'These are Porter's first routes outside of our longtime presence throughout Canada and the U.S., and we're starting off in a big way by introducing five distinctly different destinations,' said Kevin Jackson, president, Porter Airlines. 'This is a significant development for anyone who wants to fly with Porter to more places and experience our award-winning service that focuses on making flying enjoyable for economy travellers. Recognizing that many passengers prefer Porter's approach to economy travel, we have seen other Canadian airlines mimic our unique service in other regions where we already fly, such as by adding free beer and wine, and we anticipate that our competitors will do it again as we enter new sun destinations. But our loyal passengers know that the feeling of flying Porter can't be matched. It's intangible elements, like our caring people and generous service, that continue setting us apart. That's why people love Porter, and why they are going to enjoy flying with us to the sun.'

Enbridge says a new Alberta-B.C. pipeline would require specific conditions, including legislative change
Canada's biggest crude oil shipper says a lot needs to happen before it would propose a new pipeline to the West Coast. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she wants to see a pipeline running from her province to the Port of Prince Rupert, B.C., so that more oilsands crude can be exported to Asia by tanker. She told a news conference Tuesday that the province has been in 'active conversations' with pipeline companies and is 'pretty close' to having a one or more come forward with a plan. Smith has said the West Coast pipeline she envisions would test the Liberal federal government's new process to review projects deemed in the national interest within two years. Enbridge Inc. ENB-T, which has a massive pipeline network spanning Canada and the United States, says it will always assess market-diversifying projects, provided there is a demand from the producers it serves. It says in a statement that any new project would require careful consideration and real provincial and federal legislative change around carbon policies, regulatory timelines and Indigenous participation. 'We will be there to build what is needed for our shippers, for Alberta and for Canada – that's our job, our mission as a company – but only when the conditions make sense and the right framework is in place,' Enbridge said. Gary Mason: B.C. and Alberta are about to renew old hostilities. It could get ugly The CEO of federally owned pipeline operator Trans Mountain Corp. told reporters earlier this month that his company is among those Smith has spoken to about spearheading a new pipeline. But Mark Maki said 'optimizing the existing kit' is a priority over building something new for now. Trans Mountain flows to the B.C. Lower Mainland and is currently the only way Alberta producers can meaningfully access Asia-Pacific markets. South Bow Corp. SOBO-T, which operates the Keystone pipeline connecting Alberta crude to refineries in the U.S. Midwest and Gulf Coast, said in a statement it appreciates provincial and federal recognition of the need for increased pipeline capacity. 'South Bow carefully evaluates all opportunities, especially those that complement our current assets and strengthen our existing corridor.'

Ikea's offer of free kids' meals 5 days a week not coming to Canada
An Ikea store is seen in Dartmouth, N.S. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Andrew Vaughan A promotion billed by Ikea as an effort to reduce customers' 'cost-of-living pressures' is not coming to Canada – at least not as initially billed. Ikea announced Wednesday it was offering half-price adult meals and free kids meals Monday through Friday in markets around the world. The news release listed Canada as among the 14 countries involved. Yet in an email Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for Ikea Canada told that a portion of the news release was 'incorrect for Canada.' Instead, only Canadian customers who are members of the store's reward program, known as Ikea Family Members, will be able to get 50 per cent off during the week, with the caveats that this deal applies to 'select main dishes' only and is 'while supplies last,' Ikea's Alicia Carroll said in an email. Kids' meals are free, but only on Wednesdays with the purchase of an adult meal. This promotion runs July 10 through August. Ikea and its parent company, Ingka, billed the discount as a way to 'help people stretch their budgets.' But a food distribution and policy expert said the public-relations strategy comes 'probably a year or two too late.' 'If you look at the G7 (countries) right now, their food inflation is under four per cent. Canada is at 3.4, which is slightly above average,' Dalhousie University's Sylvain Charlebois said in a phone interview with Wednesday from Brazil. 'I think the message would have resonated even more two years ago when people were actually hurting. Right now, people are just coping, and they're accepting that food prices are going to remain high, but they've actually adjusted, they've made adjustments to their budgets accordingly.' Charlebois said it was likely a move to recruit new customers and encourage more frequent visits for existing clientele. While customers might only need furniture once a year or every few years, they do need to eat, so a food-based promotion is a way to bring in shoppers who aren't currently looking for furniture. 'If you can use food as bait and get people in more often, and generate more traffic, that's powerful,' Charlebois said, adding that chances are that once a customer is in the store they'll buy something, even if just smaller impulse items.

Canada isn't looking to join EU, Carney says, but still wants closer ties
Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is "looking for a closer partnership" with the European Union — but not to become a member. While speaking from the NATO summit in the Netherlands — where he announced Canada's promise to spend five per cent of gross domestic product on defence by 2035 — Carney was asked whether he has given any thought to trying to join the bloc of European nations. "The short answer is no," he said. "That's not the intent. That's not the pathway we're on." WATCH | No plans for EU membership, says Carney: No plans for Canada to seek EU membership, Carney says 6 hours ago Duration 2:21 Prime Minister Mark Carney, asked Wednesday if there were any discussion about Canada possibly joining the European Union, said his intent is to build stronger relations with the EU and become a closer partner with the bloc — not a member. "We co-operate much more clearly and broadly to our mutual benefit," he said. "Not as a member, but along that continuum." Defence partnership These comments come days after Carney took steps to draw Canada closer to Europe. On Monday, he signed a strategic defence and security partnership with the EU — seen as a move toward making Canada less reliant on the United States. A joint EU/Canada statement says the two parties agreed to a "new ambitious and comprehensive partnership" to "promote shared prosperity, democratic values, peace and security" that goes well beyond security co-operation. To do that, the statement says, Canada and the EU launched a process that "will move Canada and the EU closer together" on a number of fronts such as trade, supply chains, aligning regulations, artificial intelligence, climate change, justice and international crisis response on top of security and defence. From the NATO summit, Carney reiterated some of those values that he says make Canada "the most European of non-European nations" — a line he has repeated since becoming prime minister. He highlighted Canada and the EU's shared values of "liberty" and "democracy" as well as the importance the two parties put on "solidarity" and "sustainability." First trip as PM The prime minister made his desire to work more closely with Europe clear from the start of his mandate. Just days after being sworn into office, Carney headed on his first international trip to France and the United Kingdom. Canada must strengthen ties with reliable allies like France, Carney says 3 months ago Duration 2:53 Prime Minister Mark Carney, appearing alongside French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, said Canada and France must strengthen their ties, adding that 'Canada is a reliable, trustworthy and strong partner of France.' Before a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron during that trip in March, Carney said in French that "it is more important than ever for Canada to strengthen its ties with its reliable allies, such as France." He said France "shares our values and lives them through action, during this age of economic and geopolitical crisis." "We are receiving you and welcoming you as a friend with great joy," Macron said of Canada during Carney's visit, highlighting both countries' ambitions for the "fair trade and protection of the planet." That trip — meant to seek support from two of Canada's oldest allies — came as U.S. President Donald Trump was continuing to attack Canada's sovereignty and economy. The president had already imposed tariffs on some Canadian products and was threatening more — all while repeatedly stating his desire for Canada to become the 51st state. The two countries are currently in negotiations to remove tariffs and counter-tariffs.
