has announced Rs 1 crore for the upgradation of all drug rehab centres in Punjab. The Punjab govt has partnered with the
Sun Foundation
to introduce skill development programmes at the 19 govt-run drug rehabilitation centres across the state. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at Punjab Bhawan in the presence of health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh and Vikramjit Singh Sahney, chairman of the Sun Foundation.
Additionally, the foundation will provide manpower and cover the maintenance costs of the skill development facilities. Health minister Dr Balbir Singh hailed the initiative as a vital component of the state's ongoing "
Yudh Nasheyan Virudh
" (War Against Drugs) campaign and expressed his gratitude to MP Sahney for his commitment to a
drug-free Punjab
.
Dr Singh stressed the need to address the concerning relapse rate of 80–90% by integrating skill development and recreational activities into the rehabilitation process. He commended the govt's progressive approach of decriminalising drug users and recognising them as patients in need of care and support.
Outlining the state's strategy, Dr Singh said efforts were underway to shift intravenous drug users to safer alternatives such as tablets and liquid methadone in order to curb the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C. "My vision is to transform drug addicts into entrepreneurs through targeted skill development," he said, expressing hope for a "positive domino effect" where rehabilitated individuals become productive members of society.

MP Sahney addressed the mischaracterisation of Punjab as uniquely drug-afflicted, pointing out that the crisis extends to several Indian states, including Maharashtra and Gujarat. Reaffirming his "heartfelt desire" to help Punjab overcome this challenge, he announced the Sun Foundation's commitment to operating all 19 rehabilitation centres. The foundation already manages successful centres in Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Mohali.
Sahney shared that the foundation would introduce a range of recreational, motivational, and spiritual activities — including games, yoga, music, Gurbani, counselling, and television-equipped recreational rooms. Emphasis will also be placed on skilling individuals in organic farming, plumbing, electrical work, mobile repair, and cookery — equipping them to earn livelihoods post-recovery and reducing the chances of relapse.

An 18-year-old girl from Vinzol area, who was admitted to LG Hospital with complaints of respiratory illness, succumbed to the viral infection Sunday night. The youngest patient was two days old, whereas another patient at Civil Hospital was eight months old, according to hospital data. It is notable that Gujarat ranks fourth in the country in terms of active cases at 338. Kerala leads the tally with 1,435 active cases as at 8 am on Monday, followed by 506 in Maharashtra, and 483 in Delhi. Some other states with high cases include West Bengal at 331 and Karnataka at 253. "The double season this month has caused a rise in flu-like symptoms among patients. The symptoms of Covid are no different. Covid is endemic now, and there is no need to be alarmed with rise or fall in the number of cases reported. Majority of the patients do not show any major effect due to acquired immunity," said a city-based physician.

IIT-BHU scientists' technology to check drug resistance of viruses
Varanasi: Scientists at Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) have developed new framework to help understand how virus evolves to evade drugs and treatments. While the technology focuses primarily on Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), it can also be applied to other pathogens and infectious diseases. The study, led by assistant professor at the School of Biochemical Engineering, Aditya Kumar Padhi, was published in the Biophysical Journal. The 'integrated multi-scale computational framework' combines several advanced computer-based methods including protein design, machine learning, hybrid QM/MM, and multi-scale simulations. It helps identify mutations or changes in viral proteins leading to drug resistance. The discovery comes at a time when Covid-19 cases are being reported. As the virus continues to mutate rapidly, the framework can help anticipate how it might resist treatment in future. While the current study focuses on resistance to sotrovimab, a monoclonal antibody used against SARS-CoV-2, the framework is applicable to other diseases too, including cancer and urinary tract infections. "We developed this framework to address complex healthcare problems like antimicrobial resistance using integrated computational methods. Its modular design makes it suitable for a wide range of biomedical and healthcare challenges," said Padhi. 15-year-old boy critical with Covid & typhoid gets well, goes home
Kolkata: Amidst reports of a few Covid-19 related deaths across the country, no such deaths were reported from Bengal during this current spike. In fact, a 15-year-old boy who had a double infection of Covid-19 and typhoid was discharged from hospital. The teenager was admitted to Peerless Hospital on May 24 with a high-grade fever and other gastrointestinal problems. Test reports confirmed Covid-19. On Monday, four Covid-19 related deaths were reported – one each from Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Two of the deaths were patients in their early 20s, with other existing health conditions. While the boy from Rishra had no existing health conditions, he was rushed to the Kolkata hospital with complaints of severe dehydration, loose stool, vomiting, throat pain, and a history of high-grade fever which refused to subside despite medication by local doctors. Due to the viral infection symptoms, a viral panel test was conducted. While the result was negative for all other respiratory viruses, doctors found the boy's swab samples positive for SARS-CoV-2. "We kept him in isolation and treated him for all symptoms, including severe dehydration. "Since the fever was persisting and a few other symptoms were not matching with Covid-19 alone, we had to look for the presence of other infections. The blood culture confirmed typhoid. This was a clear case of dual infection of Covid-19 and typhoid, and we had to take all precautions so that we continued the treatment for both infections," added Dasgupta. Experts said that even during the two waves of the Covid pandemic, many children were found infected. But unlike in adults, the infection was generally mild in children. However, dual infection could be risky for both children and adults. There have been several cases of Covid-19 with dual infections, including those of dengue, malaria, and scrub typhus, where doctors have to be extra careful in treating those patients. The 15-year-old recovered during the treatment and was discharged from hospital after seven days with the advice to stay in isolation for at least seven more days. Sources said that the father, who brought the boy to the hospital, also tested positive for Covid-19, but he is in home isolation and has only mild symptoms.
