ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)In collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), Abu Dhabi Maritime has launched the third edition of the Abu Dhabi Maritime Awards, to take place during the Abu Dhabi International Boat Show on 20 November 2025.The Abu Dhabi Maritime Awards aim to set benchmarks for excellence in marina management and operations throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and Türkiye (MENAT) and to highlight their exceptional work. Submissions are now open to all licensed marina owners or operators throughout the MENAT region.Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), said: "The launch of the third edition of the Abu Dhabi Maritime Awards represents a significant milestone in our efforts to establish an integrated framework that enhances marina operations and encourages the adoption of best practices across this vital sector. With this expansion to 13 total awards categories and one special recognition, we hope to bring even more global attention to the exciting work and ideas across the regional marina industry. We look forward to seeing participating marinas' achievements this year and to sharing them with the world.'Returning to the third edition are the five categories recognising exceptional performance by marinas in Customer Experience, Employer Excellence, Health & Safety, Innovation, and Sustainability. The Outstanding Marina award goes to the marina that has shown distinction across all five dimensions.New this year are six project and individual-based award categories to supplement the awards' six existing accolades for marina organisations.A seventh new category, Outstanding Emerging Marina, will become the programme's second top honour. Designed specifically for small and medium enterprises, it has the same criteria as the Outstanding Marina category but is limited to marinas with 200 or fewer berths.Outstanding Marina and Outstanding Emerging Marina award applicants are automatically considered for the five organisational sub-categories. However, to ensure equitable opportunity for all participating marinas, winners of the top two honours will be excluded from wins in additional organisation-based categories.Three new project-based categories will reward the most impactful marina Sustainability Project, Innovation Project, and Wellbeing Project. These awards give marinas a chance to showcase a single standout programme or initiative. These categories are designed to recognise targeted efforts with demonstrated success, rather than organisation-wide approaches.The three new individual categories will celebrate the people making a difference in the regional marina industry. With the Outstanding Leader Award, Outstanding Service Hero Award, and Rising Star Award, the Abu Dhabi Maritime Awards aim to acknowledge the managers and workers who inspire their colleagues, customers, and communities.Finally, the returning Most Popular Marina recognition will also feature in the programme's 2025 edition. Later this year, members of the public will be invited to cast their votes for their favourite marina through a tamper-resistant online portal.

In a recent interview with Aletihad, Captain Saif Al Mheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Maritime and Chief Sustainability Officer at AD Ports Group, outlined the initiatives shaping a future-ready maritime ecosystem in Abu June 2025, Abu Dhabi published the new Maritime Safety Regulations (Administrative Decision no. 69/2025), consolidating safety, environmental, and operational standards for all waterway users. Abu Dhabi Maritime is responsible for issuing No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for maritime development, a prerequisite for most shore and offshore construction in the Al Mheiri explained that developers must demonstrate climate resilience in infrastructure design, which includes considerations for sea-level rise, marine habitat protection, long-term material durability, public waterway accessibility, pollution control, and waste management. Digital Transformation Abu Dhabi Maritime continues to digitalise public maritime services to increase their accessibility and broaden awareness of maritime safety rules. Captain Al Mheiri noted that Al Nalia app, now in its second phase, allows residents and maritime operators to book marina berths, report hazards, and access digital safety maps. The app also integrates ticket booking for public ferries and provides push notifications for weather alerts and maritime circulars, making waterways safer and more accessible for residents and Dhabi Maritime also operates MARSDNA, a digital platform that allows maritime companies to measure and improve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Since its launch less than a year ago, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Mobility, MARSDNA has already helped over 50 companies benchmark sustainability and adopt targeted improvements, according to Captain Al Mheiri. With plans to gradually expand its scope, this digital platform is currently open to shipping companies, port and terminal operators, freight forwarders and cargo beneficiaries, marine and offshore services providers, and marina Saif Al Mheiri also noted that the Department of Municipalities and Transport and Abu Dhabi Mobility Abu Dhabi Maritime are studying opportunities to expand their current network of four water taxi routes (serving nine destinations) and two ferry routes (four destinations). The aim is to maximise connectivity and benefits for Abu Dhabi residents, enterprises, and visitors, he said. Investing in Emirati Talent Beyond infrastructure and digital tools, Captain Al Mheiri stressed that Abu Dhabi Maritime is investing heavily in human capital. The Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy celebrated its first cohort of 194 graduates in June 2025, with 26 joining AD Ports Group immediately. 'Abu Dhabi Maritime and its employees benefit from AD Ports Group's local talent development and Emiratisation initiatives,' Captain Al Mheiri said. Abu Dhabi Extends Road Toll Hours and Removes Daily, Monthly Caps
Starting Monday, September 1, Abu Dhabi motorists will face extended toll charges as part of new traffic rules aimed at easing congestion during peak hours, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced. Drivers will now pay Dh4 when passing through Darb toll gates from 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, extending the current afternoon charging window by two hours. Morning tolls remain unchanged at 7am to 9am on the same days. The toll gates remain free outside peak hours, on Sundays, and during official holidays. The four gates are located at Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Al Maqta Bridge, and Musaffah Bridge. In addition to extended hours, the government will also remove the existing daily and monthly toll caps. Previously, motorists paid no more than Dh16 per day or Dh200 per month for a first registered vehicle. These limits will be lifted starting September. The ITC confirmed that exemptions will continue for people with disabilities, retirees, senior citizens, and low-income families. Q Mobility, a subsidiary of ADQ, will oversee the updated Darb toll system in coordination with government authorities. The move comes as Abu Dhabi's population surpassed 4.1 million in 2024, up 51 percent in a decade, putting pressure on the emirate's growing road network.

Abu Dhabi revises DARB toll timings, removes daily and monthly caps
Abu Dhabi will start charging Darb tolls for an additional two hours in the evening from September 1 and remove daily and monthly caps on toll usage. Making the announcement, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) said drivers will be charged AED 4 every time they pass a darb toll gate from 3pm, instead of the previous 5pm. The tolls will not be collected after 7pm. Meanwhile, there will be no changes to the morning period, which will remain 7am to 9am. The tolls will continue to be clocked Monday through Saturday, with no fees collected on Sundays and official public holidays. The authority added that caps on daily toll usage of AED 16 will be removed, along with monthly limits of AED 200 for private vehicles. Currently, monthly daily limits are AED150 for a send private vehicle and AED100 for a third or any additional vehicle. Eligible groups, including People of Determination, low-income families, senior citizens and retirees, will be exempted from the new rule.
