Disturbing details emerged from the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court in Cape Town regarding the rape and murder of seven-year-old Lolitha Kowa on Friday.
The Khayelitsha girl was reported missing on Tuesday evening after she failed to return home. She was last seen at a family friend's place.
Tragically, the next morning, a South African Police Service (Saps) sniffer dog led investigators to a nearby residence on Sindwadwa Street, Kuyasa, Khayelitsha, just six houses away from Lolitha's home.

The girl was found with visible head injuries, and she was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.
Investigators also discovered blood on a mop and the floor at the scene.
Further investigation led to the arrest of two suspects: Odwa Jack (33) and Nokuthula Matyenisi (33).

On Friday morning, a large group of community members, leaders, and activists gathered in protest of gender-based violence in front of the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court, where the suspects appeared.
The state presented disturbing preliminary results to a courtroom packed with law enforcement officers, community members, and media representatives.
'According to the prosecution, the child was found with a screwdriver lodged in her head and a sock in her mouth,' said Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Piet Smit.
Postmortem results prompt rape charge
Blood was discovered not only in the accused's home but also in Accused 1 Odwa Jack's car.
'Postmortem results also revealed the presence of semen, prompting the addition of a rape charge,' Smit added.
The accused appeared in court briefly before the matter was remanded to 1 August for further investigation.

The state has requested a full criminal profile review for both individuals. Jack and Matyenisi will remain in custody.
Investigating Officer Warrant Officer Msolo arrested both suspects on the same day at the scene of the crime.
'It's become a high-profile case, but my focus is on investing and bringing justice for the child,' he said.
Bringing justice for Lolitha
While the community was protesting outside, Ward 99 councillor Lonwabo Mqina told broadcasters there is no space for crime in the Khayelitsha community.
'We will unite as the community of Ward 99 and Khayelitsha broadly to fight against crime,' Mqina said.
He added that discovering the child had also been raped during the brutal attack was both shocking and deeply upsetting.

'When we were there yesterday, we were just shattered. We couldn't even say anything because it hurt us so much to hear that she was also raped,' the community leader said.
Meanwhile, anti-GBV group Ilitha Labantu called for swift justice following Jack and Matyenisi's arrest.
'The murder of a child is a heartbreaking tragedy and a painful reflection of a society lacking effective protective systems for its most vulnerable. It exposes the gaps in community safety and the absence of coordinated responses needed to prevent violence against children,' the organisation said.
'The circumstances surrounding Lolitha's death are not isolated; they are part of a pattern of escalating brutality that must be met with coordinated action and urgency.'
Anti-GBV, womens' rights groups call for justice
Lady Liberty SA called on South Africans to join them in seeking justice for Lolitha.
'We stand with her family, the community, and every child who deserves safety and protection. Let's raise our voices for change,' stated the NPO that extends access to justice to all women.

Police dismiss social media reports claiming kidnapped Pretoria farmer found dead
The SAPS has dismissed social media rumours claiming that prominent farmer and businessman Jerry Boshoga has been found dead. The Witness reports that Boshoga (46), from Silver Lakes in Pretoria, was kidnapped in Centurion in November last year. His abductors initially demanded R25m in ransom, later lowering the demand to R10m. Since his disappearance, the family has received disturbing videos allegedly showing Boshoga being assaulted and pleading for his life. In one of the videos, Boshoga, clearly injured and with a cloth stuffed in his mouth, is heard appealing to his mother: 'Please pay, pay now so they can release me. It is too bad. I really need you. Please pay everything they want, I am begging you…' In another recording, he begs his wife to ask his father to raise the money. The footage sparked widespread concern and led to a national outcry for his safe return. Yesterday, posts began circulating on social media claiming that Boshoga had been found dead. SAPS has labelled these reports as false and irresponsible. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, saying the investigation is ongoing and at a 'very sensitive stage'. 'The SAPS can confirm that the businessman has not been found alive or deceased. These unverified social media claims are misleading and have caused unnecessary trauma, panic and anxiety to his mother, wife and children.' She confirmed that police remain in close contact with the Boshoga family, who will be informed of any developments first by the investigating team. Boshoga was last seen in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion, after telling family he was meeting someone. When his brother could not reach him later that day, a WhatsApp message from an unknown number was sent to Boshoga's wife, along with a voice note in which he said: 'I've been kidnapped.' Mathe has called for responsible social media engagement, particularly in sensitive cases such as kidnappings, where misinformation can worsen the suffering of families involved. City's service delivery operation slammed by residents
The Strydom Park Ratepayers Association (SPRA) is not pleased with the city's High Impact Service Delivery (HISD) Operation that took place on July 30 on the corner of CR Swart Dr and Fabriek Street. Led by the Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) region B and other stakeholders, including SAPS, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), City Parks, and PikitUp, it aimed to clear illegal dumping and remove homeless and waste pickers from around the spruit. Karolynn van Vuuren, chairperson of the association, said that while they appreciate the effort and the presence of multiple stakeholders during yesterday's clean-up, it lacked leadership and coordination. Nearly an hour was lost to inefficiency, and the initiative's momentum suffered as a result. 'If we are to take these operations seriously, JMPD needs to step up, either by being better resourced or rethinking its deployment priorities.' She further stated that the operation, unfortunately, made very little visible difference in the area. Also read: Randburg Customer Service Centre returns after two-year closure 'While we saw brief activity, much remains untouched and unresolved. It's disheartening, and it underscores a painful reality: the city's service efforts are not just lacking, they are insufficient. We're being offered crumbs to placate taxpayers, while fundamental issues persist and deepen.' She added that these blitz-style clean-ups, held once or twice a year, do little to maintain safety or sustainability. Illegal activities resumed almost immediately after the operation. 'Without consistent and strategic follow-through, these events become token gestures rather than genuine solutions. What we need is ongoing monitoring and dedicated enforcement, not these sporadic interventions that give infringers a six-month holiday from scrutiny.' The SPRA is calling on residents and property owners to go beyond simply supplementing city services. Also read: Region B CRUM continues with service delivery campaign around Randburg 'It's time we take full ownership of what the city fails to do. Whether through financial contribution or time investment, community-driven action is no longer a nice-to-have; it's an urgent necessity. The state of our greenbelts, roads, and drains demands more than photo opportunities and fleeting initiatives. We need persistent care, proactive enforcement, and unified local involvement.'
