Italy and Spain bake in heatwave as cities issue red alerts and regions mull work bans

Yahoo29-06-2025
Several Italian regions are considering banning some work activities during the hottest hours of the day as a severe heatwave sweeps across the country, prompting red alerts in 21 cities by Sunday morning.
Lazio, Tuscany, Calabria, Puglia and Umbria are among the regions planning to introduce the measure in response to soaring temperatures. The Italian Health Ministry placed 17 out of 27 monitored cities under its highest heat alert, including Rome, Milan and Naples.
In Rome, tourists sought shade near the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, some using umbrellas and drinking from public fountains to stay cool.
Similar scenes were reported in Milan and Naples, where street vendors sold lemonade to help residents and visitors cope with the heat.
Elsewhere in Europe, Spain's national meteorological agency AEMET warned that June is on track to become the hottest on record, with temperatures in Seville and other southern cities climbing to 42°C.
Health authorities advised the public to avoid strenuous activity during peak heat and to stay hydrated, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.
Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves in southern Europe to climate change.
High temperatures were also reported across Greece and Portugal, with both locals and tourists seeking relief from the extreme weather.

Prince William and Princess Kate urged to be 'prepared' as beloved home hit by amber warning

Prince William and Princess Kate are likely to be enjoying the blissful summer sunshine just like the rest of us, but the UK's latest heatwave comes with a major warning, particularly for the Wales family. There has been an Amber Alert issued across many parts of the UK by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) due to the extreme temperatures. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) have stressed that homeowners near green spaces are particularly at risk and as the Prince and Princess of Wales live at Adelaide Cottage on the Great Windsor estate, they could be in more danger. There are multiple reasons that open expanses of grass are hotspots for incidents. The area can draw tourists and cigarette butts and barbecues are major culprits that can spark devastating fires. Recently, there have been incidents in Dorset and at Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. Steve Cole, Director of Policy at RoSPA said: "These fires are a stark reminder that the UK is not immune to the dangers of extreme heat. With temperatures soaring and vegetation drying out, the risk of wildfires increases dramatically, even in urban and coastal areas. "The fact is that many wildfires are preventable. Simple actions—like properly disposing of cigarettes, and avoiding open flames can make a huge difference. The recent fires underscore the need for greater public awareness and preparedness." It's unknown if the family are currently spending time at home or if they are away for summer holidays. Historically, the royals spend time in Scotland each summer for a break away from the limelight. King Charles is already in Scotland for summer, however, he has still been working and last week he attended a special Stand-Up Parade for Number 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron at R.A.F. Lossiemouth. As well as giving a speech, the monarch stopped to chat to friends and family – but one little soul wasn't best pleased. As he passed along the line of people, a very young baby was seen sobbing. The tot's mother was seen exercising some vigorous bouncing to try and soothe her as she spoke to His Majesty. See the video. Harry's home at risk Across the pond, William's brother Harry was subject to weather warnings recently too. Los Angeles residents were alerted about the possibility of rough seas and even tsunamis after a Russian earthquake. Luckily the area was unaffected in the end. Their property has also been under warnings about fires and mudslides in the past as the location is prone to extreme weather. Harry and Meghan's former neighbour and TV chat show host, Ellen DeGeneres, was once forced to evacuate her own property due to the flooding and landslides in the area.

Drivers told don't leave common item in car before Wednesday

Motorists have been warned to avoid leaving one dangerous item in their car this week. Another heatwave is set to roast the UK this week with temperatures reaching 34C, reports The Met Office predicted that parts of England are "likely to reach heatwave criteria by midweek", and weather maps predict that much of the UK will enjoy temperatures above 25C. READ MORE: 18 counties in England set to escape 32C heatwave this week Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp, click the link to join According to weather maps by WXCharts, the hottest temperatures will be experienced at the border of Norfolk, Lincolnshire, and Cambridgeshire one day this week. On Wednesday, August 13, Norfolk could peak at 33C, Birmingham will reach 31C, Bath could hit 30C, and London and Surrey will sizzle in 30C. And in searing, 30C-plus temperatures, a retailer has warned about keeping certain products inside a hot car. WickdUp, the rechargeable vape retailer, cautions that lithium-ion batteries inside everyday electronics become dangerously unstable as in-car temperatures climb past 30C. Forgotten devices left on dashboards, seats, or in gloveboxes can quickly transform from harmless gadgets into serious fire hazards. Vapes, power banks, and other gadgets can swell, leak, or even burst into flames when exposed to the sun. Mike Byers, Rechargeable Device Expert at WickdUp, said: 'We've all left a phone or vape in the car at some point. "But in this heat? "That simple habit could spark a disaster. "Take your devices with you — it's a tiny step that could save you thousands.' WickdUp created a summer parking safety checklist that includes always taking rechargeable devices with you - even if you're stepping away for just a few minutes and never leaving electronics in direct sunlight on dashboards or seats. It also urged drivers to avoid storing gadgets in glove compartments, where heat builds rapidly and to check devices regularly for signs of swelling, cracks, or heat damage. Cheap or counterfeit devices are especially risky, and some car insurance policies may not cover fire damage caused by improperly stored electronics. Mike Byers adds: 'Imagine stepping out for five minutes — and coming back to smoke, damage, or worse. "With travel season in full swing, don't let one small mistake ruin your holiday, leave you stranded or write off your car.'
