Saudi Arabia launches BAE Systems Arabian Industries to boost local manufacturing

Arab News21-05-2025
JEDDAH: Defense manufacturing is set to advance in Saudi Arabia with the launch of BAE Systems Arabian Industries, a new entity aimed at accelerating localization and strengthening the Kingdom's military industrial base.
The company results from the merger of two major players in the defense ecosystem — BAE Systems Saudi Development and Training, which focuses on capability building, and the Saudi Maintenance and Supply Chain Management Co., a provider of supply chain and technical services, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The move marks further progress in the Kingdom's push to expand its defense capabilities, with localization of military spending rising to 19.35 percent in 2024, up from just 4 percent in 2018. The Kingdom aims to surpass 50 percent by 2030, in line with Vision 2030's goal of a self-sufficient defense sector.
Ahmad Abdulaziz Al-Ohali, governor of the General Authority for Military Industries, inaugurated BAE Systems Arabian Industries at an official ceremony held at the company's new headquarters in Riyadh, attended by several officials and defense industry leaders.
In a post on his X handle, the governor said: 'This will enhance local content and open up broad horizons for national and international companies to contribute to building a solid and sustainable military-industrial system, with the goal of enhancing local content in terms of human and technical cadres.'
The merger was finalized nearly four months ago to consolidate operational strengths and leverage over three decades of experience in defense training, capability development, and logistics.
'He pointed out that the integration of national and global expertise within this unified entity reflects the confidence of major companies in the attractive investment environment provided by the authority in cooperation with its partners in both the public and private sectors,' the SPA report stated.
Al-Ohali noted that the initiative would play a key role in transferring knowledge and building national expertise, supporting the Kingdom's goal of localizing over 50 percent of military spending by 2030.
He reaffirmed the authority's support for initiatives that boost local content and create opportunities for both national and international companies to help build a strong and sustainable military-industrial sector.
In a LinkedIn post, Abdulatif Al-Shaikh, the new company's CEO said: 'We are guided by a clear vision to be the leading Saudi company in the defense sector by supporting and developing capabilities within the Kingdom and across the region, in alignment with Vision 2030.'
In another development, Saudi Arabia recently completed production of its first locally manufactured components for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD system launcher in Jeddah.
This follows localization agreements signed during the 2024 World Defense Show and reflects increasing technical collaboration with global defense firms such as Lockheed Martin.

Saudi Premium Residency Draws 40,000 Applicants Amid Vision 2030 Push

Over 40,000 people have applied for Saudi Premium Residency between January 2024 and July 2025, marking a noticeable increase in demand for the scheme, according to Gulf News. In line with Vision 2030, the Saudi Premium Residency represents a unique program that allows talented individuals, investors, entrepreneurs and high-value workers to work and live in the Kingdom without requiring a local sponsor. The platform has recently received 40,163 applications from both local and international applicants. In 2024, the Kingdom issued 8,074 Premium Residency permits. The 'exceptional competence' category secured the largest portion with 5,578 permits, followed by the 'talent' category with 348, and the remainder distributed across real estate ownership, entrepreneurship, and investment. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia broadened the program from two to seven categories in early 2024. Therefore, the program now covers exceptional competence, talent, investor, entrepreneur, real estate owner, as well as limited-duration and unlimited-duration residency options. Premium residency visa holders enjoy a vast array of privileges, such as permanent or time-limited residency for themselves and their families, property ownership rights, visa-free travel, and exemption from expat levies. Crucially, the program grants residents usufruct rights to properties in Mecca and Medina for up to 99 years, in addition to access to citizen-designated airport lanes. Overall, the scheme stands out as a cornerstone of the Saudi Arabia's strategy to foster its global competitiveness by creating a more appealing environment for both living and business. Riyadh Air Signs Global Distribution Deal with Spain's Amadeus to Fuel Expansion Plans

Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia's new national carrier and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund, has signed a global distribution agreement with Spain-based Amadeus, a leading travel technology provider. The strategic move will give the airline access to one of the world's largest networks of travel agents, bolstering its growth strategy and supporting the Kingdom's transformation drive under Vision 2030. According to an Amadeus statement issued Thursday, the partnership will enable Riyadh Air to join the Amadeus Travel Platform, connecting it with travel agents and distributors in over 190 countries. The agreement is aimed at ensuring the airline's offerings reach travelers worldwide, enhancing Saudi Arabia's appeal as a global tourism destination and reinforcing its role as a central hub for aviation and travel. Vincent Coste, Chief Commercial Officer of Riyadh Air, said the company's mission is to build a world-class airline that embodies Saudi Arabia's ambitions. He added that the partnership with Amadeus provides the global reach, distribution strength, and retailing capabilities needed to achieve the airline's goal of serving more than 100 destinations by 2030. 'This collaboration is not only about enabling seamless travel experiences,' Coste said, 'but also about contributing to the broader national vision of diversifying the economy, growing tourism, and enhancing global connectivity.' The agreement also covers the future distribution of Riyadh Air's content through Amadeus' New Distribution Capability (NDC) framework, giving the airline greater ability to offer dynamic, personalized deals to travelers while maintaining stronger control over indirect sales strategies. These advanced capabilities will help Riyadh Air deliver a modern, flexible, customer-focused retail experience. Maher Koubaa, Executive Vice President for Travel and Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Amadeus, described the deal as a milestone in the development of Saudi Arabia's aviation sector. He said the launch of Riyadh Air marks a significant moment for the Kingdom's aviation industry, and that Amadeus brings not only global reach but also advanced retailing, marketing, and data analytics tools to help the airline compete internationally. Founded in 2023 under the patronage of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Riyadh Air is a key part of Saudi Arabia's strategy to diversify its economy, invest in tourism and infrastructure, and position the Kingdom as a global aviation hub. Backed by the Public Investment Fund, the carrier is expected to contribute more than $20 billion to Saudi Arabia's non-oil GDP and create over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs in the domestic market.
