‘Naxalism confined to just five, six districts', says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

The Hindu9 hours ago
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday (July 4, 2025) declared that Maoism is now confined to just five to six districts in the country and even in such places, it will not continue for a long time.
The Maoist hubs have been transformed into educational hubs. The area known as Red Corridor is now rapidly changing into a growth corridor, he said, speaking at the 128th birth anniversary celebrations of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju organised by Kshatriya Seva Samiti (TG & AP) and Union Ministry of Culture.
Mr. Singh said the government has taken a decision that by March 31 next year, the entire country would be maoist-free.
Referring to Operation Sindoor, he emphasised that only terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan was targeted, avoiding civil or military establishments, and adhering to ethical principles.
He lauded Sitarama Raju, the legendary freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, as an embodiment of courage, duty and 'karma'.
Similarily, the country's brave soldiers demonstrated courage, duty and 'karma' in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, he said.
Quoting from Ramayan, he said, during 'Lanka Dahan', Lord Hanuman hit only those who hit him.
Similarly, the country demonstrated courage during Operation Sindoor and targeted only terror structures in Pakistan and not civilian or military establishments, he said.
"I would also like to say, if any such mischief (Pahalgam terror attack) takes place in future, we will give befitting to reply to terrorism with the same strength," he said.
The life of Sitarama Raju, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, is also an example of social unity, he said.
Mr. Singh said new technology, infrastructure development and digital revolution are very much needed for development in the context of a 'New India', but it is the "cultural soul" which can keep the country united.
He affirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is working to realise the vision of Sitarama Raju on tribal development through various central initiatives.
The tenet of 'Viksit Bharat', he explained, involves taking pride in its cultural heritage, while upholding constitutional values and being inspired by the dreams of the youth.
Mr. Singh also urged everyone to take the life of Sitarama Raju to every school and home.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said Sitarama Raju, in the short span of his life (less than 30 years), stood as an inspiration and his memory makes the countrymen feel proud.
Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy, Karnataka Minister Bose Raju, former Union Minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju and other leaders were present on the occasion.

Dalai Lama turns 90 tomorrow, says he hopes to ‘live for 30–40 more years' amid succession talks

The elderly Dalai Lama on Saturday expressed his hope to live for another 40 years until around the age of 130, just days after addressing speculation about his succession by reaffirming that he would reincarnate after his death, according to a Reuters report. The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader made the remarks during a long-life prayer ceremony organised by his followers, ahead of his upcoming 90th birthday on Sunday. In a previous interview with Reuters in December, the Dalai Lama had suggested he might live to 110. The Dalai Lama is revered by millions of Tibetan Buddhists as a living deity and is globally recognised as a steadfast advocate for peace, spiritual values, and Tibet's autonomy, as reported by AP. However, China views him as a political threat, accusing him of seeking to separate Tibet from Chinese rule. As the spiritual and political leader of Tibetan Buddhists, he established a government-in-exile in the Indian town of Dharamshala after fleeing Tibet in 1959. Since then, he has travelled the world to raise the issue of Tibet and Tibetans, while spreading a message of nonviolence. He has met world leaders and celebrities, from the likes of fellow Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu to multiple U.S. presidents, popes and Hollywood stars. Earlier on On July 2, the Dalai Lama stated that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, a foundation established by him, can only recognise future reincarnations, and no one else has the authority to decide on the matter. This statement rules out any say for China in the process of naming the next Dalai Lama. In a statement on Wednesday, Dalai Lama stated, 'The process by which a future Dalai Lama is to be recognized has been clearly established in the 24 September 2011 statement which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They should consult the various heads of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the reliable oath-bound Dharma Protectors who are linked inseparably to the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition.' (With inputs from agencies)

BJP leader accuses CM of spreading fake news on Covid-19 vaccines

Bengaluru: BJP MP Lahar Singh Siroya on Friday accused Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of spreading fake news with his recent remarks linking Covid-19 vaccines with a spate of heart attack deaths in the state's Hassan district, saying there is no vaccine against 'dissident' activities. The CM has suggested that the recent heart attack deaths in Hassan district may be linked to the vaccination drive. He also claimed the vaccines were 'hastily' approved. Taking a dig at Siddaramaiah, the BJP MP said that the Karnataka government has been speaking about tough legislation, including a seven-year jail term and fine, against the promotion and spread of fake news. 'At the rate at which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been speaking, I think someone will register the first complaint against him for spreading #fakenews on #Covid vaccines. The Union government has already clarified on this issue,' he said in a post on 'X'. According to him, the Congress' effort is to demoralise the scientific community, which saved millions of lives during the pandemic. 'I hope someone in the Congress cautions him (Siddaramaiah). Perhaps there is nobody left to caution him because nobody in his own High Command or locally think his government will survive for long. There is no vaccine against dissident activities,' Siroya said in the post.

Kiren Rijiju, Pema Khandu attend Dalai Lama birthday celebrations; visit amid India-China war of words over spiritual leader's 'successor'

NEW DELHI: Union minister and Arunachal Pradesh chief minister attended the birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala on Saturday, days after the Tibetan spiritual leader's about a succession plan prompted a war of words between China and India. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Dalai Lama will turn 90 on Sunday. He resides at the Tsuglagkhang, the main Tibetan temple in Dharamshala. Rijiju's visit to greet the spiritual leader comes a day after China asked India to handle Tibet-related issues with "caution," saying this could affect efforts to improve bilateral relations. These remarks by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson followed Rijiju's statement that the Dalai Lama's "reincarnation" should be decided "according to his own wishes." The Union minister's statement was in response to the Chinese asserting earlier this week that the selection process for the spiritual leader's successor should be through a process "approved" by Beijing. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday that India did not have "any position" on the process of selecting the next Dalai Lama. "We have seen reports about His Holiness the Dalai Lama's statement on the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution. The Government of India does not take any position or speak on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion. The government has always upheld freedom of religion for all in India and will continue to do so," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a media briefing in New Delhi. The current Dalai Lama recently said that his successor would be chosen by the India-based Gaden Phodrang Trust — a non-profit organisation he set up — and not by any other authority. This statement was seen as a message to China.
