Thousands of Uber and Bolt drivers strike on Valentine's Day
Workers will take action for six hours from 4pm on Friday with the backing of driver groups across the country, according to The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB).
The union said the strike action is in response to workers being forced by the tech companies to work 70 to 80-hour weeks with high car rents and poor job security. A union source told The Independent that they confidently expect thousands of drivers to take part.
The organisers said this was having ' a devastating financial, physical and mental impact on us and our families.'
They added this was an opportunity for drivers to stay united in the face of gig economy giants like Uber.
One driver, Helio Santos, started driving for Uber three and a half years ago so he could look after his baby son and two teenagers while his wife worked full time for the NHS.
He told The Independent: 'We have become slaves to the app', as he remains on duty for 60 to 70 hours a week completing day and night shifts for the company.
'It is scary. What we have right now is drivers bidding for the same trip with the lowest fare,' he added. 'We are bidding for it to make a living. There is no certainty.'
He added that while Uber claim to pay the national living wage, they ignored the running costs. To maintain his car, Helio spends between £350 and £400 on rent and electricity per week to make a minimum of £150 per day.
'£150 is nothing for a private hire driver', he said.
The Chair for the IWGB 's Private Hire Drivers Branch, Nader Awaad, said: 'Up and down the country, drivers whose lives have been torn apart by apps like Uber are saying the same thing - it's time for us to take back the wheel.'
He continued: 'As private hire drivers we offer a great service to the customers and form an essential part of the transport system. We deserve to be paid well and to have our jobs protected.
'Instead, industry profits have soared at our expense. The government and licensing authorities have abandoned us to the mercy of these companies.
'We are left with no choice but to come together and take action ourselves. This log-off on the 14th has reignited drivers' faith that by uniting we can transform this industry for the better.'
An Addison Lee spokesperson said: "We have a close working relationship with our drivers, which was further reinforced in our recent bi-annual driver satisfaction survey. We do not expect to see any disruption to volumes or service levels on February 14th.'
A Bolt spokesperson said: 'We recognise the vital role drivers play in keeping cities moving, and remain committed to ensuring our prices balance the earning needs of drivers with affordability for passengers.'
They added they were the 'only operator' to enable drivers to set their own minimum pricing and also take advantage of dynamic pricing, while drivers also received holiday pay and monetary supplements to ensure they earn at least a national living wage alongside a pension.
An Uber spokesperson said: "As workers, all Uber drivers are guaranteed to earn at least the national Living wage when taking trips, with Uber topping up their earnings if they ever fall below this level. The majority of Uber drivers can and do earn much more.
'Uber drivers have the freedom to work where and when they want and have access to industry leading rights such as holiday pay and a pension, as well as formal representation through GMB Union."
GMB, Uber's officially recognised trade union, are not taking part in this action.

Peterborough Uber drivers strike over pay and conditons
More than 50 Uber taxi drivers lined up at a city's train station as part of a strike against the company's pay and working operating across Peterborough gathered outside the train station and some at Maskew Avenue Retail Anwar, 30, a full-time Uber driver and one of the organisers, said drivers would be on strike for 48 hours until Sunday Uber spokesperson said it was working with a union to "improve the experience of driving with Uber". Demonstrations have previously been held elsewhere, including in Newcastle and Ahmed, 26, a Uber taxi driver who works nights, said the strike was a "necessary step" to try to improve working conditions."It is not sustainable," he said. "We can't work this way and have to do something."It is so challenging to get in touch with Uber. We are doing this strike to get or message across to them." 'Running on fumes' Arkash Khan said the Uber drivers in the city felt "undervalued" by the company. "We are driving 10 hours a day but after paying for fuel and insurance and maintenance, we are earning less than the minimum wage", he said."The drivers are running on fumes and we want Uber to put the prices up."He also criticised Peterborough City Council's licensing team. "Getting an appointment has been challenging, especially when drivers are looking to renew licences," he said. "But today, we are here to send our voices to Uber. We need change, and soon." Labour councillor Mohammed Jamil, deputy leader of Peterborough City Council, said: "The council's policies for vehicles and drivers are approved by our Licensing Committee and reflect the standards the authority wants to see in terms of vehicles and drivers operating in the city."A lowering of our standards could have negative effects, such as increasing driver and vehicle numbers, leading to capacity outstripping demand."An Uber spokesperson said: "All drivers on Uber are guaranteed at least the National Living Wage, holiday pay and a pension plan, as well as free sickness protection and access to free Open University courses. "This means drivers earn with greater security, helping them to plan for their futures while maintaining the flexibility that is a key part of why they choose to drive with Uber. "We continue to partner with the GMB union to improve the experience of driving with Uber." Follow Peterborough news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.

Secret White House spreadsheet ranks US companies based on loyalty to Trump
Donald Trump has drawn up a scorecard for corporate America, ranking companies based on their loyalty to his administration. The highly unusual list ranks 533 businesses and trade organisations based on their efforts to champion the US president's 'one big beautiful bill', according to reports. Companies that have fared well deployed a variety of tactics – often trumpeting the benefits of an individual policy, such as Uber's celebration of Mr Trump's 'no tax on tips' proposal. The scorecard, which Axios said will aid decision-making on corporate requests, comes as part of Mr Trump's 'America First' agenda and protectionist policies. The chart allegedly ranks enterprises' levels of support as either strong, moderate or low based on a series of factors. Actions that affect a company's rating are said to include social media posts, adverts, press releases, video testimonials, attendance at White House events and other engagements related to 'OB3' – the administration's nickname for the president's set-piece tax and spending legislation. According to Axios, businesses seen as 'good partners' on the White House list include DoorDash, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Uber, AT&T, Cisco, Airlines for America and the Steel Manufacturers Association. AT&T recently announced 'plans to more quickly build fiber infrastructure thanks to pro-investment policies in the one big beautiful bill act passed by Congress'. Meanwhile Airlines for America – which represents major US airlines including United and Delta – lauded the bill's $12.5bn (£9.2bn) investment in air traffic control. The spreadsheet is said to be an evolving document, to which businesses' support for other presidential initiatives can be added. The ranking 'helps us see who really goes out and helps vs those who just come in and pay lip service,' an official told the news outlet. 'If groups/companies want to start advocating more now for the tax bill or additional administration priorities, we will take that into account in our grading,' the official added. It is not clear which businesses rank low on the list but those likely to have taken a hit may include clean energy companies, who heavily criticised the bill's rollback of green incentives. Mr Trump has also clashed with Wall Street in recent weeks. The president this week hit out at David Solomon, the Goldman Sachs chief executive, saying the bank had been wrong to predict that imposing US tariffs would hurt the US economy.
