No. 3 overall seed Arkansas beats Creighton 8-3 to capture Fayetteville Regional
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Logan Maxwell drove in three with a pair of home runs and Justin Thomas Jr. delivered a three-run shot to back a 13-strikeout performance from starter Gage Wood as No. 3 overall seed Arkansas beat Creighton 8-3 on Sunday to win the Fayetteville Regional and earn a berth in the super regionals.
Wood (3-1) allowed three hits in six innings and two of them came in the fourth inning after he struck out the first two batters. Teddy Deters singled before Wood hit Will MacLean with a pitch. Ben North homered on the next pitch to get Creighton within 6-3.
Maxwell homered to left field off starter Garrett Langrell (7-2) for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Thomas homered to center in the second for a 5-0 lead and Ryder Helfrick added a solo shot in the third.
Maxwell homered leading off the fifth and Charles Davalan added an RBI triple in the sixth to cap the scoring. Gabe Gaeckle allowed two hits in three shutout innings for his first save.
The Razorbacks (46-13) — making their 36th appearance in the NCAA Tournament — have advanced to the College World Series 11 times but never won it. They were runners-up in 1979 and 2018.
Creighton (43-16) eliminated North Dakota State 11-10 earlier Sunday. The Bluejays have played in 12 tournaments and made their only CWS appearance in 1991.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as their head coach, opting for a young, emerging leader to rebuild a franchise that has regressed over the past few seasons, a person familiar with the search told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the hire hasn't officially been announced. Ott will be the team's fourth head coach in four seasons and replaces Mike Budenholzer, who was fired following a miserable 36-46 season that ended without a trip to the playoffs despite the high-priced trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. The 40-year-old Ott has worked for the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and the Cavaliers. It remains to be seen if Durant or Beal will be on next season's roster — both could be moved in trades. Booker seems like the only player on the roster who is truly untouchable after 10 seasons in the desert, including four All-Star appearances. Ott and fellow Cavs assistant Johnnie Bryant were the two finalists for the job. Ishbia and general manager Brian Gregory led a lengthy, deliberate search that lasted 1 1/2 months and included more than a dozen candidates. ESPN first reported the hiring. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dan Muse is the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins hired the former New York Rangers assistant on Wednesday, tasking him with helping the franchise navigate a rebuild during the twilight of longtime captain Sidney Crosby's career. Muse replaces Mike Sullivan. Sullivan and the Penguins split in April after a nearly decade-long tenure that included a pair of Stanley Cup titles. The Rangers quickly scooped up Sullivan, naming him their coach in early May. French Open: Coco Gauff will face a Frenchwoman ranked 361st in the semifinals. No. 1 Sinner wins
PARIS (AP) — That No. 2 seed Coco Gauff reached Thursday's French Open semifinals should surprise no one. Her 361st-ranked opponent for a berth in the title match? That's a whole other story. Gauff made it to the final four at Roland-Garros for the third time, getting past No. 7 Madison Keys 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday in a quarterfinal between two Americans who both have won a major title. Next up for 2023 U.S. Open champion Gauff? A matchup against French wild-card entry Loïs Boisson, who extended one of the most stunning runs in tennis history by beating No. 6 Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (6), 6-3. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW 'Unbelievable,' Boisson said. 'Incredible.' Those are a couple of good words for what's been happening. A year ago, Boisson was supposed to make her Grand Slam debut in Paris, but she tore a knee ligament and couldn't compete. Now 22, Boisson is the first woman to get to the semifinals of her first major tournament since Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati did it at the 1989 French Open and is the lowest-ranked to get that far at Roland-Garros in at least 40 years.
