Controversial businessman Stephen Vaughan dies as son hails 'best man I've ever known'

Yahoo12 hours ago
Controversial Liverpool businessman Stephen Vaughan has died, his son has announced. The former football club owner's death was announced by his son, of the same name, in a Facebook post.
Stephen Vaughan Jr, a former Liverpool reserves player, posted on social media: "Absolutely devastated the best man I've ever known RIP Dad our hero." Vaughan's football legacy is controversial after her bought Chester in 2001 from American Terry Smith and oversaw the club's promotion back to the Football League in 2004.
The club ran into financial difficulty and collapsed into administration with debts of £8 million following relegation in 2009 – the same year Mr Vaughan also became the first owner to fail the Football Association's 'fit and proper person' test.

It came after he had six fraud charges involving deception and obtaining high value cars dropped at Liverpool Crown Court in March 2008 while still serving as Chester City owner. They were alleged to have occurred between March, 2005, and March, 2006.
The Liverpool-born businessman was also over the years a boxing promoter, a director of rugby league club Widnes Vikings and owner and chairman of Barrow.
In late 2009 Mr Vaughan was disqualified from acting as the director of any company for 11 years following his involvement in an alleged £500,000 VAT fraud while he was owner of Widnes Vikings.
Posting on Facebook, Liverpool-born former boxer Derry Mathews wrote: "They say he only takes the best and he's taking one of the greatest men ever, my first ever manager who got George out of retirement to train me, thank you for everything Ste people in the boxing world are going miss you.
"No one could do a prep talk before a fight like you, you would have me wanting to walk through walls and with you by my side in changing rooms we could beat anyone. Gutted for my mate @stephen_vaughan_85, Pat and all the family on the loss. Goodnight God bless Ste."
Mr Vaughan also bought Maltese club Floriana in April 2012 with his son, who captained Chester during his father's ownership and was appointed president soon after.
The Vaughan family ended its association with Floriana in February 2014 but continued to have an involvement in Maltese football as sponsors of Mosta and Hibernians.
The off-duty policeman died after he was struck in Colquitt Street in the early hours of Friday, December 19.
His son's Facebook post was filled with tributes from friends and family, with many simply posting 'RIP' and broken heart emojis, while another said: 'So sorry to hear this sad news Ste, condolences to you and the family'.
A second added: 'Condolences to the family Ste! What a gent your dad was!' And a third said: 'So sorry to hear this awful news about your Dad RIP. Sending my deepest sympathy and condolences and prayers to you and all your beautiful family.'

Chelsea advances to Club World Cup semifinals with 2-1 win over Palmeiras

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Chelsea scored the go-ahead goal on Malo Gusto's 83rd-minute shot that went in after a pair of deflections, beating Palmeiras 2-1 on Friday night for a spot in the Club World Cup semifinals. Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead in the 16th minute but Estêvão, an 18-year-old who will transfer to Chelsea this summer, tied the score against his future club with an angled shot in the 53rd. Gusto's shot following a short corner kick appeared to deflect off defender Agustin Giay and goalkeeper Weverton and sent the Chelsea portion of 65,782 fans into a frenzy. FIFA credited Weverton with an own goal. Chelsea won't travel far for its next match, facing Fluminense on Tuesday at East Rutherford, New Jersey. Hércules came off the bench and scored in the 70th minute to lift Fluminense past Al Hilal 2-1 in Friday's earlier quarterfinal. With Chelsea's win, three of the four semifinal teams will be from Europe, with one from Brazil. The 23-year-old Palmer scored his first goal in the Club World Cup, and showed why he's widely considered one of the top attacking midfielders. He took a pass from Trevoh Chalobah and slipped the ball inside the far post. Fans made it to Lincoln Financial Field on a holiday weekend that included a strike by nearly 10,000 city workers in Philadelphia, competition from an earlier Phillies game, and a concert and fireworks show near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. FIFA had slashed tickets to as low as $11.15. FIFA president Gianni Infantino attended the game, the eighth of the tournament at the home of NFL Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. There was a pregame pregame tribute for Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed and burst into flames on an isolated stretch of highway. Key moments Forward Liam Delap and defender Levi Colwill each got their second yellow cards of the tournament and will be suspended for the semifinal. Takeaways Estêvão agreed to a deal with Chelsea last summer that moved him to Chelsea afterhe turned 18. ___ AP soccer:

Wimbledon 2025: Aryna Sabalenka holds off inspired Emma Raducanu in thriller to reach last-16

Aryna Sabalenka was given a real scare but battled her way past Emma Raducanu in front of a raucous Centre Court crowd. The atmosphere was heightened by the closing of the roof and Raducanu provided those in attendance with plenty to get behind, as she went toe-to-toe with the world number one over two hours. Advertisement Raducanu led 4-2 in the first set and 4-1 in the second but could not get over the line on either occasion, as Sabalenka booked her place in the last-16 with a 7-6 6-4 win. "She played such incredible tennis and she pushed me really hard,' Sabalenka said. 'To get this win, I had to fight for every point like crazy. I'm super happy with the win of course. I'm super happy to see her healthy and back on track. I'm pretty sure that she will be back in the top 10 soon.' Asked about the frenzied atmosphere, she added: "What an atmosphere. My ears are still hurting, honestly. It was super loud! Every time you were cheering her, I was trying to tell myself to just pretend that you were just cheering for me. I had goosebumps honestly, so thank you for the atmosphere." Advertisement Raducanu was hugely impressive in beating 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the second round but this was a significant step up, against the top seed Sabalenka who has reached at least the quarter-finals of every Grand Slam she has played since the French Open three years ago. The Briton, though, was up for the fight. So too were those in the stands, every winner greeted with a huge roar, the noise rivalled only by the increasingly animated shrieks coming from Sabalenka as the tension built. Raducanu landed the first blow, breaking to lead 4-2, but a loose game then allowed Sabalenka to level things up, winning eight points in a row as the Briton struggled to adapt to the new balls and sent a succession of groundstrokes long. Then came a truly remarkable passage of play, a game that lasted 13 minutes and brought seven set points for the world number one. On each occasion Raducanu held firm, her first serve repeatedly getting her out of trouble, as she somehow clawed her way to a hold. Advertisement That appeared even more significant when Raducanu then broke to lead 6-5, but Sabalenka responded immediately to force a tie-break. It ebbed and flowed, Sabalenka incredibly brave in saving set point with a perfect drop shot, and a well-judged volley sealed an epic set after 74 minutes. That could have taken the wind out of Raducanu's sails but she came roaring back to lead 4-1. The crucial game then came as she had a break point to near enough seal the set, but a forehand went long and Sabalenka stayed in touch at 4-2. That was the first of five games in a row that would take her to victory, even if she did threaten further late drama with a double fault on her second match point. The third was converted, though, Raducanu's race finally run after a mammoth effort.

FIFA honors Diogo Jota and his brother before Club World Cup quarterfinal games

Associated Press FIFA paid tribute to Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, before kickoff at the Club World Cup quarterfinal games in Orlando, Florida, and Philadelphia on Friday. The 28-year-old Jota and 25-year-old Silva were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed and burst into flames on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight Thursday. At the match between Al Hilal and Fluminense at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, players formed a circle at midfield as the video board displayed a photo of the Portuguese soccer players. The crowd participated in a moment of silence. At Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia where Brazil's Palmeiras faced Chelsea, a black-and-white photo of the brothers was displayed and a moment of silence was observed as players on both teams wore a black band on their sleeves. Chelsea's Pedro Neto, a friend and Portugal national teammate of Diogo Jota, made the sign of the cross as he entered the pitch with a jersey on his shoulder that had Jota's and Andre Silva's first names. Neto held up the jersey during the moment of silence with the help of Enzo Fernandez. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tire. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married longtime partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation following a long season when he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Silva played for the Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions. ___ AP soccer: recommended in this topic
