Cade Horton tosses 2-hit ball over 5 innings as Cubs beat Orioles 1-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Cade Horton tossed two-hit ball over five innings, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a terrific start by Trevor Rogers to beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 on Friday.
The Cubs showed a video tribute of Ryne Sandberg and held 23 seconds of silence prior to their first home game since the Hall of Famer died. Former teammates Shawon Dunston, Jody Davis and Rick Sutcliffe then honored their friend by carrying a base onto the field and placing it at second.
A few hours earlier, Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field during a news conference at home plate with Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, Gov. JB Pritzker and mayor Brandon Johnson.
Ian Happ hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning against Rogers, and the Cubs started the weekend series on a winning note after losing two of three at Milwaukee. They began the day trailing the NL Central-leading Brewers by one game.
Horton (5-3) delivered his third straight scoreless outing.
Caleb Thielbar, newcomer Andrew Kittredge and Brad Keller each worked an inning. Daniel Palencia pitched around a two-out double by Adley Rutschman in the ninth, retiring Tyler O'Neill on a fly to deep left for his 15th save in 16 chances.
Rogers (4-2) was a tough-luck loser for Baltimore. The left-hander matched a career high by going eight innings and allowed one run and four hits. He struck out eight and walked none. Key moment

MILWAUKEE — Pete Alonso hit his 252nd career home run Saturday night, tying the New York Mets record held by Darryl Strawberry for 37 years. Alonso connected against Milwaukee Brewers starter Tobias Myers leading off the second inning for his 26th homer this season, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. The 413-foot shot to left-center came on a 1-2 fastball at the top of the strike zone. It was Alonso's fourth homer in eight games, since he went deep Aug. 1 against San Francisco to end an 0-for-19 slump. 'It means a lot. The slugger's go-ahead, three-run shot in the ninth inning off All-Star closer Devin Williams saved New York's season and rallied the Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers in the decisive Game 3 of their NL Wild Card Series. A homegrown star drafted by the Mets in 2016, Alonso broke into the big leagues with a bang in 2019, hitting 53 home runs to set a major league rookie record and establish a franchise high for a single season. The five-time All-Star, nicknamed The Polar Bear, has reached 40 two other times and been one of the most consistent sluggers in baseball since his arrival. After a protracted negotiation, he returned to the Mets as a free agent in February on a $54 million, two-year contract that includes a $24 million player option for 2026, which Alonso will likely decline. The only other active players who lead their current franchise in home runs are Manny Machado (Padres) and Mike Trout (Angels). Giancarlo Stanton, now with the New York Yankees, holds the Miami mark with 267 for the Marlins. Strawberry broke the previous Mets record with his 155th home run on May 3, 1988, passing Dave Kingman. The sweet-swinging outfielder hit 252 in 1,109 games for New York during his first eight major league seasons from 1983-90. He later played for the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees, finishing his 17-year career with 335 homers. The 30-year-old Alonso played his 963rd game Saturday night. The durable first baseman has appeared in 370 straight, a team record. The Diamondbacks and Padres are the lone major league clubs that haven't had a player hit more than 252 homers for them. Luis Gonzalez holds the Arizona record with 224, and Machado entered Saturday with 187 for San Diego.

Last Saturday, Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones said plenty about linebacker Micah Parsons. This Saturday, Jones said nothing. Asked about the status of the conversations with Parsons by Kristi Scales of 105.3 The Fan before the preseason opener against the Rams, Jones offered up s word shrimp salad. 'I'm glad to see he's working out, in shape, and feels great, and so all of that's good, and, I don't have anything to comment on,' Jones said. Given the extent to which Jones has been talking (and talking . . . and talking) about Parsons, the silence speaks volumes. Especially with the Hollywood premiere of the Netflix All-About-Jerry docuseries happening on Monday. This week will be about promoting The Jerry Show, which debuts on August 19. What better way to start the push for the latest NFL-Netflix partnership than to dominate the sports news with the signing of Parsons to his overdue long-term deal? Hey, if the series does well enough, maybe the NFL will end up owning 10 percent of Netflix, too.

Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid evaluates Josh Simmons' preseason debut
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Josh Simmons with the No. 32 pick in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL draft to perform immediately on the field. He didn't disappoint in his game debut on Saturday, earning unique praise from head coach Andy Reid. "I wasn't screaming at him, so I figured he did okay. He looked like he had a solid day, especially for his first game; he's been working his tail off. That kid never complains about anything; he just goes," said Reid during his postgame press conference. "He and (OL) Kingsley (Suamataia) are trying to develop something over there, and they haven't missed any snaps. We'll see how it all works out and sorts out, but I thought for the first time out they did a nice job."
