Jiggly Caliente ‘RuPaul's Drag Race' Alumna Dies At 44

Forbes27-04-2025

Early Sunday morning, the reputable performer, activist, actress, trailblazer and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Bianca Castro passed away peacefully at the age of 44, surrounded by her family and close friends. The news broke shortly after a report that she had been hospitalized with a severe infection. With a career that spanned over twenty years, the world was first introduced to Bianca, also know by her stage name 'Jiggly Caliente,' on the fourth season of Drag Race, placing eighth overall in the competition. With her newfound fame, Jiggly established a name for herself in the entertainment industry and opened doors for both trans women and Filipino artists by being her authentic self.
Jiggly, an immigrant from the Philippines, brought Southeast Asian drag to an international stage with her introduction on Drag Race through her vibrant personality, humor, and quick-witted quips, making her a fan favorite in the long line of drag queens to appear on Drag Race. Her popularity later afforded her the chance to compete on RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars 6 in 2021 and later as a permanent judge on Drag Race Philippines in 2022, something only a select few members of the Drag Race cast, also known as 'Ru girls,' can say.
In 2016, she came out as a transgender woman, and later co-hosted Translation on OUTtv through the Apple TV app in 2020, which was the first talk show on any major network to showcase a cast that was all-trans. She also starred on the hit FX show Pose as Veronica Ferocity, a clothing shopkeeper and participant in the New York ballroom scene through the house of Ferocity. Jiggly's addition to the cast of Pose was more than just another role, as Pose tried to cast trans women, particularly trans women of color, who were previously seen and treated as invisible.
Several former contestants of Drag Race took to social media to give their condolences and heartfelt messages for Jiggly, whom many considered their friend.
In a post on X, Jink Monsoon, winner of Drag Race season 5 and the all-winners season of Drag Race All Stars, recounted her friendship with Jiggly, sharing that Jiggly hated it when she would sing show tunes, but she was able to sing to her friend one last time. 'She accomplished so much in a relatively short time and we are all so proud of her,' Monsoon said.
Jiggly's career married brand authenticity with advocacy, and that made her a force to be reckoned with, which is one of the main reasons why she became a name known by fans of drag internationally. Her life can serve as an example of what a life lived through resilience, authenticity, and a strong community can offer. Not only was she an inspiration to millions, but she did it all by authentically being herself.
Jiggly Caliente remained the queen she had always been, right to the end. 'New York's plus size Barbie' full of 'swerve for your nerve,' with a spirit larger than life, that the world could never dim or take away.

OUTtv: They're Here, They're Queer, They're Canadian!

While parts of Hollywood tiptoe backward on LGBTQ+ rights amid MAGA-fueled DEI backlash, Canada's OUTtv is strutting forward in heels — unapologetically and internationally. Billed as the world's first LGBTQ+ TV network, OUTtv launched in 2001 with a major assist from Canada's broadcast regulator, which granted it 'must-carry' status — meaning cable providers were required to include it in basic TV packages. That early boost helped the channel survive its startup years in the red light district high up on the Canadian TV dial. More from The Hollywood Reporter Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and 'Jurassic World Rebirth' Cast Stun London at World Premiere Eurovision Drama and 'The Nameless': Movistar Plus+ Exec Touts Focus on Event Programming Lewis Hamilton Signed Off on Brad Pitt and Damson Idris' Driving in 'F1: The Movie' But under CEO Brad Danks, OUTtv has morphed into a scrappy global streaming player, now available on Prime Video (North America, Australia, New Zealand), Apple TV+ (U.S. and Canada) and the Roku Channel (U.S.). More recently, OUTtv grew its European footprint by launching the FAST channel OUTflix Proud on Freeview in the UK. 'We really said, 'It's time to put our big-boy pants on and make our own content,'' says Danks. A big bet on streaming platforms in international markets was also encouraged by OUTtv early on finding licensing content increasingly impossible or too costly to obtain, not least as emerging streamers nabbed series rights as they entered the Canadian market. So OUTtv joined the original series game to attract subscribers on cable and digital platforms. OUTtv pivoted to such originals as Call Me Mother (a drag queen competition), Sew Fierce (for drag wardrobe designers) and Drag House Rules (a satirical spin on the genre). Canada's earlier embrace of queer rights — including same-sex marriage in 2005 — also gave OUTtv a head start as the Canadian Supreme Court ruling in 2005, a decade ahead of a similar U.S. Supreme Court ruling, opened the way for greater gains for Canadian queer communities. To be certain, divided Canadians still debate trans athletes, gender-inclusive bathrooms and drag queen events, but with less hate-filled speech than stateside. But Danks says a backlash is bubbling. 'There's been a real conservative revival,' he notes. 'I get arguments from people I haven't seen in 25 years — about spreading disease and mental illness and all that stuff.' The hate mail is louder in the U.S., where OUTtv expanded via streaming deals. 'You get kind of used to it,' Danks shrugs. 'But it's on a higher volume level.' He adds Canada faces its own retreat on queer rights in recent years, compared to a decade ago. That backlash in Canada coincides with the MAGA movement stateside. 'I would not have thought the United States would have been in the throes of this democratic crisis they're in right now. If you would have told me 15 years this would have been happening, I would have told you you're crazy,' Danks argues. OUTtv continues to expand into more precarious territories — recently partnering with Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan — while navigating censorship and coded rejections abroad. 'They'll say it's 'niche' or 'controversial,' ' Danks says. 'But we know what that means.' But as major Hollywood studios meld into their global-facing streaming platforms, local broadcasters looking to differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded TV market are turning to OUTtv for partnerships. All of which has allowed what began as a regulatory oddity on the Canadian dial to become a global platform for queer storytelling — porn-free, proudly indie and determined to keep growing. 'It's a marathon,' Danks says. 'But we're still running.' This story appeared in the June 11 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Click here to subscribe. File Photo by Jim Ruymen/UPI | License Photo June 18 (UPI) -- FX released the trailer for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 on Wednesday. The new season premieres on July 9 at 9 p.m. EDT on FXX and streams Thursdays on Hulu. One new episode has Frank (Danny DeVito) compete on The Golden Bachelor. He chooses a woman named Cock Chewa and host Jesse Palmer plays himself. Other episodes show another crossover with Abbott Elementary. The Sunny gang volunteered at the school in an episode of the ABC sitcom, but saved some raunchier activity for a Sunny episode. Another spoof's FX's own The Bear as Dee (Katilin Olson) and Charlie (Charlie Day) scream in an ambulance as Charlie demands she call him Chef. Regulars Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney and guest stars Mary Elizabeth Ellis and David Hornsby also appear. FX renewed It's Always Sunny for four seasons in 2020. That guaranteed seasons 15-18.

Jinkx Monsoon to take over lead role on Broadway's ‘Oh, Mary!'; says she's ‘lucky to be alive at same time as' Cole Escola

Mary Todd Lincoln, meet Jinkx Monsoon. Monsoon, best known for her winning runs on both 'RuPaul's Drag Race' and 'Drag Race All Stars,' announced on Wednesday that she is set to take over the lead role in the wild, Tony-winning historical spoof 'Oh, Mary!' on Broadway this summer. Current star Cole Escola won the Tony Award for best lead actor in a play for the role earlier this month, and is also credited with writing the play. In Monsoon's announcement, she called Escola a 'genius' and said the play was 'one of the best things I've ever seen.' 'Cole is easily the funniest person alive and I'm just lucky to be alive at the same time,' she added. 'Oh, Mary!' is a revisionist farce that looks at American history during the administration of Abraham Lincoln, exploring the curious dynamic between the president – who many posit was in the closet – and his unruly, alcoholic wife Mary Todd leading up to their fateful night out to the theater. Monsoon is set to perform in 'Oh, Mary!' from August 4 to September 27, following a run by Tituss Burgess. Escola originated the role when the show opened last summer and continued until January. Escola returned for a limited run in April, which concludes this weekend. In her time in the 'Drag Race' orbit, Monsoon was a popular figure whose theatrics, impeccable comic timing and biting humor often shined through, especially in the Snatch Game segments when she impersonated legends such as Edie Beale. Monsoon has also amassed an impressive theater resume, both on the Great White Way and off. She appeared in 'Chicago' and can currently be seen in 'Pirates! The Penzance Musical.' She also enjoyed a run as Audrey in 'Little Shop of Horrors' off-Broadway and regularly tours. She performs a beloved holiday show with her fellow 'Drag Race' alum BenDeLaCreme.
