Five tribes rally against job quota policy in Nagaland
Dimapur: Hundreds of people from five Naga tribes – Sumi, Ao, Lotha, Angami, and Rengma – under the banner of the 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP), took out rallies in five district headquarters of Nagaland on Thursday against the state govt's alleged inaction on their demands to review the Nagaland job reservation policy.

Defying the inclement weather, protesters gathered in Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Tseminyu and Wokha, demanding either a complete scrapping of the 48-year-old indefinite job quota for seven backward tribes, introduced in 1977 for an initial period of 10 years, or the exclusive reservation of the remaining unreserved quota for their five tribes.
In Dimapur, a large number of protesters, both young and old, convened at the DC court junction, before marching to the deputy commissioner's office to submit a memorandum.
Leaders of the three tribe organizations, who were present, affirmed their unwavering commitment to continue the agitation until their demands were met.
They announced their plan for the second phase of the stir, which will be a peaceful sit-in (dharna) outside the Nagaland Civil Secretariat starting June 2nd. This will be followed by a total shutdown in all districts inhabited by the five tribes, commencing on June 9th.The protesters then proceeded to the DC office to submit an "ultimatum reminder" to the state government.
The memorandum, addressed to the chief secretary, reiterated that the 5 CoRRP, representing the apex bodies of the five tribes – Angami Public Organisation, Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho, Rengma Hoho, and Sumi Hoho – had previously submitted a memorandum to CM Neiphiu Rio on September 20, 2024, followed by a 30-day ultimatum on April 26, 2025, to address their demands.
The memo expressed disappointment that the state govt's response, conveyed through a letter from the home commissioner dated May 25, 2025, had failed to address the core concerns and issues raised in their initial memorandum.

The 5 CoRRP stated that they were resorting to democratic agitation through public protest rallies in all districts inhabited by the five tribes and submitting an ultimatum reminder regarding their "legitimate demands." The committee further declared their intention to intensify the agitation in various forms until their grievances are adequately addressed.

Kohima: All seven NCP MLAs in Nagaland joined the ruling NDPP on Saturday, giving the CM Neiphiu Rio-led party an absolute majority in the 60-member assembly. With this merger, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's (NDPP) tally increased from 25 to 32. The NCP's Nagaland unit had sided with the Ajit Pawar-led faction after the party split. NCP emerged as the third-largest party in the state in the 2023 assembly elections, after the NDPP and its ally BJP, which won 12 seats. According to an order issued by Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, the seven MLAs presented themselves and submitted formal letters, stating their decision to merge with the NDPP. These MLAs are Namri Nchang of Tening, Picto Shohe of Atoizu, Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe of Wokha Town, Y Mankhao Konyak of Mon Town, A Pongshi Phom of Longleng, P Longon of Noklak, and S Toiho Yeptho of Suruhoto. The speaker noted that the merger met the constitutional requirement under the Tenth Schedule. In line with the Members of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 2019, the speaker approved the merger and directed the assembly secretariat to update party affiliation records accordingly, the order said. The NCP MLAs were supporting the NDPP-BJP government just like the other smaller parties, as there is no opposition in the state assembly. Addressing a press conference, state minister KG Kenye said, "This evening, the seven NCP MLAs submitted their merger application to the speaker, who has graciously accepted it. With this, the NDPP's strength in the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly rises from 25 to 32 members." He emphasised that the NDPP's increased strength will further reinforce the leadership of Chief Minister Rio and help the government serve the people more effectively. "This development strengthens the hands of our CM and the functioning of the government," said Kenye, who is also the government spokesperson. Asked how this merger could impact seat-sharing arrangements within the ruling alliance, he stressed that "no permanent formula exists". "Every election brings its own dynamics, and accordingly, arrangements, including seat-sharing, may need to be re-evaluated," he said. On the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle, the minister said, "That prerogative lies solely with the CM. We hope to meet him soon, and such questions are best posed to him directly." Kenye said that while the NCP is a national party, its broad-based agenda may not fully align with the state-centric needs of Nagaland. "Being part of a national party, they are often bound by nationwide priorities, limiting their ability to focus on local issues. In contrast, the NDPP, though national in outlook, remains deeply rooted as a regional party with a strong commitment to local interests," he said. The leadership of CM Rio and the overall direction of the present government played a significant role in attracting the MLAs, he added. NCP leaders in the state and the MLAs who switched sides could not be reached for a comment. Apart from 32 NDPP and 12 BJP MLAs, the state assembly has five NPP legislators, two members each of the LJP (Ram Vilas), Naga People's Front and RPI (Athawale), a JD(U) MLA and four Independents.

Manipur BJP legislators push for government formation
The Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs in Manipur have renewed their push to end President's Rule in the State and form a popular government that can focus on peace and development. Fifteen MLAs held a meeting with State BJP president, Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, and other party leaders on Saturday (May 31, 2025) to discuss the possibility of 'meeting the expectations of the people to have a democratically elected popular government' in Manipur soon. The meeting at the State party headquarters came less than 24 hours after 28 BJP legislators converged at the official residence of former Minister Thongam Biswajit in Imphal on Friday evening. The BJP has 37 MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, seven of whom belong to the Kuki-Zo community. Those seven MLAs have not set foot in Imphal since May 2023, when an ethnic conflict broke out between the Meiteis, who dominate the State capital and the valley beyond, and the Kuki-Zo tribes, claiming more than 250 lives and displacing about 60,000 people. Appeal to BJP Central leadership One of the BJP MLAs said the discussion revolved around meeting the party's Central leadership and proceeding to form the government according to the Constitution of India and the constitution of the BJP. 'We desire a government that can focus on development and sustainable peace. Everything depends on our Central leadership,' Ms. Devi told journalists after the meeting. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13, days after Nongthombam Biren Singh resigned as the Chief Minister and the BJP failed to reach a consensus on his successor. 'Undermining Manipur's identity' The bid to form the government gained momentum after the May 20 bus incident plunged the Imphal Valley back into chaos. Protestors demanded an apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the resignation of the State's top three officials – the Chief Secretary, the Security Advisor, and the Director General of Police – for 'undermining the identity of Manipur, its name, pride, and respect'. Their anger was against security forces personnel for making a team of journalists travelling to the Shirui Lily Festival in the Naga-dominated Ukhrul district cover the words 'Manipur State Transport' on the windscreen of the bus they were in. A team of 10 NDA legislators — including two from the National People's Party led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K.
