2 killed as deadly fire rips through Durban informal settlement

The Citizen19-07-2025
A devastating fire tore through Durban's Kennedy Road informal settlement in the early hours of Saturday, claiming the lives of a woman in her 30s and a one-year-old baby.
The Witness reports that the deadly blaze comes barely a month after another inferno destroyed 40 shacks in the same settlement.
At this stage, the cause of the fire that destroyed over 100 shacks remains unknown.
Resident and community leader Vusi Doncabe said he was woken up by the noise from the neighbours and when he walked out to check what was happening, the fire was too close to his own shack to save his belongings.
'I'm left with nothing. I could not throw out any of my belongings because the fire was too close to my shack when I woke up,' said Doncabe.
I was in a state of panic and in fact everyone was in that state because the fire was uncontrollable. When the fire fighters and emergency services arrived, the blaze had done the damage.
He said the one-year-old baby belonged to another woman who had left her in the care of the friend for the night.
'People are saying the baby was left with the friend who died in the same shack they were sleeping in. It is not clear where the baby's mother was,' he said.
Relief organisation, Gift of the Givers said they had responded and provided assistance to the affected residents.
Community liaison officer Bilaal Jeewa said about 120 people, including children were left homeless. He said in the interim they provided the victims with beanies and blankets, and meals will be provided.
'The eThekwini disaster management is doing the assessment, and once all is done, we will see what further assistance we can provide for the affected families. Obviously other NGOs will also lend a hand to assist the affected.'
'We estimate about 80 to 100 shacks have burnt down. Thus far, we have provided the people with teabags, bread, peanut butter, the beanies etc, because it was cold. It was raining but now it's cold,' said Jeewa.

Committee slams poor enforcement of prison overcrowding laws

The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services has expressed concern over the low success rate of legislation aimed at reducing overcrowding in the country's correctional facilities. This follows a briefing from the Department of Correctional Services on the implementation of Section 49G of the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 and Section 62F of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977. Both sections aim to ease pressure on the country's overburdened correctional system. Section 49G states that a remand detainee may not be held for more than two years without the matter being brought before the relevant court. The head of the remand detention centre must refer such a case to court at least three months before the two-year period lapses to give the court time to consider it. If the detainee remains in custody, further submissions must be made each year. Section 62F allows for the placement of awaiting-trial detainees under the supervision of a correctional official as a bail condition. During a briefing on Friday, the committee heard that the success rate under Section 49G for the 2022/23 financial year was just 1.25% of 12 283 court referrals nationally. The Eastern Cape and Western Cape recorded a 0% success rate. In 2023/24, the Eastern Cape again reported 0%. In 2024/25, only one of 142 court referrals was successful, while two were successful in the current financial year. 'The committee also heard that approximately 40% of the total sentenced offender population are serving sentences above 15 years, including life sentences. Lifers will typically remain incarcerated for longer periods and are sentenced or convicted of serious crimes. This means that bed spaces will not become readily available, which places more pressure on already overcrowded correctional facilities,' said committee chairperson Kgomotso Anthea Ramolobeng. – Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Hefty sentence for Mpumalanga man who killed girlfriend in front of their children

Hefty sentence for Mpumalanga man who killed girlfriend in front of their children The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend. According to Highvelder, the crime, fuelled by accusations of cheating, unfolded in the presence of their two minor children, aged three and six. The man, who lived with his girlfriend and their children in eMvelo (previously Amsterdam), pleaded guilty and was convicted of premeditated murder. The incident occurred on June 6, 2024. The court heard that they were at home when the girlfriend received a phone call from an unknown person. After the call, he questioned her about the caller. Unsatisfied with her response and suspecting an affair, an argument broke out and escalated into violence. He then fatally stabbed her in the neck with a knife. The victim died instantly, and the accused was arrested two days later. 'In aggravation of the sentence, state Adv Kedibone Mthimkhulu argued that the accused's plea was a mitigating factor, emphasising the brutality of slitting the throat of the deceased as inhumane,' says NPA provincial spokesperson Monica Nyuswa. The court was presented with a post-mortem report confirming the woman died from an anterior neck wound and a photo album showing the grim crime scene. Mthimkhulu also submitted a victim impact statement compiled by the deceased's daughter describing the financial, psychological and emotional trauma she has suffered since her mother's death. BT Academy coaches resign after Spain fiasco

BT Academy coaches Jesse Julius, Clayton Levendal, Keeno Damons and Jayvin Chrisholm have resigned after their harrowing experience being stranded in Spain without return flight tickets. Image: Facebook The soccer coaches of BT Academy, who were praised for their performance at a tournament in Spain and for supporting the players after they were left stranded without return flights, have officially resigned from the academy. A group of 38, including an under-14 team, an under-19 team, and a girls team, travelled to Spain to participate in the Donosti Cup 2025. The teams performed well and the trip went smoothly, until the final day. When it was time to return home, they discovered that their return flights had not been booked by the organisers, despite each person having paid R50 000 for what was meant to be an all-expenses-paid trip. In a statement reflecting on the ordeal, the four coaches wrote: 'To Brandon Timmy: we are nothing like you. You tried to break us. You failed to pay us. You abandoned us. But in the end, all you did was bring us closer together. We are coaches with integrity, honour, principles, and honesty. The very things you lack. "The brotherhood you tried to destroy is now stronger than ever: an unshakable force of unity forged through adversity. We won the hearts of the nation not through deception or silence, but through our courage to do what you didn't have the backbone to do - stand up, speak out, and protect the children and families you left behind. 'We are emotionally scarred, yes, but we are not broken. And we will not fail the children, the parents, or the people who believed in us, the way you failed them all.' Video Player is loading. 'We write to you as the coaches of the former BT Academy, not just to thank you, but to honour the nation that stood up when Brandon Timmy turned away. When we were left stranded in a foreign country, abandoned, unpaid, and emotionally broken, it wasn't Brandon Timmy that came to our rescue. It was you. The people of South Africa, and even strangers from across the globe, who opened their hearts, their hands, and their homes to bring us back. "From those who gave despite having little, to those who sent messages of hope and solidarity every day. You carried us when we were at our lowest. Because of the generous, fearless spirit of South Africans and our global allies, we rise, not with anger, but with resolve, dignity, and truth. This is not the end.' Soccer coach Keeno Damons, who had been with BT Academy for three years, confirmed they had all resigned and submitted formal resignation letters. 'You can't work for someone you can't trust. The fact that he did what he did to all of us, the coaches, the players and the parents. Reality is kicking in for me. Brandon, Jayvin and I had a good relationship. To just throw that away is not easy for me. I have so many questions. What was going through his mind when he did this? It's heartbreaking. I feel betrayed,' he said. The sister of one of the coaches who was allegedly dismissed by BT Academy while in Portugal for speaking out about what was happening, said he is still owed over R70 000. 'It all started when they landed in Spain, there was no transport. They were stuck at the airport for a while. Jesse found transport to take them to the (accommodation); he paid R70 000 and BT paid R40 000,' she said. She added that, along with the other coaches, her brother had also contributed towards food for the group, but he was yet to be reimbursed. 'I tried my best to keep them in good spirits. I'm ecstatic that he is back, these past few days felt like months. It still feels so unreal.' BT Academy did not respond to requests for comment by deadline. Cape Times
