Go behind the scenes of Apple's latest shot-on-iPhone movie

Digital Trends6 hours ago

Apple's latest effort to show off the potential of the iPhone camera comes in the form of Big Man, a 20-minute fictional film directed by Academy Award-winning director Aneil Karia and starring British music legend Stormzy.
Big Man (below) focuses on Tenzman (Stormzy), a jaded musician who finds warmth and a sense of purpose through an unexpected friendship with two boisterous teens.
Karia shot the movie entirely on an iPhone 16 Pro, a first for the director who in 2022 won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film for The Long Goodbye. Apple released Big Man on Wednesday, along with a behind-the-scenes video (top) showing how Karia used the iPhone to capture the movie's scenes.
'I've never shot an entire piece of narrative filmmaking on an iPhone before, and it's been a really invigorating process,' Karia said. 'iPhone is much smaller than the traditional cameras used for television, film, or music videos, and the lightness and flexibility that comes with that is boundless in a sense. I like trying to strive for an intimacy with characters, and sometimes a big camera is not particularly conducive for that.'
Big Man's director of photography, Stuart Bentley, said that with the iPhone, 'there's no reason you can't make an amazing film' — failing to mention the small matter of needing a clear creative vision, a compelling script, a talented director, a skilled camera operator, and an experienced editor, among other things. But we get what he means.
Highlighting the iPhone's various camera features, Bentley continued: 'You can use Cinematic mode for shallow depth of field, and it automatically pulls focus to follow the action. It's got an incredible dynamic range and can handle low light, and shooting with Apple ProRes Log gives you even more options in post.'
The slow-motion scenes in Big Man were captured in 4K 120 fps, while the iPhone camera's low-light capabilities allowed the team to shoot scenes outside at night as well as in dimly lit interiors.
It's not the first time that Apple has partnered with filmmakers to provide its iPhone technology and support creative projects.
The collaborations often involve working with well-known directors, production companies, and even major studios, as seen in projects like a Wallace & Gromit stop-motion film made with Aardman, and Apple's upcoming feature film F1: The Movie, which utilized a custom iPhone camera rig for authentic racing footage.
For the latest installment in Danny Boyle's 28 trilogy, the crew designed a special rig holding 20 iPhones to create a dramatic effect for a particular scene.
'There's an incredible shot in the second half [of 28 Years Later] where we use the [20-camera rig] … you'll know it when you see it,' Boyle said in a recent interview.

Jeremy Clarkson gives health update amid filming series five of Clarkson's Farm

Jeremy Clarkson has shared a health update amid filming the next series of Clarkson's Farm. The former Top Gear presenter, 65, has recently been back on screens with the fourth series of his hit Amazon show - and a fifth series is now underway filming. But he shared in his latest The Sunday Times column, which was a car review, that he's been having health issues. 'I have a trapped nerve in my back at the moment," he said. "It's fine if I'm not doing anything, but in the [Mercedes-Benz] G 580, not doing anything is impossible because it pitches and yaws and rolls all the time, and you never have any idea what it's going to do next. "So you can't ever brace yourself." It's not the only health update Clarkson has recently given, he recently shared a candid health update after a recent prostate examination. The farmer shared his experiences of the screening, as he revealed he has had too many friends 'go down' with prostate cancer. It comes a year after the star was just days from death before he underwent heart surgery to clear blocked arteries. Writing in his weekly column for The Sunday Times, Mr Clarkson said his late doctor rarely informed him of any medical issues. According to Clarkson, the medic 'was too busy name-dropping' his other celebrity clients, such as singer Rita Ora, while undergoing checks. The 65-year-old, who recently claimed to have lost about a stone and a half after using the Mounjaro weight-loss jab, added that he now pays for his own medicals 'every couple of years'. He then began talking about having a prostate exam, which involves a doctor inserting a finger into the rectum. Clarkson said that he does not mind the process as 'we do need to know this stuff', as prostate cancer kills around 9,000 men in England every year. He then reflected on unnamed friends who have been struck with the most common type of cancer in Britain. Clarkson wrote: 'I've had too many friends go down with prostate cancer, and all it takes to get on top of the situation early is a moment or two of being a bit cross-eyed. 'You get the all-clear and the doc goes home happy. What's not to like? I went home very happy because the initial probing and photographing suggests all is well. 'And let me tell you, nothing makes you feel better than knowing for sure you're not going to drop dead tomorrow morning.'

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey share tender kiss at ‘Jurassic World Rebirth' premiere in London

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey shared a friendly smooch at the 'Jurassic World Rebirth' premiere. The co-stars were seen greeting each other with a warm hug and an adorable kiss on the red carpet at the screening of their film at London's Odeon Luxe Leicester Square Cinema Tuesday. Johansson, 40, grabbed the 'Bridgerton' actor's face and pulled him in close to press her pout against his. Bailey, 37, appeared excited over the lock-lipping interaction and wrapped his arms around her back to give her a big embrace. They both smiled exuberantly while staring into each other's eyes. ScarJo stunned in a sparkling sequin and bead-adorned pink strapless gown with a corseted bodice by Vivienne Westwood. The 'Jojo Rabbit' actress — who was outfitted for the event by her stylist Kate Young — also wore her blond hair in old Hollywood waves. The 'Wicked' star was dressed far more casually in a brown blazer layered over a blue denim collared shirt and white pants. He shielded his face in sunglasses and a two-tone baseball cap. Despite their PDA-packed moment at the starry event, where attendees included cast members Rupert Friend and Mahershala Ali, they were clearly just being playful. Johansson has been married to Colin Jost, 42, since 2020 and they share two kids: Rose, 10, and Cosmo, 3. Bailey, for his part, is seemingly off the market as he confirmed in 2023 that he was seeing 'a lovely man.' However, he has yet to reveal the name of his partner. 'It's not secret, but it's private,' he told the Evening Standard of his relationship at the time. 'Having a private life is, for me, completely critical. I don't know if I would be able to be as confident to speak out on other things if I felt that my whole life was up for grabs.' While there was no sexual chemistry between the 'Nanny Diaries' star and Bailey, fans still celebrated their loved-up exchange on social media. 'Jonathan Bailey being so loved. Scarlett we get it you adore him ,' one person wrote on X, adding, 'This new collaboration and friendship warms my heart.' 'So cute!' a second fan exclaimed. 'SCARLETT HOW DOES IT FEEL TO LIVE MY DREAM,' a third social media user wrote in all caps, lusting over Bailey. The sci-fi movie hits theaters July 2.

Jodie Comer says being led by Danny Boyle in 28 Years Later was a ‘proper dream'

Jodie Comer has said being led by director Danny Boyle on the set of 28 Years Later was a 'proper dream'. Comer, who is best known for playing the antagonist Villanelle in the hit BBC series Killing Eve, was speaking at the 28 Years Later world premiere in Leicester Square on Wednesday evening. 28 Years Later is set in the same world as the 2002 apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later, which saw Cillian Murphy play a bicycle courier who awakes from a coma to discover the accidental release of a highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus has caused the breakdown of society. The new instalment follows on almost three decades since the virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, where some have found a way to exist amid the infected despite an enforced quarantine. When one of the group leaves the gated island they are residing on for a mission to the mainland, they discover secrets and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well. Comer features in the film alongside Ralph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Comer said on Wednesday: 'I was honoured when I got this script through. 'And you know, with the opportunity to sit down with Danny, who's a filmmaker who I've admired for a very long time, and to be kind of led by him and be on one of his sets is a proper dream.' She added that Boyle leads a 'calm, playful, fun' set. 28 Years Later will be screened in cinemas from Friday.
