FCC Launches Probe Into iHeartMedia's Alleged Payola Practices
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched an investigation into iHeartMedia over whether the radio giant may be offering airplay as leverage to book artists — a practice that may violate 'payola' laws — to play at its events.
In a letter to iHeartMedia CEO Robert Pittman, FCC chairman Brendan Carr alleged that 'certain owners of federally licensed radio stations are effectively compelling musicians to perform at radio station events or festivals for free (or for reduced compensation) in exchange for more favorable airplay.'
Indeed, US law stipulates that any payments made to a radio station to influence airplay must be disclosed as sponsored content. If artists are trading appearances for airtime without such disclosure, the arrangement could be deemed illegal.
One of the events in question is the upcoming 2025 iteration of iHeartMedia's iHeartCountry Festival, which will go down on May 3rd in Austin, Texas with headliners Brooks & Dunn, Thomas Rhett, and Rascal Flatts.
'As iHeart finalizes its approach to this particular music festival, I want to ensure that it does so in a way that complies with federal payola requirements,' Carr wrote.
In his letter, Carr asked eight questions of Pittman, ranging from requests for information about the upcoming iHeartCountry Festival to inquiries as to whether or not artists were manipulated into accepting reduced fees for their appearances.
The letter — dated Monday, February 24th — gave iHeartMedia 10 days to respond. In a public statement, though, the company denied any wrongdoing.
'[Performing] at the iHeartCountry Festival — or declining to do so — has no bearing on our stations' airplay, and we do not make any overt or covert agreements about airplay with artists performing at our events,' the statement read (per The Hollywood Reporter). 'The iHeartCountry Festival provides the same kind of promotion that that we see with artists on talk shows, late night television, the Super Bowl and in digital music performances and events: the promotional value to the artists is the event itself, and, in our case, is unrelated to our radio airplay.'
Since being appointed chairman of the FCC by Donald Trump, Carr has also investigations into CBS, NPR, and PBS.

Following this morning's tragic news that Brent Hinds died in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday night (August 20th), Mastodon have issued a statement regarding their former singer-guitarist's passing. Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000, and remained with the acclaimed metal act until earlier this year, when the band decided to part ways with the singer-guitarist. In recent weeks, Hinds had expressed anger toward his former Mastodon bandmates, hurling some harsh insults at them for kicking him out of the band. Metallica and Benson Boone to headline S.F.'s Dreamfest
Metallica and Benson Boone are joining forces to raise money for Bay Area hospitals this fall. Both musical acts are scheduled to headline San Francisco's Dreamfest benefit concert, which supports UCSD Benioff Children's Hospitals, on Oct. 15. The event will be held in conjunction with Salesforce's annual Dreamforce tech conference, scheduled for Oct. 14-16 at the Moscone Center. In the middle of its M72 World Tour, which stopped at Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium for two nights in June, Metallica has been eyeing a future Super Bowl halftime show and a Las Vegas Sphere residency, according to the Bay Area thrash metal group's drummer, Lars Ulrich. Benson Boone, on the other hand, has only broken into the mainstream over the past year, drawing a strong fanbase — including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg — with his pop-rock anthems and gymnastic abilities, which he frequently shows off onstage. Dreamfest is slated to begin inside San Francisco's Chase Center with a VIP cocktail reception. During the awards ceremony, Andrew Santos, a former UCSF patient, will be honored with the Colin Powell Medal of Courage for surviving Arteriovenous Malformation and advocating for other young patients. Metallica will take the stage as a buffet, interactive experiences and more are set up throughout the venue. At the same time, 'Beautiful Things' singer Benson Boone will bring his backflipping charm to a separate stage just outside Chase Center at Bayfront Park. Dreamfest ticketholders will have access to both concerts. Tickets are on sale now and start at $1,500. Salesforce reports that the annual Dreamfest benefit concerts have raised $120 million for UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals since launching in 2010. Past performers have included East Bay rock trio Green Day, pop icon Janet Jackson and the legendary Fleetwood Mac. Last year, Elton John was scheduled to headline the event, despite having retired from touring, but canceled less than a month before due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' according to Dreamforce organizers. Imagine Dragons and Pink replaced the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician at the concert, which took place Sept. 18 at Oracle Park.

Matthew Stafford's back issue has sparked some bizarre theories. The Rams' veteran quarterback missed preseason action and most of training camp due to lingering back soreness — for which he's received epidurals to manage pain — and his wife, Kelly Stafford, is taking speculation over his health in stride. Taking to her Instagram Story on Thursday, Kelly reposted a Barstool Sports headline that read, 'The Best NFL conspiracy theory on the internet – Matthew Stafford died a couple weeks ago, got cloned, new one is now QB1 for the Rams.'
