‘Worked all day, studied till 3 am': Jharkhand mobile cover seller cracks NEET against all odds
A young man selling mobile phone covers on a cart in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur has set an example by scoring 549 marks in the NEET UG exam. Rohit Kumar, has secured 12,484th rank at the all India level and hope to secure admission in a government medical college in Jharkhand.
In a video shared by Physics Wallah, founder and CEO Alakh Pandey visited Kumar at his cart to congratulate him. Kumar revealed that he was part of Physics Wallah's Ummeed batch, which offers free coaching to all students aiming for NEET 2025
Kumar revealed that his father used to work at a vegetable market. After 12th, he dropped out of college to prepare for NEET. During COVID pandemic, he had worked at a medical store and was inspired to study medicine.
He told Pandey, that during his preparation for NEET, he used to work all day selling phone covers at his stall and then study till 3 am for the exam. The next day, he would wake up at 7am and return to work.
In another video, Alakh Pandey gifted a doctor's coat to the bright student and congratulated him on his success.

Mahesh Kumar from Rajasthan clinched the all-India topper position, with Utkarsh Awadhiya from Madhya Pradesh securing the second rank. Avika Aggarwal from Delhi was named the female topper, finishing fifth overall.
Krishang Joshi from Maharashtra and Mrinal Kishore Jha from Delhi secured the third and fourth ranks, respectively.
This year saw a drop in the number of qualifying candidates compared to last year's 13.15 lakh. A total of 22.09 lakh students appeared for the exam this year, slightly fewer than last year's 23.33 lakh.
Uttar Pradesh led the chart for qualifying candidates with over 1.70 lakh, followed by Maharashtra (over 1.25 lakh) and Rajasthan (over 1.19 lakh).

Karnataka government: Stop bike taxi operations or face action
Bengaluru: The govt has directed bike taxi operators and two-wheeler ride-hailing platforms to cease their services from Monday in compliance with the high court order. Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy told TOI companies failing to follow the directive will face strict action. "They must comply with the high court order and discontinue bike taxi services. If they don't, the transport department will take necessary enforcement steps," Reddy said. Apps including Rapido, Ola, and Uber offer bike taxi services across Karnataka, despite the govt's objections. The minister reiterated that the use of privately registered two-wheelers for commercial purposes is illegal and this has been the govt's consistent position before the high court. "A single-judge bench had given aggregators six weeks to end operations in early April. The deadline was extended to June 15. A few days ago, a division bench refused to stay the order. Complying with the court's order, they must stop now," he clarified. TOI reported on April 30 about the extended deadline. Bike taxis first emerged in Bengaluru around 2015-16 but faced regulatory pushback, including hefty fines and vehicle seizures. Although services were temporarily halted, they experienced a rise patronage after the Covid-19 pandemic as people were hesitant to use public transport. However, their growth sparked a backlash from autorickshaw drivers, who suffered from reduced ridership, pandemic-related losses, and the Shakti scheme — which allows women to travel for free in state-owned buses. Autorickshaw unions held multiple protests and demonstrations demanding a complete ban on what they considered illegal bike taxi operations. In 2024, the govt scrapped its own E-bike taxi scheme, citing safety concerns and misuse. Officials argue that aggregators continued to operate without valid permits, making their services unlawful. Amid the crackdown, there is mounting demand from users and industry groups for a structured policy to regulate bike taxis. Nasscom has urged the govt to extend the deadline and warned an abrupt shutdown would impact the livelihood of thousands of people. The industry body has also called on the govt to establish a clear regulatory framework to legalise and manage bike taxi operations.

GST revenue in Bengal jumps to 9.5% from 5% last fiscal
Kolkata: Revenue growth through GST in Bengal has jumped to 9.5% this year from about 5% last fiscal. Shravan Kumar, chief commissioner of central goods and services and central excise, Kolkata zone, said this while addressing a conference — '19th Residential Study Course' — organised by Indirect Tax Committee of Bombay Chartered Accountants' Society (BCAS) in the city. In Bengal, authorities have detected Rs 3,500 crores of fraudulent ITC, leaving 13-15 people behind bars. These exercises have improved the revenue of Bengal govt from 5% to 9.5% in the last one year," said Kumar. Members of traders' bodies highlighted the areas of GST that call for reforms. Akshay Binjrajka, president of Bharat Toy Association, said: "Currently, toy comes under two tax categories in GST — 12% for non-battery-operated and 18% for battery-operated toys. We urge that all toys should come under 5% GST so that customers can purchase more and manufacturing cost will decrease." CA Mandar Telang, treasurer of BCAS, emphasised the necessity of re-examining the provisions and timelines fixed for correcting bona fide errors. Around 300 delegates from across the country participated in the conference.

Flats cancelled, Amrapali buyers protest at court receiver's office in Noida
Noida: Fed up with National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the homebuyers of Amrapali projects staged a protest outside the court receiver's office in Sector 62 on Friday. The buyers, who have moved Supreme Court, are demanding "a fair probe into the matter" during the next hearing. The protesters alleged their flats were cancelled and later awarded to other players at a very low cost to make money. "The buyers were not given a chance to submit their representation," they alleged. Attempts to contact Gaur builder and NBCC for their comments failed. Facing protests from Amrapali homebuyers, NBCC has defended its decision to sell new flats in bulk to private developers, saying it was a "last resort" to raise funds for completing stalled housing projects. The state-run construction company's move has sparked outrage among homebuyers, who alleged while their long-awaited flats were being cancelled in the name of delayed payments, new flats with additional FAR were being handed over to private developers at "discounted" rates.
