
Car dealers in China's Yangtze delta region warn of 'severe challenges'
Four dealer associations based in the Yangtze River Delta encompassing Shanghai city and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui, issued a joint letter on their WeChat accounts on Monday, going public with the pressures they face.
Most automakers sell their vehicles in China via dealerships, and the Delta region accounted for 23% of domestic car sales in 2024.
"Car dealers in the Yangtze River Delta region face severe challenges such as high inventory, disorderly market competition and increased risk of capital chain rupture," said the letter that was addressed to "all automakers".
"Some automakers have forced dealers to sell new cars at prices below cost," they added without naming any firms, saying such a strategy could violate China's competition laws.
Dealer associations in the provinces of Henan and Jiangsu issued similar letters last week, while suppliers and dealers have both asked carmakers to pay them more promptly.
The complaints indicate that Chinese automakers are continuing a years-long price war despite orders from regulators to stop as the strategy eats into the industry's profitability and financial health.
The four dealer associations also said that inventories were above healthy levels. A gradual suspension in car loans in the region since June has compounded the problem leaving consumers who thought they had financing unable to pick up their cars, they added.
The dealers made a number of suggestions, including that carmakers should allow them to suggest a reasonable inventory limit and adjust sales targets to better recognise the capacity of the regional market.
China's legislature passed amendments to the anti-unfair competition law last week. The revised law strengthens rules against forced below-cost pricing and will come into effect in October.

The EU urges China to lift 'unjustified' sanctions on Lithuanian banks
The European Union on Thursday called on China to revoke sanctions imposed on two Lithuanian banks, arguing there is no justification for them. Beijing announced the measures this week against Urbo Bank and Mano Bank in retaliation for EU penalties on two Chinese lenders. The Lithuanian banks do not operate in China, giving Beijing's move a largely symbolic character. Nonetheless, the tit-for-tat measures underscore deepening tensions between the EU and China over Beijing's support for Russia in its war on Ukraine. In this case, China targeted banks from an EU member with whom diplomatic ties have been particularly strained due to Lithuania's relationship with Taiwan. At EU headquarters in Brussels, European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill defended the bloc's sanctions on Chinese banks. China 'must respect the problems we have identified,' Gill said. 'Our sanctions are the centerpiece of our efforts to minimize the effectiveness of the Russian war machine.' He said the Commission does not believe that the Chinese countermeasures 'have any justification or are evidence based, and therefore we call on China to remove them even now.' The EU's latest Russia sanctions package, adopted in July and effective August 9, included Heihe Rural Commercial Bank and Heilongjiang Suifenhe Rural Commercial Bank. The banks and the government in Lithuania said the sanctions were not expected but would likely have little practical impact. 'According to the preliminary assessment, this decision will not have a significant impact on either the country's financial system or the activities of the banks themselves, since the business models of the mentioned banks are focused on the local market,' the Bank of Lithuania said on Wednesday in a statement. Marius Arlauskas, the head of administration of Urbo Bank, said: 'Since we do not have any business partnerships with Chinese individuals or legal entities, the sanctions will have no impact on the activities of Urbo Bank and the implementation of prudential regulations." The Baltic nation has drawn China's ire for years. Beijing expelled Lithuania's ambassador in 2021 in response to Lithuania allowing Taiwan to open a liaison office in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital. Breakingviews - Adyen's US-China shock flags wider tariff threat
LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters Breakingviews) - One of Europe's most richly valued fintech giants just got a rude tariff awakening. As much as $10 billion was initially wiped off Adyen's ( opens new tab $54 billion market value on Thursday after the Dutch payments group cut its 2025 sales forecast, blaming weaker volumes from big Chinese merchants selling to U.S. customers. But while its issues have a specific cause, similar hits from U.S. tariffs will affect other companies far and wide. On the face of it, Adyen's selloff seems disproportionate. Its first-half sales still rose 20%, and the annual guidance change is that this year's growth will now likely match the 2024 pace of 23% rather than accelerate. Yet with the stock trading at around 41 times 2025 earnings, according to analyst forecasts compiled by Visible Alpha, sky-high expectations left little margin for error. Either way, the culprit is clear. The suspension of the de minimis rule, which allowed goods under $800 to enter the U.S. tariff-free, weighed particularly on Adyen's largest online retail merchants in China, according to a person familiar with the situation. U.S. President Donald Trump had scrapped, opens new tab the de minimis exemption for China in May, hitting PDD's (PDD.O), opens new tab Temu and Shein, which both ship from the People's Republic. Daily U.S. users of Temu dropped, opens new tab 52% in May compared to March, while Shein's fell 25%, Sensor Tower data shows. Because Adyen makes money from online retailers by charging transaction-based fees, it felt the pain too - even though the company has not disclosed whether either Temu or Shein are big clients. Investors may hope that Adyen's issues are isolated and specific to the payments industry. Still, in August Trump extended the de minimis suspension to all countries, making transshipment harder. And broad-based tariffs that now mean an U.S. effective tariff rate of 19%, its highest since 1933. Given the de minimis rules were a well-understood and specific problem, it's a surprise that the market didn't see them coming and price Adyen's shares accordingly. That doesn't say much for companies in other sectors' chances of similar results-day lurches in future. Trump's promised tariffs on areas like pharmaceuticals remain unknown, and other ones are constantly shifting as he changes his mind.
