Bob Iger Insists Disney's Focus Is on Original Movies—but Is It?
A glance at the list of announced films coming from Walt Disney Studios—including Disney's live-action and animated divisions, plus Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, and more—will tell you a few things. The biggest is that the upcoming slate leans heavily toward sequels, reboots, remakes, and new entries in well-known series, something the company's CEO, Bob Iger, seemed to hedge against in a recent earnings call. 'I wouldn't say that we've got a priority one way or the other,' The Wrap reports he said in response to a question about whether or not the studio is leaning more into original or familiar titles. 'Our priority is to put out great movies that ultimately resonate with consumers, and the more we can find and develop original property, the better.' But while Iger understands the value of 'creating new IP,' he's also not about to turn his back on Disney's popular existing IP, either. He acknowledged that sequels and films that 'bring [existing IP] forward in a more modern way, as we've done, or convert what was previously animation to live action… it's just a great opportunity for the company and supports our franchises.' He used the live-action Moana, due in 2026, as an example. That series in particular is riding high after 2024's smash hit animation Moana 2, an achievement made even more impressive because it was originally intended to be a Disney+ project rather than a theatrical release. It's the perfect positive focal point for Disney shareholders, the audience for today's earnings call. That said, it may be a bit unfair to peek at Disney's future calendar, which is stuffed full of well-known IP, and declare that Disney isn't making an effort to create original films. Most of the films the studio dates well in advance—from the upcoming Tron: Ares to the Avatar sequels, The Mandalorian and Grogu, Toy Story 5, Frozen III, and the next Avengers films—are those big franchise films that will benefit from fan excitement, even years in advance. And it's no secret Disney's top priority is making money, same as every other Hollywood studio. To get a true feeling for whether or not Iger is speaking the truth, you'd need to time-warp into the future a few years, then look back at all the titles that actually got released over a certain span of time. Maybe there'd be more original movies than we think. However, we must also note that Iger's definition of what constitutes 'original' is not what you might expect. Like, say, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He's aware other studios have made Fantastic Four movies before, of course. But also: 'We kind of consider the one that we did an original property in many respects, because we're introducing those characters to people who are not familiar with them at all.' The new season finds Peacemaker facing a version of life he's always dreamed of, only to be forced into a reckoning with his past and an uncertain future. James Gunn returns to write all eight episodes and directs three, including the season opener. Cena is back in full gear, joined once again by Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee, as the crew steps into a bigger narrative than ever before. This time, the story stretches far beyond Team Peacemaker. Frank Grillo enters the scene as Rick Flag Sr., connecting threads between Superman , Creature Commandos , and what lies ahead for the DCU. Fans can also look forward to crossover appearances from Superman characters like Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Sean Gunn as the shady Maxwell Lord. On top of all that, Peacemaker Season 2 will introduce a new face with Red St. Wild, played by Michael Rooker, another staple of Gunn's cinematic world. With Superman clearing the runway and Peacemaker set to take off again, it's looking like a wild, fun, and connected ride ahead for DC fans.

Man Who Vowed on TikTok to Kill Trump Will Plead Guilty, Court Records Show
A Pennsylvania man who the federal authorities said vowed on TikTok before President Trump's inauguration in January to kill him to stave off a 'literal oligarchy' has agreed to plead guilty to making the threats, according to court documents. The man, Jacob Buckley, 22, of Port Matilda, Pa., is facing a maximum sentence of five years in prison in connection with the remarks, part of a cycle of threats and political violence in the United States punctuated by the July 2024 attempted assassination of Mr. Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa. In a plea agreement filed on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Williamsport, Pa., Mr. Buckley accepted responsibility for his social media posts, which the authorities said had violated a federal law that makes it illegal to threaten the president, president-elect or vice president. Responding to a TikTok stream on Jan. 16, Mr. Buckley wrote a series of violent posts that referred to Mr. Trump's pending inauguration on Jan. 20, the authorities said. 'Bro we going into a literal oligarchy in 4 days and im going to kill Trump,' Mr. Buckley wrote, according to a charging document. Twice that day, Mr. Buckley threatened to assassinate Mr. Trump and also target Mr. Trump's supporters, the authorities said. Prosecutors said that Mr. Buckley wrote: 'I hate MAGA republicans bro on god I'll kill all of them.' Mr. Buckley's sentencing has not been scheduled. A lawyer for Mr. Buckley did not immediately respond on Wednesday to a request for comment. Neither did the White House. The threats attributed to Mr. Buckley reflected the intense climate of political violence and tribalism in the United States in which both Republicans and Democrats have been targeted. While holding a campaign rally in Butler in July 2024, Mr. Trump was grazed on his right ear by gunfire from a would-be assassin, who killed a bystander and injured two others before the Secret Service shot and killed him. Since then, several people have been charged with threatening Mr. Trump. In April, another Pennsylvania man was arrested after saying he had planned to assassinate Mr. Trump, Elon Musk and other government officials in comments that he posted on YouTube, the authorities said. Democrats have also been confronted by hostile actors. In 2022, an intruder broke into the San Francisco home of Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, and beat her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer. The attacker, David DePape, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In 2017, Representative Steve Scalise, Republican of Louisiana, who is now the House majority leader, was gravely wounded at a congressional baseball game practice session in the Washington, D.C., area by a lone gunman who was said to be distraught over Mr. Trump's election in 2016.
