How to watch the USWNT vs. Ireland in Thursday's international friendly
The world's top-ranked women's soccer national team gets some well-earned adulation this week. The Americans have two home friendlies against the Republic of Ireland, with a Thursday opener in Commerce City, Colo., followed by a Sunday finale in Cincinnati. The USWNT is a perfect 15-0 against the Irish. This week, several players are in line for their first international caps.

Thursday's action takes place on the home pitch of MLS' Colorado Rapids. This marks the ninth USWNT friendly at DSG Park. Cumulatively, USA has outscored its opponent at the high-altitude venue by a score of 27-9.
Coach Emma Hayes will use this two-match set to experiment with new personnel. She's giving her European-based players some rest, due to their extensive schedule across 10 or more months, while calling up some rising NWSL talents for international looks. Standout defender and Chelsea staple Naomi Girma is expected to give it a go, though, after recently making her first appearance for the national team in 2025.
Midfielder Rose Lavelle is also making a return from injury. She missed the first half of the year with ankle trouble. The Cincinnati-born World Cup winner and gold medalist will be welcomed with hometown love on Sunday.
The four international newcomers are midfielder Sam Meza (Seattle Reign FC) and a trio of defenders in Jordyn Bugg (Seattle), Lilly Reale (Gotham FC) and Izzy Rodriguez (Kansas City Current).
Ireland is coached by Carla Ward, who was a member of Hayes' staff during the USWNT gold effort in Paris. The Irish side, ranked 25th in the world, centers around Women's Super League star keeper Courtney Brosnan. Though she plays for Everton and reps the Republic of Ireland, Brosnan was actually born in New Jersey and played collegiately at Syracuse. Elsewhere on the roster is North Carolina Courage midfielder Denise O'Sullivan, who has 21 goals in 125 caps.
2015: 'Abby Wambach scored twice as the United States defeated Ireland, 3-0, on Sunday in an exhibition match in preparation for the Women's World Cup. A goal by defender Julie Johnston extended her scoring streak to three straight matches. It was the fifth straight shutout for the Americans, and it was Hope Solo's 83rd in her career with the United States. Wambach added to her career scoring record of 180 goals. Sunday's match was her 44th with multiple goals.'

2003: 'Julie Foudy had a goal and two assists, and Abby Wambach scored her first two goals of the season to lead the United States to a 5-0 victory over Ireland last night in an exhibition match in Salt Lake City. Mia Hamm, who came in as a substitute in the second half, also scored for the United States, which will have three more tuneups before the World Cup this fall. Heather O'Reilly also scored.'

This Date in Baseball - Ryan Howard is the fastest player to hit 100 HRs, doing so in his 325th game
June 27 1917 — Catcher Hank Gowdy of the Braves became the first major league player to enter military service in World War I. 1939 — The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Braves played a 23-inning, 2-2 tie. Whit Wyatt pitched the first 16 innings for the Dodgers. Both clubs played a 26-inning tie in 1920 at the same Braves Field. 1958 — Billy Pierce of the Chicago White Sox retired 26 straight Washington batters before pinch-hitter Ed Fitzgerald hit a double just inside the right-field line for the only hit. Pierce then struck out Albie Pearson on three pitches and beat the Senators 3-0. 1973 — David Clyde, a $125,000, 18-year-old bonus baby with the Rangers, pitched five innings, struck out eight and allowed one hit in his first major league start. Texas beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 before 35,698 fans — the Rangers' first home sellout at Arlington Stadium. 1980 — The Los Angeles Dodgers' Jerry Reuss pitched a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants in an 8-0 victory at Candlestick Park. The only player to reach base was Jack Clark in the first inning on a throwing error by shortstop Bill Russell. 1986 — San Francisco rookie Robby Thompson set a major league record when he was caught stealing four times in the Giants' 7-6, 12-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Catcher Bo Diaz threw out Thompson in the fourth, sixth, ninth and 11th innings. 1993 — Anthony Young of the New York Mets set a major league record by losing his 24th straight decision, 5-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals. 1999 — Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 27th homer and robbed Juan Gonzalez of a three-run shot with a spectacular over-the-fence catch as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 in the final game at the Kingdome. 2003 — Boston set a major league record by scoring 10 runs before the first out. The 50-minute, 91-pitch first inning came during a 25-8 victory over Florida. The Red Sox also tied an AL record with 14 runs in the first inning. Johnny Damon matched a major league mark with three hits in an inning. 2007 — Ryan Howard hits his 100th career home run in a 9 - 6 loss to the Reds. The shot against Aaron Harang makes him the fastest player in major league history to hit 100 homers, doing so in his 325th game. 2008 — Carlos Delgado of the New York Mets homered twice, including a grand slam, and set a franchise record with nine RBIs in a 15-6 rout of the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the opener of the teams' two-ballpark doubleheader. The Yankees beat the Mets 9-0 at Shea Stadium in the night game. 2009 — Tim Wakefield makes his 382nd start for the Boston Red Sox, tying Roger Clemens for most in franchise history. The 42-year-old knuckleballer earns his tenth win of the year with six scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves. Boston prevails, 1 - 0, with Mark Kotsay driving in the game's only run. 2010 — Jamie Moyer surrendered his record-breaking 506th home run but was sharp otherwise, and the Philadelphia Phillies took advantage of Toronto's troubles to beat the Blue Jays 11-2. Moyer only mistake was a two-run homer by Vernon Wells in the third inning. Moyer passed former Phillies Hall of Famer Robin Roberts for the most homers allowed in a career. 2016 — Kris Bryant became the first major leaguer to hit three homers and two doubles in a game, and Jake Arrieta added a solo shot, leading the Chicago Cubs to an 11-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. 2016 — The Texas Rangers wrapped up a weird win at 2:44 a.m., rallying after a rain delay of more than 3 1/2 hours in the ninth inning to beat the New York Yankees 9-6 with maybe 100 fans left in the stands. Umpire crew chief Paul Nauert signaled for the tarp at 10:40 p.m. The game resumed at 2:15 a.m. Texas trailed 6-5 when Kirby Yates replaced closer Aroldis Chapman after the delay with a runner on first and no outs. For the first time, this voting is two-tiered, with today's winners the victors of a second round of strictly on-line voting among the three top finishers at each position, after the more traditional ballots have been counted. The results are well-balanced, with only one team managing as many as three players elected - the Astros with 3B Alex Bregman and OFs George Springer and Michael Brantley - and are generally representative of who have been the best players so far this year. 2021 — A little over a week after MLB has begun to systematically examine pitchers for foreign substances to improve grip, a first victim is caught: Hector Santiago of the Mariners is ejected after umpires discover an unknown sticky substances on his glove. The glove is impounded and sent for further analysis, while Santiago protests his innocence, claiming that he was only using rosin to prevent perspiration from dripping unto his hands. He will be issued a ten-game suspension. _____

The Paige Bueckers vs. Caitlin Clark Effect: The two stars to face off when Dallas Wings host Indiana Fever at the AAC
Arguably one of the most anticipated WNBA matchups of the 2025 season is happening Friday when the Dallas Wings host the Indiana Fever at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. In short, everyone will be focused on the two No. 1 picks in the 2024 and 2025 drafts, Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers. Both are credited for helping to bring a new wave of WNBA fans to the league over the last couple of years – Clark's rookie year in 2024 and Bueckers' rookie year this season – helping boost ticket sales in both their respective cities as players. The excitement over the game prompted the Wings to move the game to the AAC, which holds more than triple the fans of the Wings' normal home court, College Park Center in Arlington. Tickets are still available, mostly on the secondary market, averaging about $130 to over $600 for seats closer to the court. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 CT. During the first five weeks of the WNBA season, the Wings are 12th in the league standings and the Fever are 7th. History between Bueckers and Clark This isn't the first time, of course, the two stars have gone head-to-head. In college, Clark, who played at Iowa, and Bueckers, a UConn star, faced off in the Women's' NCAA Tournament. In the 2021 Sweet Sixteen game between Iowa and UConn, Bueckers' near-triple-double helped lead the Huskies to a 92-72 victory over Iowa. Clark had 21 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds that game. UConn guard Paige Bueckers (5) and Iowa guard Caitlin Clark (22) walk off the court after their college basketball game in the Sweet Sixteen round of the women's NCAA tournament at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Saturday, March 27, 2021. Eric Gay / AP By the time the two teams met again, in the 2024 Final Four, a lot had changed for the college stars. Bueckers was sidelined with a torn ACL the previous year, and Clark had become a sports sensation known for her long 3s. In that matchup, Iowa was the favorite to win, being the No. 1 seed in the tournament, as UConn was ranked No. 3. In Bueckers' return to the tournament, the Hawkeyes prevailed with a close 71-69 win over UConn. Former teammates The two were also teammates for the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. Bueckers led Team USA with 19 points in the squad's win over Australia in the Final and was named MVP that year. Bueckers' current WNBA stats On Sunday, June 22, Bueckers passed Clark, becoming the fastest player to reach 200 points and 50 rebounds in WNBA history. She leads all rookies in scoring, and averages nearly 18 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. Bueckers hit double figures in her 12th game as the Wings defeated the fourth overall ranked team in the league, the Atlanta Dream, on Tuesday, June 24. Clark's current WNBA stats As of late, Clark has been cold from her signature long-distance 3s while on the road. But once she gets going, it could mean trouble for Dallas. She's averaging just over 18 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game. She's currently ranked second overall in assists per game. Clark is also leading the fan voting for next month's WNBA All-Star Game.
