Open legend gives Bob MacIntyre the ultimate Portrush seal of approval as Scot insists he'll stick to his 'little rules'
Open legend Sir Nick Faldo has given Bob MacIntyre the Portrush seal of approval.
The three-time winner believes the Scottish star is amongst the genuine contenders to win The 153rd Championship after his brilliant Oakmont showing.
MacIntyre's runner-up finish to JJ Spaun at the US Open last month caught the eye of Faldo who believes it will have acted as a key stepping stone for the Oban hero.
The English legend said: 'I think what happened in the US Open was big for him. Suddenly he had a chance where he thought: Oh, I could win this. I was watching from afar and, after day two, I thought: Two over could win this. You've got guys at five-under, but we all know the US Open, everybody comes back in the weekend.
'I bet he thought that for a moment, so that probably was good for him. I bet he had a good couple of hours when he thought, I could do this. So that's a different feeling in your body and your mind, isn't it? And how you're playing. So I bet he's looking forward to this week. It seems that it's going to be nice temperature, but we're going to get plenty of good weather, aren't we? We're going to get wind and rain and all sorts of things.
'So it's got to suit the Scottish and Irish boys this week. We're used to playing in that. It's a different wind, such a heavy wind here being on the coast. You've got to know what you're doing and how to do it.'
MacIntyre says he'll relish the conditions and stated: 'For me, it's the purest method of the game that we've got, links golf. So many different ways to play it. It's not just 155 yards, pitch it 155 yards, keep it two yards right of the pin. It's not that. It's the unpredictability of what that's going to give us.
'You could tee off at 8am, beautiful sunshine and then at 8.15am there's a storm coming in, you're playing and the wind switched. It's just unpredictable with the weather, unpredictable with the bounces. I think that's what I love about it, that if you're out of position, I've got little rules that I keep.
'In links golf it gets pretty easy with there's certain things you cannot do and there's certain things you have to do. I think it's the best way to play golf is links golf. A lot of guys that I watch that haven't played it as much as I have make the mistakes, and then I'm looking at it going, you cannot do that.
'But, as for me, sometimes you can hit certain shots, but you're actually walking up there going, that's all right, that's all right, we've got a chance from there. I just love it and I think that's why I've been brought up in it. I play it less now, and I think I enjoy it more now than I've ever done it.'

Girlfriend's tribute to 'inspirational' ice hockey star killed in horror Ibiza fall
Gary Kelly, from Dundee, died instantly in the fall at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel during the early hours of Monday morning, July 21, with his devastated girlfriend leading tributes The heartbroken girlfriend of a Scottish ice hockey star who tragically died after falling from an Ibiza hotel has paid tribute to her "inspiring" late boyfriend. Gary Kelly, a talented sportsman from Dundee, tragically lost his life in a fall at Ibiza Rocks during the early hours of Monday morning, July 21. Despite two ambulances rushing to the scene, paramedics sadly confirmed there was nothing they could do to save him. This same hotel has now seen four tourists fall to their deaths while staying at the establishment in recent months. Louise Essery, the 19-year-old's girlfriend, shared a touching tribute to Gary, whom she described as inspirational in every aspect of his life. Taking to Facebook with a poignant statement, Louise told loved ones that she would "remember the good times" and "celebrate the love he brought into their lives." She penned: "I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye. For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me. "It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives." She went on: "Everything feels heavy, and words can't express the love I have for Gary. I wish you could see how much you are loved. Even though our experiences together have paused, the memories we made will stay with me forever. I miss you so much already. "Thank you for the kind messages about Gary; they mean a lot. I love you forever and always, Gary Kelly." Spanish authorities confirmed in a statement that they were alerted to the incident at around 12.40am, reports the Daily Record. An investigation has been initiated following the most recent fatality at the hotel. Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, tragically lost his life just two weeks ago at the same four-star hotel. The 26-year-old, who was on holiday with a mate celebrating his birthday, fell to his death on July 7. Gary, who played ice hockey for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season, was remembered as a "hugely talented and charismatic individual". His sister, Kharis Kelly, also left a heartfelt tribute saying: "Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Our handsome boy has gone to the other side, Absolutely no words. We are asking everyone to respect our privacy as a family while we try to navigate through this tragic news. You'll forever be our boy Gary, Sleep tight." A spokesman for the Spanish Civil Guard added: "The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed. The results of the post-mortem will also be important to the investigation." On Monday, bosses at Ibiza Rocks said they were "deeply shocked and devastated" following the latest tragedy as they suspended all events at the hotel. A spokesperson stated: "Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. "The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time."

Major Ryder Cup rule change as Team Europe captain Luke Donald gives approval to USA request to avoid ‘bad blood'
Donald has also given an update on Bryson DeChambeau LUKE AT THAT Major Ryder Cup rule change as Team Europe captain Luke Donald gives approval to USA request to avoid 'bad blood' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LUKE DONALD has agreed to lift the gagging order on Ryder Cup vice-captains - easing the way for opposite number Keegan Bradley to become a player captain. That is another sign that Europe fancy their chances of becoming the first team to win away from home since they pulled off the Miracle at Medinah 13 years ago if Bradley takes on a dual role. 3 Luke Donald has approved a Ryder Cup rule change Credit: Getty 3 Keegan Bradley could become a player captain Credit: AP Vice captains are banned from handing out advice or making contact with players during matches under the existing rules. But European captain Donald is prepared to change that, so one of Bradley's five deputies - Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kisner, Gary Woodland and Jim Furyk - could stand in for him if he is on the course. European insiders have said Donald gave his approval to the American request because he did not want any 'bad blood' between the teams, before they clash at New York's Bethpage Black cauldron in September. But privately Donald and his team hope Bradley might take his eye off the ball, while juggling his duties as the Ryder Cup's first player-captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. READ MORE IN GOLF SCOTT IT ALL Scottie Scheffler resembles peak Tiger Woods as eerie stat ominous for rivals Bradley had originally said he would only play if he was one of the six USA players to qualify automatically. He insisted he would not be one of his six captain's picks. But his stellar form over the last couple of years has seen him climb to seventh in the world rankings. And even though he slipped from ninth to tenth on the American Ryder Cup list after finishing in a tie for 30th place at the Open, he clearly feels he is playing too well to simply stand aside. Bradley has also confirmed LIV star Bryson DeChambeau - who won his second US Open title last year - will definitely be on his team at Bethpage, even though he could fail to hold onto an automatic qualifying spot. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK DeChambeau is currently fifth on the points list despite playing a limited schedule. But he will not feature in any more qualifying events because of his LIV duties, and some of his rivals could leapfrog him during the FedEx Cup play-offs. Bryson DeChambeau reveals he used to beat Scottie Scheffler for fun as world No1 chases Open glory Bradley told Sports Illustrated: "Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder Cup. He brings so much. 'He brings energy, passion but most importantly, he's one of the best players on the planet."

Olympic champion Zheng withdraws from U.S. Open after elbow surgery
July 21 (Reuters) - Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen has withdrawn from the U.S. Open as she recovers from right elbow surgery, tournament organisers announced Monday. The world number six revealed last week on Instagram that she has been struggling with "persistent pain" in her right elbow, which affected her performance during both training and matches. After exploring various treatments with little success, Zheng decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery following consultations with elbow specialists and her support team. She has since announced she will be taking a short break from competition to focus on her recovery. The 22-year-old Chinese star enjoyed a remarkable run last year, capturing gold at the Paris Olympics and reaching the final of the 2024 Australian Open. However, her momentum was halted at Wimbledon this year, where she was eliminated in the first round by Czech player Katerina Siniakova earlier in July. With Zheng's withdrawal, France's Leolia Jeanjean will move into the main draw of the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, which begins with main draw action on August 24 in New York.
