Five tribes rally against job quota policy in Nagaland

Defying the inclement weather, protesters gathered in Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Tseminyu and Wokha, demanding either a complete scrapping of the 48-year-old indefinite job quota for seven backward tribes, introduced in 1977 for an initial period of 10 years, or the exclusive reservation of the remaining unreserved quota for their five tribes.
In Dimapur, a large number of protesters, both young and old, convened at the DC court junction, before marching to the deputy commissioner's office to submit a memorandum.
Leaders of the three tribe organizations, who were present, affirmed their unwavering commitment to continue the agitation until their demands were met.
They announced their plan for the second phase of the stir, which will be a peaceful sit-in (dharna) outside the Nagaland Civil Secretariat starting June 2nd. This will be followed by a total shutdown in all districts inhabited by the five tribes, commencing on June 9th.The protesters then proceeded to the DC office to submit an "ultimatum reminder" to the state government.
The memorandum, addressed to the chief secretary, reiterated that the 5 CoRRP, representing the apex bodies of the five tribes – Angami Public Organisation, Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho, Rengma Hoho, and Sumi Hoho – had previously submitted a memorandum to CM Neiphiu Rio on September 20, 2024, followed by a 30-day ultimatum on April 26, 2025, to address their demands.
The memo expressed disappointment that the state govt's response, conveyed through a letter from the home commissioner dated May 25, 2025, had failed to address the core concerns and issues raised in their initial memorandum.

The 5 CoRRP stated that they were resorting to democratic agitation through public protest rallies in all districts inhabited by the five tribes and submitting an ultimatum reminder regarding their "legitimate demands." The committee further declared their intention to intensify the agitation in various forms until their grievances are adequately addressed.

Stop intimidation or face retaliation: FNCC to Kuki militants
Imphal: The Foothills Naga Co-ordination Committee (FNCC) has condemned what it described as 'escalating acts of intimidation and violence' by Kuki militants against Naga civilians in Manipur 's Ireng and nearby areas. FNCC said Kuki National Front (KNF-P) cadres entered Naga-inhabited areas twice with the second instance on Aug 15 and assaulted farmers who were working in their own fields and termed the incidents as "deliberate acts meant to spread fear and provoke unrest". FNCC alleged that the militants are moving freely with sophisticated weapons in broad daylight, with complete impunity and described the act as "an open display of terror" which not only endangered lives of civilians but also posed "a direct challenge" to the very existence of the Naga people. In a statement, FNCC claimed that Naga people in the area have consistently upheld peace and shown restraint. However, it warned that it would not remain passive if authorities failed to act. "We will enforce a total bandh, or shutdown, on the movement of Kukis in Naga-inhabited areas if govt forces did not intervene decisively," it warned. While stating that Naga people should live in fear in their own land, it has also cautioned that if the Kuki militants refused to respect the peaceful intent of the Nagas, they are "fully prepared to respond in a language they understand". Play ‘depicting burqa-clad women as terrorists' at I-Day event in Gujarat school kicks up a row
A play staged during the Independence Day programme at a municipal corporation school in Bhavnagar city, Gujarat, on August 15 has triggered a controversy over the alleged depiction of burqa-clad women as 'terrorists'. Bhavnagar District Education Officer (DEO) Hitendrasinh D Padheriya on Tuesday sent a notice to Bhavnagar Municipal School Board Administrative Officer (AO) Munjal Badmaliya seeking a factual report within seven days on the programme held at the school, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Pratmik Shala Number 51 in Kumbharwada area of Bhavnagar city. The notice was issued based on the representation made by a social organisation, Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar, which alleged that the play 'depicted the Muslim community as terrorists' and demanded stern action against the 'teachers behind the play'. In the notice sent to Bhavnagar Municipal School Board Administrative Officer (AO) Munjal Badmaliya, the DEO sought details of the cultural programme at the school and asked whether the depiction as stated in the representation was intentional or unintentional, along with details of the function held on the school campus. Confirming the development, Padheriya told The Indian Express, 'The representation, marked to the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner and DEO on Monday, stated that there was a deliberate depiction of muslims as terrorists during the cultural programme held at the school on August 15. To find out facts and details, I have sought an explanation from the Administrative Officer within seven days.' The all-girls school in Bhavnagar with an enrollment of more than 600 students has come under spotlight after videos of the cultural programme appeared on social media. In its representation, Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar alleged 'an attempt by the school staff to hurt religious sentiments and spread unrest in the public'. 'At Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Prathmik Shala Number 50-51 in Bhavnagar's Kumbharwada area, a play was presented by the children….. In this play, Kashmiri pilgrims as well as the Army and terrorists were depicted. In the play, girls dressed in Muslim attire (burqa) were shown as terrorists, clearly depicting the Muslim community as terrorists,' Bandharan Bachav Samiti said in the representation. The Samiti added that there is a lot of anger and protest in the Muslim community against the teachers, who, it said, showed their criminal mentality by staging such a play in the school. Speaking to The Indian Express, Jehurbhai Hussainbhai Jeja, the president of Bandharan Bachav Samiti, said, 'The Muslim community demands that all those school staff behind this act should be suspended and strict legal action should be taken so that no such unconstitutional act is committed in the future.' When contacted, the Administrative Officer, Munjal Badmaliya, said, 'The cultural programmes are held every year on January 26 and August 15. This year it was themed on Operation Sindoor and the bravery of our defence forces, and programmes were held in every school. Nothing was intentional or deliberate. We will submit our response to the notice.' There are over 30,000 students enrolled in 68 municipal schools in Bhavnagar city. This year as a part of Operation Sindoor celebration, school students sent Rakhis and letters to the soldiers from Gujarat. From Bhavnagar district alone, over 2 lakh school students have written to the soldiers from Gujarat.
