PewDiePie aka Felix Kjellberg, reigned YouTube for more than half a decade. In 2025, the Swedish gamer and vlogger is no longer in the top 10 most-subscribed YouTube channels.
Barrels!
Felix Kjellberg, popularly known as PewDiePie, is no longer in the top 10 most-subscribed YouTube channels in the world. The 35-year-old content creator, who started his YouTube journey on April 29, 2010, quickly rose to fame thanks to his videos of him playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Happy Wheels, Flappy Bird, and Pokémon GO. His exaggerated reactions, over-the-top screams, and unscripted commentary made him stand out from the rest. His Swedish accent, charming on-screen presence, and consistent uploads quickly saw his channel rise to the most subscribed channel in the world. His vlogs and Q&A videos helped me build a Bro Army and loyal community.
He stayed on top for over five and a half years across four separate runs in the past 15 years or so. However, his 'beef" with the music label, T-Series, based in India, was what put him in unprecedented global limelight.
PewDiePie Vs T-Series
The one-sided YouTube beef started back in September 2018 when, out of nowhere, the Noida-based music label T-Series claimed the #2 subscriber spot, sending the YouTube community including Pewds in a tizzy.
While it was only fun and games for the Swedish gamer, who even released a diss track on T-Series, his fans and friends took the YouTube war way too seriously.
MrBeast, known for his extravagant challenges and philanthropy, and who is currently the most subscribed YouTube channel on the platform with 403 million subs, was a fairly 'small" channel back in the day yet he spearheaded the 'Subscribe To PewDiePie" meme and took the Internet euphoria to the next level. Saiman Says, an Indian YouTuber, also gained popularity (and subscribers) when he joined thousands of YouTube creators including Davie504, and Markiplier who backed the Swedish content creator in this subscriber race against T-Series.
Saiman travelled to the UK and even made a collab video with PewDiePie where the latter tried Indian snacks.
Pandemic, Marriage, Japan
Fascinated by Japanese culture and his love for anime, PewDiePie expressed moving to Japan and decided to relocate to the country from the UK along with his wife Marzia and pugs, Edgar and Maya. In a video, he emphasised the struggles of obtaining a stringent visa and the difficulty of moving the pugs to a different country.
The transition aligned with the lifestyles of the YouTubers-turned-partners who aimed for a quieter and quaint life away from the spotlight. Privacy was hard to come by in the UK and Sweden.
PewDiePie's years of YouTube grind reached its tail end. The young boy who screamed, shouted, and was untamed which often landed him into the biggest of YouTube controversies, transitioned into a laidback creator and vlogger with a slow, quiet lifestyle in Japan. In 2023, the couple welcomed their son Bjorn.
His balanced and quieter YouTube content was welcomed by his loyal Bro Army.
Who Are The Top 10?
The current YouTubers reigning the video-sharing platform include the likes of MrBeast, Cocomelon, Like Nastya. Notably, three out of 10 YouTube channels are India-based channels featuring music and entertainment content.
MrBeast: 408 million subscribers
T-Series: 300 million subscribers
Cocomelon- Nursery Rhymes: 195 million subscribers
YouTube Movies: 186 million subscribers
Vlad and Niki: 133 million subscribers
Kids Diana Show: 130 million subscribers
Like Nastya: 125 million subscribers

Salaam New York: Zohran Mamdani & a fusion of 3 cross-continental cultures

There has been a development in New York that challenges Donald Trump's America, where certain subjects – such as diversity, inclusion, immigrants, and Palestine – have become difficult to venture into. It is the primary victory of Zohran Kwame Mamdani in the mayoral election, one that makes him likely to become New York City's first Indian-American and first Muslim mayor if he wins against the Republican candidate in November. The 33-year-old Democratic candidate, who is a former Republican, was born to immigrant parents, supports Palestine, has a socialist agenda for New York, including free childcare and rent cap, feels strongly about climate change, wants to tax wealthy Big Apple residents, and increase corporate tax. His pro-Palestine slogan, 'Globalise the intifada (rebellion or uprising)', has his opponents gunning for him and the American media dissecting his politics, but he has stood his ground. In many ways, Mamdani symbolises multiculturalism, which stems from the family he comes from, the relationships he has forged, and the arts he has embraced. His mother, Mira Nair, is a well-recognised Indian-American filmmaker, many of whose movies have been critically acclaimed globally. Among them are Salaam Bombay!, Mississippi Masala, The Namesake, Queen of Katwe, Monsoon Wedding, in each of which she pushes boundaries, often turning the spotlight on the underdog, bringing the missable into focus: Whether it is about the struggles of first-generation immigrants (The Namesake), who are caught between two cultures, and their children, who believe they belong to their parents' adopted country but don't quite; or, about the precarious lives of children in the slums of the financial powerhouse now called Mumbai (Salaam Bombay!), where the actors are the street children themselves; or about the travails of a 10-year-old chess prodigy born in a disadvantaged part of Uganda (Queen of Katwe). There is a story behind the name 'Nair', which appears to indicate that Mamdani's mother has roots in Kerala. She is, however, a Punjabi, and her father was in the Indian Administrative Service and mother a social worker. The family name, Nayyar, was changed to 'Nair' by her grandfather for reasons unclear. There is also a story behind Mamdani's middle name, 'Kwame'. It was given to him by his Indian-Ugandan father, Mahmood Mamdani, in honour of the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, whom the BBC described as a 'Hero of Independence' and an 'international symbol of freedom as the leader of the first black African country to shake off the chains of colonial rule'. An academic, Mamdani Senior, whose specialisation includes colonialism and post-colonialism, was born in pre-Independence Bombay to Gujarati Shia Muslim parents, who later migrated to Kampala, Uganda. He would, after coming to study in the United States in the '60s, participate in the civil rights movement, and would also be jailed. It wouldn't be amiss to say that a lot of Zohran Mamdani's politics has been shaped by his parents'. In 2013, for instance, Mira Nair had turned down an invitation to the Haifa International Film Festival in Israel as a guest of honour. On what was then called Twitter, and is now X, she posted: 'I will go to Israel when the walls come down. I will go to Israel when occupation is gone... I stand w/ Palestine for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel…' The mayor probable's parents, incidentally, met in Uganda while Nair was researching for Mississippi Masala, and that's where he was born in 1991 – coincidentally, the year the film was released. The couple immigrated to the US when he was seven. Earlier this year, Zohran Mamdani married Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, whose work, besides exploring migration, heritage, community and identity, also draws to pro-Palestinian themes. The arts have been Mamdani's constant companion – not just because of his filmmaker mother and artist wife. He is a former rapper. Nine years ago, he released an EP, titled 'Sidda Mukyaalo' (Luganda for 'No going back to the village'), along with Ugandan rapper HAB. And in 2019 came a single, titled 'Nani' – a tribute to his maternal grandmother, Praveen Nair, rich with cultural references to India. It featured the multifaceted actor and cookbook author Madhur Jaffrey as a revolutionary 'nani'. This video can be found on the YouTube channel called 'Mr Cardamom', a moniker Mamdani gave himself. It's a clever sobriquet, given that he is a lawmaker from Queens, and cardamom is recognised as the 'queen of spices'. It is a versatile spice, one that works both in sweet and savoury preparations, and while it is never the core ingredient, it always makes its presence known. Mamdani has also made the world sit up and take note. In 2019, when he first ran for office (New York State Assembly), he redirected his followers from 'Mr Cardamom' to his official handle on X with this message: 'You know I'll be forever spicy but I'm taking a break from being a spice to answer the question of what happens when a B-list rapper runs for office….'. His official handle now has something like 376,000 followers, whereas Mr Cardamom is at 380. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has gone after Mamdani through his social media platform, Truth Social, branding him a '100 per cent communist lunatic' and saying that 'the Democrats have crossed the line'. The rapper-turned-politician, however, is staying the course. In November, if he is elected New York City's mayor, one of the things he'll be doing is to oversee the largest municipal Budget in the US.

'As bad as Logan Paul's forest suicide video': MrBeast faces backlash for airing video after Tyler Wall's death

MrBeast is making headlines for all the wrong reasons after uploading a controversial YouTube video. Titled "Lose 100 LBs, Win $250,000!" , the June 21, 2025 upload was meant to be inspirational, but quickly spiraled into controversy when fans claimed it was 'emotionally exploitative.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Why? Because it included the raw, emotional reaction of Majd, the video's star, after learning that his trainer, Coach Tyler Wall, had passed away mid-challenge. The Video That Sparked the Outrage On June 21, 2025, MrBeast uploaded Lose 100 LBs, Win $250,000!, documenting Majd's weight-loss journey. The stakes were high, and so was the motivation—Majd's trainer, Coach Tyler Wall, was his guiding force. But by Day 85, tragedy struck: Coach Wall was found dead. The moment Majd learns this on camera? It's raw, emotional... and now, extremely controversial. And yes, that exact moment made it into the final edit, complete with emotional piano music. That didn't sit well with a chunk of the internet. Fans Draw Logan Paul Comparisons Not everyone saw the video as inspiring. In fact, many found it exploitative. X user @DewEnjoyer didn't hold back: 'MrBeast adding sad piano music to the guy's reaction... is f**king disgusting. Recording it AT ALL is insane... POSTING it is inhumane.' The comparison to Logan Paul's 2017 'Suicide Forest' video, where he filmed a body in Japan's Aokigahara forest, was immediate and sharp. Another user, @drjellyfanguzzz said: 'I don't think recording somebody in their most vulnerable moments like that is healthy to show…' 'Fu*k You MrBeast' Other users felt MrBeast should've pulled the plug on the entire project after Tyler's passing. One X user wrote: 'Fuck you MrBeast. The solution was stopping the video and just giving him the money.' Another added that filming someone's grief in real time felt... wrong: 'I don't think recording somebody in their most vulnerable moments like that is healthy to show.' Many said it felt more like trauma than a tribute. But Not Everyone's Mad To be fair, not all fans are dragging MrBeast through the mud. Some are defending the video, urging others to watch it in full before jumping to conclusions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now One viewer noted the video came with a viewer discretion warning, was dedicated to Coach Wall, and even claimed the family gave their blessing to share the footage: 'The family wanted MrBeast to post the footage… People are overreacting to farm clout.' In the description, the team wrote a heartfelt note calling Tyler 'a kind and genuine spirit' and said his family wanted his legacy to be one of hope and positivity . So… Was It Too Much? MrBeast has always blurred the line between inspiration and entertainment . But when real-life grief is involved, it gets complicated. Whether it was honoring a legacy or exploiting a tragedy... well, the internet's still arguing. One thing's for sure: in an age where everything is content, the line between 'sharing a story' and 'oversharing someone else's pain' has never been thinner.
