
How social media lies fuelled a rush to war between India and Pakistan
Not long after the Indian government announced Operation Sindoor, the military offensive against Pakistan triggered by a militant attack in Kashmir that Delhi blamed on Islamabad, reports of major Pakistani defeats began to circulate online.
What began as disparate claims on social media platforms such as X soon became a cacophony of declarations of India's military might, broadcast as 'breaking news' and 'exclusives' on the country's biggest news programmes.
According to these posts and reports, India had variously shot down multiple Pakistani jets, captured a Pakistani pilot as well as Karachi port and taken over the Pakistani city of Lahore. Another false claim was that Pakistan's powerful military chief had been arrested and a coup had taken place. 'We'll be having breakfast in Rawalpindi tomorrow,' was a widely reshared post in the midst of hostilities, referring to the Pakistani city where its military is headquartered.
Many of these claims were accompanied by footage of explosions, crumbling structures and missiles being shot from the sky. The problem was, none of them were true.
A ceasefire on 10 May brought the two countries back from the brink of all-out war after the latest conflict, which marked the biggest crisis in decades between the nuclear-armed rivals, and was ignited after militants opened fire at a beauty spot in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing 26 people, mainly Indian tourists. India blamed Pakistan for the attack – a charge that Islamabad has denied.
Yet even as military hostilities have ceased, analysts, factcheckers and activists have documented how a fully-fledged war of disinformation took place online.
Misinformation and disinformation was also being circulated widely in Pakistan. The Pakistan government removed a ban on X just before the conflict broke out, and researchers found it immediately became a source of misinformation, though not on the same scale as in India.
Recycled and AI-generated footage purportedly showing Pakistani military victories was widely shared on social media and then amplified by both its mainstream media, respected journalists and government ministers to make fake claims such as the capture of an Indian pilot, a coup in the Indian army and Pakistani strikes wiping out India's defences.
There were also widely circulated fake reports that a Pakistani cyber-attack had wiped out most of the Indian power grid and that Indian soldiers had raised a white flag to surrender. In particular, video game simulations proved to be a popular tool in spreading disinformation about Pakistan 'delivering justice' against India.
A report into the social media war that surrounded the India-Pakistan conflict, released last week by civil society organisation The London Story, how X and Facebook owner Meta 'became fertile ground for the spread of war narratives, hate speech, and emotionally manipulative disinformation' and 'became drivers of nationalist incitement' in both countries.
In a written statement, a Meta spokesperson said, it took 'significant steps to fight the spread of misinformation', including removing content and labelling and reducing the reach of stories marked as false by their factcheckers.
While disinformation and misinformation were rampant on both sides, in India 'the scale went beyond what we have seen before,' said Joyojeet Pal, associate professor at the school of information, University of Michigan.
Pal is among those arguing that the misinformation campaign went beyond the usual nationalist propaganda often seen in both India and Pakistan: 'This had the power to push two nuclear armed countries closer to war.'
Analysts say that it is evidence of a new digital frontier in warfare, where an onslaught of tactical misinformation is used to manipulate the narrative and escalate tensions. Factcheckers say misinformation including the repurposing of old footage and widespread fake claims of military victories mirrored much of what had come out of Russia in the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The Washington DC-based Centre for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH), which tracked and documented the misinformation coming from both sides, warned that the weaponisation of misinformation and disinformation in the the most recent India-Pakistan conflict was 'not an isolated phenomenon, but part of a broader global trend in hybrid warfare'.
Raqib Hameed Naik, the executive director of CSOH, said there had been 'a pretty catastrophic failure' on the part of social media platforms to moderate and control the scale of disinformation that was being generated from both India and Pakistan. Of the 427 most concerning posts CSOH examined on X, some of which had almost 10 million views, only 73 had been flagged with a warning. X did not respond to request for comment.
Fabricated reports from India largely first emerged on social media platforms X and Facebook, Naik said, often shared or reposted by verified right-wing accounts. Many accounts were open supporters of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government, led by the prime minister, Narendra Modi, which has a long history of using social media to push its agenda. BJP politicians also reposted some of this material.
Among the examples circulating were a 2023 video of an Israeli airstrike on Gaza that was falsely claimed as an Indian strike on Pakistan, as well as an image of an Indian naval drill from the same year presented as evidence that the Indian navy had attacked and taken over Karachi port.
Video game imagery was passed off as real-life footage of India's air force downing one of Pakistan's JF-17 fighter jets, while footage from the Russian-Ukraine war was claimed to be scenes of 'massive airstrikes on Pakistan'. Doctored AI visuals were widely circulated to show Pakistan's defeat and visuals of a Turkish pilot was used in fabricated reports of a captured Pakistani pilot. Doctored images were used to fabricate reports of the murder of Pakistan's popular former prime minister Imran Khan.
Many of these posts first generated by Indian social media accounts gained millions of views and the misinformation spread to some of India's most widely watched TV news.
India's mainstream media, which has already suffered a major loss of credibility owing to its heavy pro-government stance under Modi, is now facing difficult questions. Some prominent anchors have already issued apologies.
Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), an Indian human rights organisation, has filed formal complaints to the broadcasting watchdog for 'serious ethical breaches' of six of the country's most prominent television news channels in their reporting of Operation Sindoor.
Teesta Setalvad, secretary of CJP, said channels had completely abandoned their responsibilities as neutral news broadcasters. 'Instead, they became propaganda collaborators,' she said.
Kanchan Gupta, a senior adviser to the Indian ministry of information and broadcasting, denied any government role in the misinformation campaign. He said the government had been 'very alert' to the issue of misinformation and has issued explicit advice to mainstream media reporting on the conflict.
'We set up a monitoring centre which operated 24-7 and scrutinised every bit of disinformation that could have a cascading impact, and a fact check was put out immediately. Social media platforms also cooperated with us to take down vast numbers of accounts spreading this disinformation. Whatever was in the ambit of the law to stop this was done.'
Gupta said that 'strong' notices had since been issued to several news channels for a violation of broadcasting rules. Nonetheless, he emphasised that the 'fog of war is universally accepted as a reality. It is a fact that in any conflict situation, whether overt or covert conflict, the nature of reportage tends to go high-pitch'.

U.S. President Donald Trump 's had signed an executive order subjecting Indian imports to a 50% tariff due to its purchase of Russian oil. The order subjects Indian imports to an additional 25% in duties on top of an existing 25% tariff. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been urged by India's opposition parties and the general public to stand up to Trump, labelling the move as 'bullying'. Trump has been warned his latest tirade threatens to undo two decades of diplomatic progress, analysts and officials say, and could derail other areas of cooperation as domestic political pressures drive both sides to harden their stances. While India has emerged in recent years as a key partner for Washington in its strategic rivalry with China, its large U.S. trade surplus and close relations with Russia – which Trump is seeking to pressure into agreeing to a peace agreement with Ukraine – have made it a prime target in the Republican president's global tariff offensive. Trump's taunt that India could buy oil from arch enemy Pakistan has also not gone down well in New Delhi, said two Indian government sources. India has also rejected repeated claims by Trump that he used trade as a lever to end a recent military conflict between India and Pakistan. In an unusually sharp statement this week, India accused the U.S. of double standards in singling it out for Russian oil imports while continuing to buy Russian uranium hexafluoride, palladium and fertiliser. On Wednesday, it called the tariffs "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," vowing to "take all actions necessary to protect its national interests." But New Delhi knows that any further escalation will hurt it in matters beyond trade, said the sources. Unlike China, India does not have leverage like supplies of rare earths to force Trump's hand to improve the terms of any trade deal, they said. In recent years, successive U.S. administrations, including Trump's first, carefully cultivated relations with India with an eye on it as a vital partner in long-term efforts to counter the growing might of China. But analysts say Trump's recent moves have plunged the relationship back to possibly its worst phase since the U.S. imposed sanctions on India for nuclear tests in 1998. "India is now in a trap: because of Trump's pressure, Modi will reduce India's oil purchases from Russia, but he cannot publicly admit to doing so for fear of looking like he's surrendering to Trump's blackmail," said Ashley Tellis at Washington's Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "We could be heading into a needless crisis that unravels a quarter century of hard-won gains with India." Indian state refiners have in recent days stopped buying Russian oil as discounts narrowed and pressure from Trump rose, Reuters has reported. New challenges for relations A more pressing challenge for India, analysts say, is the stark divergence between its priorities and Trump's political base on key issues such as work visas for tech professionals and offshoring of services. India has long been a major beneficiary of U.S. work visa programs and the outsourcing of software and business services, a sore point for Americans who have lost jobs to cheaper workers in India. Relations with India risk becoming a "football in American domestic politics," warned Evan Feigenbaum, a former senior State Department official under the Republican presidency of George W. Bush. "Issues that directly touch India are among the most partisan and explosive in Washington, including immigration and deportation, H1B visas for tech workers, offshoring and overseas manufacturing by U.S. companies, and technology sharing and co-innovation with foreigners," he wrote in a LinkedIn post. Since a 2008 deal to cooperate on civilian nuclear technology, the two countries have deepened intelligence sharing and defence cooperation and expanded interactions with Australia and Japan through the Quad grouping aimed at containing China's dominance in the Indo-Pacific. But fractures have appeared, despite Modi's rapport with Trump in his first term and then former President Joe Biden. Images in February of Indians deported by the U.S. on military planes, their hands and legs shackled, horrified the country just days before Modi went to see Trump seeking to stave off high tariffs. The relationship was also seriously tested in late 2023 when the U.S. said it had foiled a plot with Indian links to kill a Sikh separatist leader on U.S. soil. New Delhi has denied any official connection to the plot. "The Modi regime's credibility in the U.S. has gone down," said Sukh Deo Muni, a former Indian diplomat and a professor emeritus at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. "And maybe there are people who think that India or Modi had to be brought back on track, if not taught a lesson. And if that trend continues, I'm quite worried that the challenge is quite powerful and strong for India to navigate." Strengthening ties with US rivals One Indian government source said India needs to gradually repair ties with the U.S. while engaging more with other nations that have faced the brunt of Trump tariffs and aid cuts, including the African Union and the BRICS bloc that includes Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. India is already making some moves with Russia and China. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit New Delhi this year and on Tuesday, Russia said the two countries had discussed further strengthening defence cooperation "in the form of a particularly privileged strategic partnership." India has also boosted engagement with China, a change after years of tensions following a deadly border clash in 2020. Modi is set to visit China soon for the first time since 2018. "Russia will attempt to exploit the rift between the U.S. and India by proposing the restoration of the Russia-India-China trilateral and new projects in defence," said analyst Aleksei Zakharov at the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi.

Government ministers among eight killed in Ghana helicopter crash
Ghana's defence and environment ministers are among eight killed when a military helicopter crashed, the government has said. The West African country's military said the helicopter took off in the morning from the capital Accra and was heading northwest into the interior to the town of Obuasi when it went off the radar. Footage of the crash site shows debris on fire in a forest as people circle around to help. The cause of the crash was not immediately known. The military said an investigation was under way. Defence minister Edward Omane Boamah and environment minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were killed, along with the vice-chair of the National Democratic Congress ruling party, a top national security adviser and the helicopter's three crew members. State media said the aircraft was a Z-9 helicopter, which is often used for transport and medical evacuation. It was one of the worst air disasters in Ghana in more than a decade. A service helicopter crashed off the coast in May 2014 and killed at least three people. And in 2012 a cargo plane overran the runway in Accra and crashed into a bus full of passengers, killing at least 10 people.

U.S. Army sergeant suspected of shooting, wounding five fellow soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia
ATLANTA, Aug 6 (Reuters) - A U.S. Army sergeant is suspected of shooting and wounding five fellow soldiers with his personal handgun on Wednesday at Fort Stewart Army Airfield near Savannah, Georgia, before he was subdued by other soldiers and arrested, U.S. military officials said. All five soldiers struck by gunfire were listed in stable condition following the incident and are expected to recover, though three required surgery for their injuries, according to Brigadier General John Lubas, the base commander. The suspect was identified as Quornelius Radford, 28, an active-duty logistics sergeant assigned to the Second Armored Brigade at Fort Stewart. Lubas said Radford had not previously been deployed to combat. Lubas said at an afternoon press conference that the shooting unfolded shortly before 11 a.m. local time at the suspect's place of work on base. "I don't believe it had anything to do with a training event. Other than that, I can't speak to the motivations of this soldier." He said the firearm used was not a military weapon but a personal handgun. The base supports approximately 15,000 active-duty Army military personnel, as well as thousands of military retirees, family members, and others, according to its website.
