Kelsey Plum says she made a ‘bad joke' about Caitlin Clark's team at All-Star Game
'I made a really bad joke,' Plum said on Sue Bird's 'Bird's Eye View' podcast that dropped Friday.
Plum said she was trying to have fun with Team Clark at the All-Star Game in Indianapolis on July 19 when she said Clark's side didn't show up for that morning meeting to discuss collective bargaining agreement talks. The union and the WNBA are in the midst of negotiations, and all the players in the All-Star Game wore T-shirts that read, 'Pay Us What You Owe Us,' including Clark.
Plum said at the postgame news conference the players decided that morning to wear the shirts, but 'zero members of Team Clark were very present for that.'
There was especially a big blowback on social media toward Plum, who said her intention was to bring levity to a serious topic but misread the room.
'I was making a joke they were hungover even though our team nickname was 'Hungover,'' Plum said. 'I was like, 'At least we made it.' Obviously, we were all on the same page. We all wore the shirts. We're all unified. I think if anything I was more discouraged because I felt like (the comments) took away from the moment of what we were trying to do.'

Brewers' winning streak snapped in extras after 9th-inning comeback doesn't hold
CINCINNATI — Just when it looked like the Milwaukee Brewers couldn't lose, they did. Cincinnati Reds designated hitter Austin Hays hit a walk-off single to left field with bases loaded in the 10th inning for a 3-2 Reds victory, snapping the Brewers' 14-game winning streak and handing them their first loss since July 30. Advertisement For three games this weekend, the team with the fewest mistakes won. On Sunday, for the first time, that team was the Reds. After the Brewers came back from a seven-run deficit on Friday and avoided a loss Saturday with the help of an Elly De La Cruz error on what would've been a game-ending double play, the Brewers were unable to come up with yet another comeback. The Brewers had come from behind in eight of their victories during their winning streak. The Brewers entered the ninth inning down 1-0, but William Contreras hit a two-run home run off of Reds closer Emilio Pagán to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead. But an error by shortstop Brice Turang to start the ninth allowed the Reds to force extra innings, thanks to a Jose Trevino single that scored Will Benson. Milwaukee tried to bunt over ghost runner Andrew Vaughn to start the 10th inning, but Blake Perkins' attempt didn't travel far beyond home plate, allowing Trevino to pounce on it and throw out Andrew Vaughn at third base. Reds reliever Graham Ashcraft got a popup and a line-drive out to end the inning. Spencer Steer started the bottom of the 10th with a successful sacrifice bunt, which was followed by two intentional walks. Hays saw an 81 mph sweeper and drove it down the third-base line, and Milwaukee's streak was no longer. The Reds were the first on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Hays led off with a double and moved to third on Noelvi Marte's single. Trevino's long drive to right was caught by a leaping Brandon Lockridge in right field, but easily scored a tagging Hays for the game's first run. The lefty pitching duel lived up to expectations, with Reds All-Star starter Andrew Abbott throwing seven shutout innings. Abbott allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Jose Quintana allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Abbott's ERA fell to 2.28 on the season, and Quintana lowered his to 3.32. Advertisement After his go-ahead homer in the top of the ninth, Contreras did a nice job framing in the bottom of the inning for Grant Anderson. Contreras fooled home-plate umpire Mike Eastabrook on two strikes to Ke'Bryan Hayes, a 2-1 called strike that was low and outside, and a called third strike that was just off the plate for the second out of the inning. After a walk to Matt McLain to load the bases, Anderson got an infield popup by leadoff man TJ Friedl to send the game to extras for the second day in a row. By ending the Brewers' streak, the Reds were able to extend their streak of not being swept in 40 series this season. (Photo of Christian Yelich: Katie Stratman / Imagn Images) Spot the pattern. Are Braves Potential Landing Spot for Ketel Marte After 'Diva' Report?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Arizona Diamondbacks are turning heads around Major League Baseball. Months after signing second baseman Ketel Marte to a multi-year extension, the Diamondbacks are reportedly looking to trade him in the offseason, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 13: Ketel Marte #4 of the Arizona Diamondbacks flips his bat after hitting a three-run home run during the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on August... ARLINGTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 13: Ketel Marte #4 of the Arizona Diamondbacks flips his bat after hitting a three-run home run during the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on August 13, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. More"The worst-kept secret in the Arizona Diamondbacks organizationis out: They will listen to offers on All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte this winter, knowing that while Marte is extremely talented, he can be a diva in the clubhouse, agitating his teammates and coaching staff. His detractors are still angry that he took a day off the final week of last season when they were fighting for their playoff lives. "Though Marte's house in Arizona was robbed the night of the All-Star Game, he took a vacation after the break, leaving the D-backs seething. .... The D-backs won't trade their three-time All-Star and NLCS MVP who has $92.5 million left on his contract after this season without getting fair value in return, but they're also aware that he'll become a 10-and-5 player early next season that gives him full no-trade rights. Certainly, the phone lines will be open." Aside from the fact that Marte's behavior is new within the last few months, it appears Arizona wants to start over. Enter the Atlanta Braves as a possible landing spot for Marte. The Braves will likely be shopping Ozzie Albies in the offseason, which will create an opening at second base. While Marte's contract would increase payroll and he is older than Albies, adding the 31-year-old infielder would help the Braves turn things around after a disappointing season. Entering Sunday, Marte was slashing .298/.399/.558 for the Diamondbacks with 23 home runs and 56 RBI. His bat would provide a major upgrade for a Braves lineup that is searching for offensive help. Atlanta would need to play its cards right when discussing deals to acquire Marte and shop Albies as it needs to hold onto the power in the negotiations. General manager Alex Anthopoulos will have his hands full in that regard. However, if the Braves have a chance to acquire Marte, they should absolutely push to get the deal done. Caitlin Clark Makes Bold WNBA MVP Declaration After Fever-Sun
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Before the 2025 WNBA season even began, Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark was one of the betting favorites to win the award. The reigning Rookie of the Year got off to a hot start too, averaging 19 points, 9.3 assists, and 6.0 rebounds through her first four games before missing some time with a quadriceps injury. She picked up right where she left off after returning in mid-June with a 32-point outburst against the New York Liberty followed by a 20-point outing against the Connecticut Sun the following game, but injuries have limited Clark to just seven more appearances in Indiana's 23 games since, all but dashing the 23-year-old Iowa alum's chances of taking home the top honor in the league. But in Clark's absence, one of her teammates has not only filled her scoring void in Indiana's lineup but also seemingly taken her place in the MVP race. Mitchell finished with a game- and career-high 38 points along with six assists, two steals, and a rebound in the Fever's 99-93 overtime win, marking the biggest come-from-behind win in franchise history. Among those celebrating Mitchell's monster performance was Clark, who took to social media to make it known Mitchell has her vote for MVP. "MVP kels," Clark wrote on X. "KELSEY FREAKIN MITCHELL," Sophie Cunningham wrote on X. "Kelsey Mitchell isn't real," Sydney Colson also chimed in. Sunday was Mitchell's fourth 30-point game of the season, and it marked the 20th time in 35 games this season she scored 20 or more points. The Fever lost Cunningham to a knee injury in the second quarter, and the rest of the team struggled to mount any offense against the Sun for the first two-and-a-half quarters.
