peer-to-peer and require cultivation. Everything's negotiable. Trump lives for the transaction and public illumination of "big deals." You see this almost daily now, with Nvidia giving the U.S. a 15% cut of chip sales to China, or Apple's Tim Cook announcing another deal investing in American workers. You need to come to the table with a deal that's glossy and easy to explain, even if the details are flimsy. Remember, it's WWE or reality TV. Trump thinks about optics differently than, um, probably everyone else in business and politics. In his mind, it's all pageantry, posturing and PR — basically make-believe until a deal is done or dead. Shock and awe is a tactic. Outrage is good, or at least fine. In his mind, you only remember "the deal," not how you got there. Kiss ass — but in moderation. The cartoonish interpretation of Trump is to just come, like the three kings, bearing gifts, preferably of gold. There's some truth here. But Trump is better at sniffing out cringey obsequiousness than some think. He loves gifts but also exploits pure weakness. Grandeur in his love language. He loathes betas. The Saudis put on a masterclass with the palatial pomp and opulence during his state visit in May, when he secured $600 billion in investment commitments to the U.S. But pure boot-licking can backfire. The single most successful way to frame an idea for Trump is to show how it'll benefit him. Get face-to-face. Trump will say or write horrible things about people, nations or companies. But rarely in person, one-on-one. He wants to be liked and comes off kinder, more interested, less erratic when face-to-face. Just ask Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan: Trump said in a Truth Social post that he "must resign, immediately," then wrote four days later after meeting with him: "His success and rise is an amazing story." The trick is getting in the room, away from cameras and social media. Never assume the deal is fully done. What makes Trump maddening to deal with is his propensity to change his mind or mood — often on a dime, provoked by a random clip or conversation. A final deal is never truly final. Think of it as a happy moment in time — subject to change. Play the long game. None of these techniques is a one-off. We're not quite one-sixth of the way (213 days) through Trump's second term. The savviest leaders, companies and people tend to all 11 of these steps methodically and consistently over years, in bright times and bad. Pony up. Trump is aggressively fundraising for his MAGA Inc. super PAC and other political committees. Dinners sometimes cost $1 million a plate. The New York Times has extensively documented how contributors have received favorable treatment, including executives from crypto and healthcare companies. Zoom in: European leaders — bludgeoned by Trump in the early weeks of his presidency, and with more to lose than most — cracked the Trump code at the White House on Monday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky learned the lessons of February's Oval Office meltdown: He arrived in suit-like attire, thanked Trump a dozen times, played nice with MAGA-aligned journalists, and praised First Lady Melania Trump for speaking out about the war's toll on children. The rest of the delegation layered on flourishes tailored to Trump's style, recognizing "Dear Donald" as uniquely suited to assembling world leaders and achieving peace through strength. The Europeans sweetened the pitch with a glossy, round number: $100 billion in U.S. weapons, purchased by Ukraine and financed by Europe, in exchange for security guarantees.
