Why Cecilia Zandalasini has been Valkyries' X-factor in postseason pursuit
Over the past three games as the starting small forward, Zandalasini has averaged 12.7 points, third on the team behind season-long starters Janelle Salaün and Tiffany Hayes. In those games, Zandalasini is shooting 44.8% and leading the team with 2.7 made 3-pointers per game. In the team's past three wins, she's averaging 16.3 points and hitting 52.6% from deep. In the past two victories alone, she has gone 7-for-14 from beyond the arc.
Zandalasini's game-winner in Atlanta on July 29 gave the Valkyries a needed lift after starting a five-game road trip with a 31-point loss to Connecticut. In another critical contest on Saturday, she scored 14 points in a win over Los Angeles. On Monday against the Sun, Zandalasini tallied 17 points, one off her career high.
'When she was available in the expansion draft, I jumped for joy. You don't understand how excited I was to get Cecilia,' head coach Natalie Nakase said. 'If you watch Ceci's shot, it's one of the most beautiful shots. She has a beautiful release. She never hesitates. She has confidence that's unreal.'
In the nine games since the injury to Thornton — whose averages of 14 points and seven rebounds per game are team highs — Zandalasini's scoring average (11 ppg) ranks behind only Salaün's 11.3. Zandalasini's 47.9% shooting also ranks second among players with at least five appearances in that span.
Zandalasini has long been known as a reliable 3-point shooter off the bench, and that had mostly been her role with Golden State until Thornton's injury.
After two seasons with Minnesota from 2017-18, she spent five years playing overseas and returned to the Lynx in 2024. Last season she ranked sixth in the league in 3-point percentage at 44.3% for the WNBA Finals runners-up.
'Ceci is one of the most steady players I think I've ever played with,' point guard Veronica Burton said. 'Just her ability to come out and be so unfazed, whether she's hit the last three 3s or missed the first three, she's just ready to take the next one. When she gets us going, it just again spaces the floor. You have to respect her.'
This season, not only is Zandalasini doing more, but more is being asked of her. According to analytics program Synergy, just 50.6% of her shots have been off a catch-and-shoot, compared to 69.2% last season with the Lynx.
She's also facing tighter defense, with 62.8% of her attempts coming against defenders, up from 55.6% last season. Nearly half of her shots this season (48.2%) have come off the dribble, a sharp rise from 30.8% a year ago in Minnesota.
'We want her reading defenses, that's when she's at her best,' assistant coach Kasib Powell told the Chronicle. 'We like putting her in positions where she can make those decisions.'
Zandalasini's 23.4 minutes per contest are the most in her career by a good margin. She missed time this year due to injuries, including two separate foot issues, and playing in EuroBasket in June, which prevented her from getting into a consistent rhythm.
The Valkyries are 5-9 with Zandalasini in the lineup, but 4-2 with her since June 25, when she's played her best this season. Her consistency will be key to their playoff push.
'She's always been a sniper,' Nakase said. 'I remember, because I had the scout, and she knocked down three 3s against us last year in Vegas. So she's always been like this.'

Well-traveled Liberty fall to well-rested Lynx, New York still searching for first win in season series
The New York Liberty were playing their third road game this week. The Minnesota Lynx were playing their first game this week. And it showed Saturday — well, only at first. The Liberty scored just 12 points in the first quarter, their fewest to open a game this year, and didn't make a single 3-pointer in the frame. Three minutes into the second quarter, the Lynx boasted a 15-point advantage. That's when Sandy Brondello's injury-riddled and battle-tested New York squad rallied, eventually taking a lead that it juggled throughout the second half. But the Liberty ultimately didn't have enough in the tank to hold off the top team in the league table, a Lynx group continuing to avenge its WNBA Finals defeat and now two victories away from matching the franchise single-season wins record it set last year. After starting a mere 2-of-13 from the field, including 1-of-6 from deep, Kayla McBride dropped a 29-foot 3 with 31.9 seconds remaining to effectively seal the deal. McBride, who uncharacteristically missed four free throws, made enough to help ice an 86-80 win at the charity stripe. New York (21-13), still stuck in a scrum for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, is now 0-3 against the Lynx this season after beating them in five games for the 2024 WNBA championship. Minnesota (28-5) improved to 17-1 at home and hasn't lost a game this month. During that stretch, the Lynx are 4-0 without the W's leading scorer in the lineup. Napheesa Collier, a top candidate for the league's MVP honor this year, was sidelined for the fourth game in a row as she continues to recover from a sprained right ankle. In her absence, fellow All-Star Courtney Williams stepped up with a season-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, plus five assists. "Honestly, we down Phee," Williams told CBS in her on-court postgame interview. "So, like I always say, somebody got to give a little bit more. We all got to give a little bit more. So when I'm feeling it, it's a problem." The Liberty were missing three key pieces of their frontcourt: Nyara Sabally, Isabelle Harrison and, most importantly, two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart. Stewart, currently nursing a knee injury, hasn't played since July 26. She's missed 10 consecutive games, and the Liberty are just 4-6 in that span. Despite not making a 3 in the first quarter, New York finished with 11 on the day. Five different Liberty players made a pair of triples, and they all scored in double figures. That group included Kennedy Burke and Marine Johannès, who added 11 and 12 points off the bench, respectively. Liberty center Jonquel Jones, last year's WNBA Finals MVP, led the team with 17 points and polished off a 16-0 New York run that started cutting into a double-digit, first-quarter deficit and then created a second-quarter lead. From that point forward, the Liberty and Lynx traded blows. While Williams carried an offensive load with her jumpshot, she and others consistently located Jesscia Shepard and Alanna Smith in the paint down the stretch. Those two combined for 31 points and 17 rebounds. "I think when I knock down a couple shots, that big got to step up," Williams told CBS. "And when they step up, I got my bigs that I know can finish down low." New York won't have to wait long for another chance at Minnesota. The Liberty will host the Lynx on Tuesday, the WNBA heavyweights' final regular-season matchup this year.

Patriots beat Vikings 20-12 as rookies Henderson and Chism each record another preseason TD
APTOPIX Patriots Vikings Football MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New England rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Efton Chism III each had another preseason touchdown, and the Patriots beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-12 on Saturday. Henderson, the second-round draft pick from national champion Ohio State who's been turning heads in training camp and tracking toward a prominent role in the backfield, rushed for 20 yards with an 8-yard score on four carries during a two-drive stint for the first-team offense. Henderson had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. The Patriots held a handful of projected starters out, including four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who's returning from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered halfway through his lone season with the Houston Texans. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye started against an all-backups Vikings defense and went 4 for 7 for 46 yards with a delay-of-game penalty and an overthrow that was nearly intercepted but dropped by Tavierre Thomas. Chism made another compelling case for a regular-season roster spot with six receptions from backup QB Joshua Dobbs for 71 yards and a score. He caught a short throw on third-and-9 from the 12 and broke six tackle attempts as he twisted and muscled his way into the end zone. With Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and veterans Kendrick Bourne and Mack Hollins on the Patriots' roster, there might be only one opening for a wide receiver. Chism, who was undrafted out of Eastern Washington, will certainly get a long look. He had a 12-yard touchdown catch last week. Vikings play it safe The two teams had two days of joint practices this week, providing plenty of valuable tests for players in situational drills in a controlled setting, and Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell was more than satisfied with the work. Not a single projected starter on either side of the ball suited up for Minnesota, and several key backups who are locks to make the team were given the afternoon off, too. New quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who led one 12-play drive last week, wore an earpiece on the sideline while Sam Howell started. Howell, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in April after the veteran backup market dried up, went 1 for 5 with an interception he forced off his back foot under pressure. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who has been the best of the backups in camp, went 15 for 27 for 156 yards while playing the whole second half. His final throw from the 13-yard line on the last play of the game was tipped and intercepted in the end zone by Kyle Dugger. Up next The Patriots finish the preseason at New York Giants on Thursday, when the Vikings play at the Tennessee Titans. ___ AP NFL: Solve the daily Crossword

Williams scores 26, McBride hits 3-pointer with 30.8 seconds left as Lynx beat Liberty 86-80
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Courtney Williams scored a season-high 26 points, Kayla McBride hit a deep 3-pointer with 30.8 seconds left and the Minnesota Lynx beat the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty 86-80 on Saturday. New York beat the Lynx 3-2 in the best-of-five 2024 WNBA Finals to win the franchise's first championship. Since then, Minnesota has won three straight against the Liberty. Minnesota (28-5) has won six in a row and 10 of 11 overall. DiJonnai Carrington won a jump ball against Natasha Cloud with 25.2 seconds left and the Liberty were forced to foul. McBride — who went into the game shooting 93.8% (75 of 80) from the line this season — hit two of four free throws before Jessica Shepard made two free throws to cap the scoring with 3.6 seconds left. McBride finished with 17 points and Jessica Shepard added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lynx. Alanna Smith finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Jonquel Jones led New York (21-13) with 17 points and Sabrina Ionescu had 13 points and 10 assists. Marine Johannès added 12 points and Kennedy Burke 11. The Lynx led 38-27 with two minutes left in the first half, but New York answered with a 16-0 run to close the second quarter and open the third. Jones capped the spurt with a three-point play about 1 1/2 minutes into the second half. Napheesa Collier (ankle) missed her fourth consecutive game for the Lynx. Collier, the frontrunner for the WNBA MVP, has missed seven games this season. Jonquel Jones missed five games in 2021, the most by any player to be named league MVP. Two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart (knee) missed her 10th straight game for the Liberty. The teams play again Tuesday at the Barclays Center in New York. ___ AP WNBA:
