Malaysia leads Asean cybersecurity charge
As chair of Asean this year, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia has put cybersecurity at the heart of the regional agenda.
As such, Ahmad Zahid called for the upcoming Asean Cybersecurity Cooperation Strategy to prioritise real-time collaboration among member states in areas such as incident response, digital forensics, secure data sharing and policy harmonisation.
'These mechanisms must uphold the principles of confidentiality, sovereignty and mutual trust, which are essential in managing sensitive and transboundary cybersecurity threats,' he said in his speech at the Cyber Defence and Security Exhibition and Conference (Cydes) 2025 here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Themed 'Advancing Cyber Resilience', Cydes 2025 is organised by the National Security Council (Prime Minister's Department) and National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa), in collaboration with Alpine Integrated Solution Sdn Bhd.
Cydes 2025 gathers 70 international delegations from 20 nations alongside five global organisations, underscoring confidence in Malaysia's efforts to foster a more secure, cooperative and responsive cybersecurity environment.
Referencing the Cisco 2025 Cybersecurity Readiness Index, he noted that 93% of organisations experienced AI-driven cyberattacks over the past year, yet only 51% of employees have a clear understanding of such threats.
Building on this, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) continues to play a vital role in producing industry-ready talent and promoting social mobility within the cybersecurity sector.

Italy seeks economic and trade partnership with Malaysia

Anwar expressed gratitude for Tajani's visit, reflecting both nations' commitment to strengthening bilateral relations based on mutual respect and understanding. "We have been talking about expanding our cooperation in various fields, including relations between Asean and the European Union,' he added. Anwar mentioned discussions on regional and global conflicts, including those in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, and Israel. He also expressed his admiration for Italy's rich history, literature, and art, sharing how Dante's Inferno, the song Caruso, and Leonardo Da Vinci's works have impacted the world, drawing applause from the Italians present. Asean on track to meet clean energy goals, says Petra deputy sec-gen
Energy transition and water transformation ministry deputy secretary-general Mareena Mahpudz says several Asean countries aim to achieve net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2065. KUCHING : Asean is on track to achieving its clean energy and climate goals, the energy transition and water transformation ministry said. The ministry's deputy secretary-general (energy) Mareena Mahpudz said the region had already made notable progress, particularly in the power sector where countries were working towards their net-zero targets. She said several Asean countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, aimed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, while others such as Indonesia and Thailand had set targets for 2060 and 2065, respectively. 'Even now, Malaysia has already achieved its target for this year. We were supposed to reach 31% by the end of the year, but it's already close to 32%,' Mareena told FMT, referring to the share of renewable energy in Malaysia's installed power capacity. At the regional level, the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) sets out a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with a strong focus on expanding renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Asean has committed to achieving a 23% share of renewables in its total primary energy mix by this year. While current figures sit at around 14.4%, Mareena said efforts were being scaled up across the region to close the gap — through greater investment in renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and the adoption of clean technologies. This regional push was reinforced during the 43rd Asean Senior Officials' Meeting on Energy, held from June 16-18, which laid the groundwork for the second phase of the APAEC roadmap. Mareena also highlighted the launch of the Asean Power Grid (APG) Financing Facility under Malaysia's chairmanship, a platform aimed at mobilising funding for cross-border energy projects and accelerating the region's clean energy transition. 'It's a collaboration between financial institutions, the economic sector, and the energy sector. It can help attract more investors to the region and support local industries.' She added that the facility had already attracted support from Bank Negara Malaysia, the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank. 'We have also received interest from the European Commission, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Islamic Development Bank and several Chinese banks too.' Mareena said Asean was also working to strengthen the region's clean energy infrastructure — including solar panel manufacturing and battery storage — to meet rising demand and build a more self-sustaining green economy. 'It's challenging, but I believe moving forward it will be very successful, and we can achieve the targets we've set for the region,' she said.

Singapore and Cambodia to expand collaboration in renewable energy, carbon markets and agri-trade
SINGAPORE: Singapore and Cambodia will deepen their collaboration in several areas, including renewable energy, high-quality carbon credits and trade in food products, as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said this on Wednesday (July 2) in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, the latest in his series of introductory visits to Asean capitals. At a luncheon hosted by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace, PM Wong thanked Manet for his invitation to visit and said the two countries' relationship had continued to grow from strength to strength over the last 60 years. 'Our ties... were built on the strong foundation laid by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and His Majesty King-Father Norodom Sihanouk,' PM Wong said in a toast speech. 'It is a foundation of mutual respect, trust and friendship that continues to guide our relationship today.' He noted that Singapore is one of Cambodia's largest investors and trading partners. In 2024, the Republic was Cambodia's third-largest foreign investor, with bilateral trade between the countries increasing 7.1 per cent year on year to S$4.83 billion. During his visit, PM Wong called on Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace. He also called on Senate President Hun Sen. At his meeting with Manet, the two leaders discussed several priority areas of cooperation. The first such area is renewable energy, in which the two countries' cooperation will help build a greener and more interconnected Asean, said PM Wong. He cited a project for Singapore to, which will be a key building block towards an Asean Power Grid. The plan is for the grid to link up the electricity networks of the group's member countries and enable cross-border power trading by 2045. Some progress has already been made on this front, with Singapore's Keppel having inked a pact in 2023 with Cambodia's Royal Group Power for the long-term import and sale of 1 GW of low-carbon electricity. In the area of high-quality carbon credits, the countries are working together on an implementation agreement for an earlier memorandum of understanding. 'This will mobilise financing for clean-energy projects, uplift rural communities and improve livelihoods, while enabling both our countries to hit our net-zero goals,' said PM Wong. 'We are also keen to diversify our sources of food imports, so closer collaboration in this area will be mutually beneficial for both our countries,' said PM Wong. Both countries also agreed to continue working to strengthen Asean centrality and unity, to keep the grouping relevant and advance the region's collective interests. 'In this uncertain global environment, it is more important than ever for Asean to stay cohesive, uphold open channels of dialogue, and work together to resolve our differences peacefully,' said PM Wong. He added that Singapore and Cambodia continue to be steadfast partners in human development, with nearly 19,000 Cambodian officials having received training in areas like public health, digital governance and public administration under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP). Much of this training is conducted right in Phnom-Penh at the Cambodia-Singapore Cooperation Centre, noted PM Wong. The centre is one of three Singapore Cooperation Centres that the SCP has been operating since the Initiative for Asean Integration was launched under Singapore's chairmanship of Asean in 2000. The other centres are in Laos and Vietnam. PM Wong said Cambodia has made remarkable strides over the past six decades to transform from a post-conflict society to a rapidly developing nation, and that under Manet's leadership it has charted an ambitious strategy to become a high-income nation by 2050. 'Singapore will continue to walk alongside Cambodia in this development journey,' he said.
