The NBA made a mistake not getting involved with the Big3

Ice Cube thinks it's 'silly' that Adam Silver doesn't show support for the Big 3(🎥 @theOGsShow / Ice Cube has been very vocal the last few years about the NBA's disregard and lack of support for the Big3, the 3-on-3 style touring league he started in 2017 that continues to chart its own course in the basketball space. This summer, as the Big3 has seemingly hit another peak of popularity, it's abundantly clear that was a missed opportunity by the NBA. In fact, the NBA should probably be thanking the Big3 for creating what's become something like the basketball version of the PGA's Champions tour. It's given players an off-ramp from a league that might be done with them, even if they're still able to play at a high level. For those who don't know, the PGA TOUR Champions is for senior golfers, those retired from the main PGA TOUR. Though Big3 players aren't what you would consider seniors -- basketball players retire a lot earlier than golfers -- the bulk of the league are former NBA players. Names like Joe Johnson, Greg Monroe, Mario Chalmers, Jordan Crawford, the list goes on. And because of the half-court setting, even the older players are able to compete in a real way. Now, this isn't exactly how Ice Cube wants the league marketed. He said earlier this summer he'd like active players to participate in the Big 3 too. Many of the players are still young enough to play in the NBA. Last year, Cube challenged the Olympic 3-on-3 gold medalist team to play the Big 3 champion. But even if it remains a league for former NBAers, it's still a fascinating model. What Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson did with their viral back-and-forth leading up to a one-on-one game ahead of their Big 3 season as teammates was internet gold. Michael Beasley wins the 1v1 vs Lance Stephenson for $100k 31-21 via @Next22Chapter They fed blog sites for weeks. Now, they both go viral regularly. That type of motion can only strengthen the NBA as a potential feeder for the league. Beasley challenged Carmelo Anthony for crying out loud... and we actually wanted to see it! Though Anthony declined, what happens when players of his ilk stop feeling like they're too big for something like the Big 3? It's already happening. Future Hall of Famer Dwight Howard is playing in the Big 3 right now. This was a big summer for the Big 3. If the NBA was smart, it'd find a way to get involved. John Wall isn't going anywhere Earlier today, I wrote about John Wall's retirement from the NBA on Tuesday and how he meant something different to Wizards fans. In summary, you just had to be there to understand. Today, we're learning Wall won't be going very far. NBA on Prime announced he'll be joining the network's NBA coverage as an analyst. We're excited to welcome @JohnWall to the #NBAonPrime family! 👏 Wall joins a crew that already includes Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki, Dwyane Wade, Steve Nash, Candace Parker, Stan Van Gundy, Dell Curry and Brent Barry. Prime just got another good one. Wall's work on NBA TV has been solid, and he has a unique perspective as one of the best floor generals of the last 20 years. Former 6-time All-Star Blake Griffin offers high praise for Cooper Flagg

Former 13-year veteran Blake Griffin believes rookie Cooper Flagg is in a great situation with the Dallas Mavericks and has all of the tools to have a successful career in the NBA. Flagg is viewed as a generational prospect as the No. 1 pick and enters next season with tremendous hype as the front-runner to win Rookie of the Year. He is projected to play a key role as a player who can help the Mavericks win now because of his overall skill set. The 18-year-old is highly regarded because of his size, athleticism and potential to impact games on both ends of the court. He also has an innate ability to process plays in real-time, traits that Griffin highlighted on the "Post Moves" podcast with Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston. I think he is the most complete player that we've seen come into the NBA in recent memory. I'm not saying he doesn't have room to grow -- he still has a ton of room to grow -- but he passes, shoots, defends (and) rebounds. He seems like a great teammate (and) a great kid. There is, like, what's the red flag? Which is really exciting for basketball to have these young guys. ... Cooper is just able to play and guard so many different positions. Flagg played two games with the Mavericks last month in summer league, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. He produced 31 points and four rebounds in his final appearance on July 12. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said the team is going to ask a lot of him during the upcoming season to maximize his development. They will experiment with him playing on and off the ball to ensure he can impact games in various ways, and it appears that Flagg is up for the challenge. Griffin, who will serve as an analyst for Amazon Prime, knows firsthand how much hype comes with being a top pick, and the six-time All-Star believes Flagg is in a good position to live up to the expectations. He is eager to see him take the court and begin his career with the Mavericks. "I love that he is in Dallas," Griffin said. "I think they have a really solid team around him. Most No. 1 picks are going to teams that haven't been doing too great in the past. But I'm just excited for him to start this journey."

Jayson Tatum speaks on Achilles injury for first time

It's been more than three months since Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in a playoff game against the New York Knicks, and he recently opened up about his recovery journey in a TikTok posted by the NBA. 'Rehab is tedious, man — six days a week. It's starting to get a little bit better now, I'm out the boot now,' Tatum said. 'Better days ahead, but just trying to take it one day at a time.' The Celtics have not announced a recovery timeline for the Celtics star, who was named to the All-NBA First Team in each of the last four seasons. President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens hasn't ruled out Tatum returning next season, but most players miss at least a year after tearing their Achilles. Tatum has made several public appearances since his injury; he hosted a basketball camp and charity fundraiser in his hometown of St. Louis in July, and attended a New England Patriots practice and briefly spoke at a Celtics community event in Providence. But he hasn't held a media availability and has mostly stayed out of the public eye since the injury. ESPN's Marc Spears reported shortly after Tatum underwent surgery that his father, Justin Tatum, expects his son to return to the floor in 8-9 months. According to that timeline, there's hope he would be available to lace up as early as February. But, earlier this month, Celtics team president Rich Gotham declined to put a timetable on Tatum's potential return when asked about whether the team would be open to clearing him toward the end of next season. 'What I know about JT is that he's gonna do everything he can to put us in the position to make a decision,' Gotham said. 'He's gonna work hard to get back as soon as he can, and we'll see how soon that is. But for right now, we're not really looking at timetables.' Tatum has turned to social media several times since the injury, expressing his frustration in late June on X/Twitter and writing: 'Day 45… this is some bullshit.' And his first interview since the injury, Tatum reflected on those early days. 'You got to be resilient,' Tatum said. '[Those] first six weeks of this was probably the toughest six weeks of any point in my life. Just had to accept it and realize it happened, and now I gotta do everything in my power to get back to who I was.'
