Ottawa Rose opens up about tragic loss of father and last phone call they shared

Irish Daily Mirror14 hours ago
Rose of Tralee contestant Aidan Russel has opened up about the death of her father, bravely telling of the last phone call she had with her beloved dad.
Ottawa Rose Aidan said she entered the Rose of Tralee to honour her late beloved father from Northern Ireland. The 27-year-old was working in Dublin at the Embassy of Canada to Ireland last year when she received the devastating news that her father was going to die.
He had been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune and neurological condition, and the family lost him just before Christmas.
She didn't make it home to Canada on time to say goodbye, but fondly remembers their last phone call, saying: 'We had a really quick chat, he said he was in pain, he said 'I love you, I'll call you later,' that was our last phone call."
Sadly, while in Ireland this week for the Rose of Tralee, Aidan became overwhelmed with grief, prompting her to take a step back. But her fellow Roses were there to support her.
"We had a really tough night on Wednesday, we were dealing with some of the legal stuff. The outpouring of love and support I got from 31 girls who I'd known for four days... I can't begin to describe how much love, support and kindness I felt that night."
The Ottawa Rose then stunned the crowd with a rendition of Someone's Watching Over Me, which was a tribute to her late dad.

This year's competition was jam-packed with highs and lows, funny moments and even a performance from Daniel O'Donnell as viewers got to know all of the Roses that took part in the competition. However, it was South Australia Rose, Beth Mooney, who won the hearts of viewers when it was revealed she had suffered a huge family loss just days before the event. Beth, who grew up in Co Wexford, lost her beloved grandmother Lucy Lane on Friday, August, 15 - just one day before the live show began. Speaking to Beth live on air, Kathryn remarked: "See, we are all in awe of you. We really are, because you have had an incredibly difficult few days. Very unexpectedly, you buried your grandmother yesterday. And it's just, it was a shock for everybody. "And the fact that you were standing up here is incredible. And the fact that you have come and turned up with a smile on your face, you're amazing." An emotional Beth responded: "I'm doing well. I think it's a testimony to my family and to my grandma. She would never want me to miss out on the Rose of Tralee. "She was a very dramatic person, she was. So, to be up here is really representing her." Kathryn told the audience that Beth got to visit her grandmother one last time to show off her glamorous Rose of Tralee look. Beth said: "She was overwhelmed. Beth also opened up about being diagnosed with scoliosis at the young age of eleven. The Wexford native revealed: "I had surgery at 14, spinal fusion. Which is very late. I had to wait a certain amount of time because of the way scoliosis works, particularly as an adolescent, since you have to go through a lot before you can do it. 'SO PROUD' "You have to hit puberty before you go through it. So it's really important that they hit it at the right time." Kathryn added: "And you are living proof that with the correct surgery and early intervention, a life can be very different. Because dance is your life." And RTE viewers all flooded social media with love for the South Australia Rose. Gemma wrote on X: "What an inspiration Beth go girl." Lauren said: "That must have been so tough for Beth. Such a lovely young lady." Andrea remarked: "Beth is such an inspiration; her nan would be so proud." And Pamela added: "Beth's gran will be so proud looking down on her."

'I'm raring to go' - New Rose of Tralee just wants to get back to work

The new Rose of Tralee has said that she won't be letting the crown get in the way of her completing her apprenticeship. Katelyn, the Laois Rose, won the Rose of Tralee on Tuesday night after impressing judges with her jive alongside her escort, her rose tattoo on her spine, and her talking about her apprenticeship as an electrician. Despite the huge win and the fact that she'll be booked and busy for the next year, Katelyn said that she plans on completing her apprenticeship and engineering degree — saying that she won't let anything get in the way of it. The new Rose of Tralee has said that she won't be letting the crown get in the way of her completing her apprenticeship. 'I think I'll go back to work,' Katelyn told Morning Ireland on Wednesday. 'I'm raring to go back, to be honest, I'm really excited to get back.' When asked about juggling her newfound responsibilities as Rose of Tralee and doing her apprenticeship and degree, nothing seemed impossible in her eyes — but she knows where her priorities lie. 'I suppose I'll be going with my apprenticeship the way I've been going for the past two years, and just kind of continue my duties as the Rose of Tralee on the side as well, but definitely my career will be a priority for me.' Katelyn won the Rose of Tralee on Tuesday night, bu tPic: RTÉ As for how she felt winning the whole shebang, she said that this was a dream she's had since she was six years old, so to win was 'most definitely' a dream come true — and thankfully, she was able to keep herself standing, despite a near miss when her name was called. 'My legs were crossed,' she joked. 'I thought I was going to fall over onto the Arizona rose, that's what was going through my mind. And then all I wanted to do was hug my mum and my dad and my granny — that was mainly it to be honest.' Another unique part of Katelyn was a tattoo — aptly of a rose — on her spine, and while some (more cynical) people would believe that such a tattoo would be her tempting fate, Katelyn explained that it was actually a beautiful tribute to her late granny. Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas. Pic: Domnick Walsh 'My granny Kathleen passed away in June 2023 of gastric cancer,' Katelyn said. 'She was a very avid gardener when she was living at home, and she had beautiful roses in her garden. She had red, pink, orange, yellow, every colour under the sun in our garden. 'I absolutely loved them, and it smelled absolutely fantastic. I suppose when she passed away, I wanted to get a tribute to her and thought the rose would be a lovely touch.' Following her win, social media was alight with reactions as Katelyn received 'the shock of her life' following the huge win.
