Army conducts joint flood relief exercise in Pune ahead of monsoon

Time of India24-05-2025

Pune: Indian Army troops conducted a two-day joint exercise with multiple agencies to respond to flood relief operations during the forthcoming monsoon season in the city.
The exercise, 'Megh Rahat', was conducted at the Aundh military station to forge strategy and enhance coordination among various agencies, including district administration, to operate effectively and quickly in times of need.
Last year, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) called army teams to rescue flood-affected citizens in the Anandnagar areas after river water entered housing societies. Over 100 citizens were rescued by the army troops in the locality.
"Through this joint training, the stakeholders were able to share their expertise, enhance their response capabilities, and develop a unified approach to disaster management," said the officials.
"Having a collective strategy and understanding the strength of each agency is crucial when it comes to disaster relief operations. A little confusion can affect the overall outcome of these operations. Therefore, joint work is necessary for the smooth execution of relief operations," added another official.

Indian Army honours families of Kargil bravehearts

New Delhi, June 10 (UNI) As part of a series of events spanning nearly one and a half months to commemorate the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Army on Tuesday honoured the families of 65 bravehearts, including Captain Vijayant Thapar (Vir Chakra), by visiting their homes and paying tribute to their supreme sacrifice during the war. Marking the solemn occasion, the Army stated that this initiative is a heartfelt tribute to the families of those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. By personally visiting the homes of the martyrs, the Army aims to remind citizens of the unmatched courage and devotion displayed by these valiant soldiers in service of the nation. The Army said that army officers visited Captain Thapar's residence in Noida and met his parents and honoured them by giving a letter of thanks and a memento. Army officers also honoured the families of more than 60 other bravehearts across various parts of the country. This included the wife of Rifleman Anusuya Prasad (Vir Chakra) in Delhi, the wife of Havildar Basti Ram in Jaipur, the parents of Lance Naik Gurmel Singh in Kurukshetra, the wife of Naik Anand Singh in Vaishali Nagar, Rajasthan, and the family of Havildar Hari Om (Sena Medal) in Dehradun. On the occasion, the Army expressed its deep respect and solidarity with the families, stating, 'It is our duty and sentiment to assure them that the sacrifice of our brave soldiers has not been in vain. The families of our martyrs are not alone — the Indian Army is their family, and we stand with them always.' The Army's gesture has moved the families emotionally, reinforcing the message that the nation continues to honour and remember its heroes with pride and gratitude. These commemorative activities will continue until Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, a day etched in the memory of the nation. It marks the successful culmination of Operation Vijay in 1999, when the Indian armed forces recaptured key positions in Kargil that had been occupied by Pakistani intruders. Observed every year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is a tribute to the indomitable spirit, courage, and sacrifice of India's soldiers who defend the country's borders with unwavering dedication. UNI RBE PRS

Mortal remains of soldier killed in Sikkim landslide flown to home in Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep [India], June 9 (ANI): The mortal remains of Sepoy Sainudheen PK, who was killed during the devastating landslide at Chatten, North Sikkim were flown to his home in Androth, Lakshadweep, an official statement from the Army said. The mortal remains were recovered on June 8 after eight days of search efforts by the Army. 'His final journey--traversing nearly 2,500 kilometres from Chatten in North Sikkim to his native island of Androth in Lakshadweep--was a solemn and dignified tribute to a life dedicated to the nation. This long and logistically complex repatriation was made possible through a coordinated tri-services operation involving the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, supported ably by the local administration,' the army's statement read. Army Aviation helicopters and Indian Air Force aircraft, including the C-295, were employed for this effort, ensuring timely and seamless transportation across multiple legs of the journey. A ceremonial wreath-laying tribute was conducted with full military honours at Bengdubi Military Station on June 8, marking the Indian Army's profound respect. At Androth, the Indian Navy rendered a Guard of Honour, reaffirming the sanctity of soldierly sacrifice, according to the statement. 'Sepoy Sainudheen PK embodied the finest traditions of the Indian Army--quiet professionalism, absolute integrity, and unmatched dedication. Whether in Siachen or Sikkim, he served with a quiet courage that inspired all ranks. His sacrifice is a reminder that true valour lies in selfless service even in the face of unseen dangers. We salute a soldier, a comrade and a son of India whose memory will forever guide us,' said the soldier's commanding officer. Born on 20 December 1991 in Androth, Lakshadweep, Sepoy Sainudheen joined the Indian Army on 24 March 2012. Over the past 13 years, he served with honour and distinction across some of the harshest operational terrains, including the forbidding heights of the Siachen Glacier, the Army said. Incessant rainfall and a cloudburst in northern Sikkim on the night of May 30-31 triggered widespread devastation, severely damaging critical roads and bridges. A week ago, atleast 6 people went missing and 3 army personnel lost their lives in North Sikkim's Chaten area. (ANI)
