Orlando Pirates target former Real Madrid opposition analyst

Orlando Pirates are making ambitious changes to their technical team after the announcement that Jose Riveiro will be leaving.
44-year-old Pablo Franco Martin is a serious candidate for the top coaching job at Pirates. The Madrid-born tactician has held several interesting roles. Those include Opposition Analyst for Real Madrid and Head Coaching posts for Tanzanian side Simba SC, AmaZulu, Kuwaiti outfit Qadsia SC and now Al-Faisaly in Saudi Arabia's second tier.

Oswin Appollis suffered a little from 'second-season' syndrome after a breakout campaign in 2023-2024. This term, the Polokwane livewire only managed two goals and an assist from 25 league outings. Hardly earth-shattering numbers for a player expected to win games for his manager. Polokwane improved on last season's eighth-placed finish with a seventh-placed finish this term, so it's not as if his teammates regressed. Appollis claimed six goals and three assists in the league last time out.

Taifa Stars who could trouble Bafana

Having lost their previous three matches, Tanzania will be eager to snap their winless streak when they meet Bafana Bafana in a friendly at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday (7.30pm). We pick three Taita Stars players Bafana must keep a close eye on. Feisal Salum (central midfielder, Azam) Capped 41 times by Tanzania, Salum has been his national team's livewire in recent times. The central midfielder will be hell-bent on impressing on South African soil amid interest by Kaizer Chiefs. The 27-year-old is a dynamic and versatile midfielder admired for his powerful runs with the ball. Salum also boasts excellent long-range shooting attributes. He's often described as a 'box-to-box' midfielder, meaning he can contribute in defence and attack. Mohamed Husseini (left-back, Simba) Fresh from playing a pivotal role in helping Simba reach the CAF Confederation Cup final, where he scored the all-important goal in the semifinals first leg against Stellenbosch FC in Zanzibar, Husseini should be motivated to translate his club form to the national team. The 28-year-old is known for his blend of defensive prowess and attacking flair. He's a strong and reliable defender, also good at tackling and blocking shots. Simon Msuva (striker, Al-Talaba, Iraq) The 31-year-old Msuva is one of a few potent finishers in Tanzanian football in recent years, having scored more than 20 goals for the national team to be among the all-time top scorers. Msuva is also in red-hot form, scoring 12 goals with five assists in 34 games in the Iraq Stars League this season. The well-travelled Msuva is a strong and versatile striker known for his pace, strength and ability to link up with teammates. Msuva previously played for clubs Yanga in his homeland, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia, among others. Tanzania's losing streak in their past three fixtures January: they lost 2-0 at home to Kenya in a friendly January: they lost 2-0 in another friendly at home to Burkina Faso March: beaten 2-0 by Morocco away in a World Cup qualifier Did you know? Taifa Stars are ranked 107th in the Fifa rankings, 51 places behind South Africa. Ranked No 24 in Africa, Tanzania are 10 places adrift of Bafana.

Kaizer Chiefs' number one target for the winter transfer window is well-publicised. He is the 27-year-old midfielder Feisal Salum. The Tanzanian, still contracted to Azam FC in the Tanzania Premier League, landed in South Africa for his national team duties. Bafana Bafana will host the Taifa Stars in an international friendly this evening at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Kick-off will be at 19:30. According to the most recent reports, Salum has firmly rejected Azam's multiple new contract offers. What is missing is an offer from Amakhosi to Azam FC. Multiple reports have stated that Salum is keen on the Amakhosi project, desires a new challenge, and of course, wants to reunite with his former coach Nasreddine Nabi at Young Africans in 2021. Mokwena, who began his coaching career with Mamelodi Sundowns, previously spent three years at Pirates as Milutin Sredojević's assistant coach. After the Serb left the club suddenly in 2019, Mokwena was appointed interim head coach. After a brief spell in charge of Chippa United, Mokwena returned to Sundowns in 2020 as co-coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and was promoted to head coach in 2022. During his time with Sundowns, the club won three league titles. However, after winning the title again in the 2023/24 season, Mokwena was unceremoniously sacked. He then moved abroad to Morocco to take charge of Wydad. Mokwena's ability to win league titles has been seen as a positive that could land him the Pirates job. During Riveiro's era, Ezikamagebhula fell short in the league — something the club's hierarchy and demanding fans have been desperate to win. Pirates will have to act quickly if they want to appoint Mokwena, as newly crowned African champions Pyramids FC are reportedly also interested in his services. Mokwena was also linked with Egyptian giants Zamalek, but he's since revealed he's turned the down. 'Maybe the easiest to bat away would be Zamalek,' Mokwena added. 'Well, I didn't hear from them (Zamalek) after I had said I heard that coach Pitso [Mosimane] is also in the running for the position."
